BMI is an imperfect measure as it doesn't account for build. However, it is reasonably easy to calculate so the medical profession use it. Life assurance companies also have developed height weight charts that have some compensation factors for frame size.

The biggest problem with tape measure measurements is that unless they are taken in EXACTLY the same place each time they can change (and personally I do not need a series of lines tattooed round me!!) - and those of us who have an excess of fat also can have problems with the softness (squashyness ) of the fat!!

I think taking body measurements with a tape is a far more motivating experience, personally.
But....
BMI on a specially designed scale (providing those things really are accurate),I think would be preferable over the manual mathmatical calculation. Just because your results claim you to be obese, isnt always the case, as it doesnt calculate muscle into the equation.

My dietitian has a digital machine that he uses on me that passes impulses through you but it measures a lot of things and by seeing the changes your whole health/weight loss can be measured - and I can have it done as often as I want, though I don't see the point in having it done too often!!
To give you an idea of what is measured the results last time (beg Jan 10) were :
Height 161 cm
Weight 113kg
Body fat % - 53.7%
Body Fat (kg) 60.7kg
Recommended fat range (%) less than 34%
BMI 43.6
Resistance 0437R
BMR 1310
Target weight less than 79kg
Lean Mass (kg) 52.3kg
Lean mass (%) 46.3%
Total body water (lit) 38.3lit
Total body water (%) 33.9%
Water target (%) 45%

But here's the thing. The scales in chemists and such places where you have to pay 3 dollars to get a report, also have metal handles you hold onto which measure you *% of body fat*. I think they work by shooting electricity through you and calculating the fat. You get a little receipt with Info such as your BMI and % of body fat.

"Oneday in the future they may come up with a great contraption that is easy to use and is in every home to find out exactly what you are until then we can only hope we are going the right way."

There's already one of those. The scales i mentioned that you pay to use in chemists also come in a smaller personal version but are very expensive.

The problem with BMI is that it still does not take into account Muscle as the formula is BMI=kgs/cm2+10000, mine is BMI of 30.5=100/(181*181)+10000 so as you can see it still just goes on weight, that is why instead on focusing on BMI anymore they are running the "How Do You Measure Up?" campaign, women are supposed to be less than 80cm around the waist and 94 for men. Oneday in the future they may come up with a great contraption that is easy to use and is in every home to find out exactly what you are until then we can only hope we are going the right way.

Setting a good example for the most important people in my world by not letting hurdles and regressions take over our lives.

While for landwhales the standard scales can be a good indicator of fitness progress, if you're under 120, it is not that good. Your fat might decrease but you still haven't lost weight? That's because your muscle mass has increased. (I think muscle is heavier than fat) So for around $3 a week, you can go to a pharmacy and get on special scales thet measure your Body Mass Index, which measues the 5 of your body which is fat. It's not free, buit it's a relatively inexpensive investment for weight loss. I'm going to be weighing myself in weekly but also getiing a weekly or fortnightly BMI reading. Anyone else interested?
