At this moment - no - but it could be hard too as there are several time zones in Oz - however I do know that more development is going into the international side of SP generally - more ways to try to make things easier for members from the many countries who use the site!

With the sparkpeople being an American set up, is there a way to have the time/date alignment as a set up when joining? like some sites that ask you your country zone...if we input Australia, could there be an autolink to set the day? Just wondering.

Using Spark Recipes:
Teasp – Aus- 5ml US – 4.93ml
Tablesp – Aus – 20ml US – 15ml
Cup - Aus 250ml US – 239ml

One of the bigger confusions between US and Aus - can stem from the Spark Recipe section
You need top remember that their cups and spoon measures are different and substantially smaller than ours
So the nutrition panel is wrong for us, and in some cases the recipes don’t work with our measurements.
If I want to use a Spark recipe I find I have to re-do the ingredients and nutrition info . using the ingredients that we use, that can be different in any case, and then re-calculate the nutritional content – using the Spark Recipe calculator.

Type the food into the search box- if it comes up make sure its the correct brand and it has an asterisk beside it (the asterisk means its been entered by someone other than Sparkpeople - but because its not been officialy entered remember it may not have any or all of the nutritive value entered)
Anyway if it comes up, highlite it - and you want it in your favourites - there is a box to tick under the meal you want it in and then click enter -it will drop into your menu and be in your favourites list.
Because there can be problems using other people's entries that they have shared- the more reliable way is to enter your own foods!! Its time consuming but once in, provided you tick the Add to favourites box , they are there forever!!

How do I find foods that other people (Australians) have added to their tracker, and then how do I go about importing to my favorites?

This is in answer to the question - How do I enter my own foods in the Nutrition tracker??

Adding Aussie foods to the Nutrition tracker!!

When you use the Nutrition Tracker – which is probably the most important tool to assist you to lose weight – you will find that the foods entered are American!!
In some cases we can use these – eg: beef is beef
But in some things we need to add the things we use as particularly processed foods can be very different. It is a time consuming process, particularly at the start – but is well worth while – and once the food is listed its there in your tracker under – favourites – always!!
To do this – open the Nutrition Tracker
Under the Search button in the green search section (not the old pop up version)
Click on – in very small writing – Enter food not listed –
It opens a full panel – Create a Food not listed
Use the nutrition panel on packaged foods or check in another site like Calorie King - to find the values of the food you are entering
The more you can fill in the better your tracker can calculate your balanced meals – but
N.B. All values under protein – all the vitamins and minerals are in percentage of a 2000cal menu – NOT as we express them!! On some packaged foods the percentage is given but not on all!!

Hi Everyone,

So far I have managed to change my time, though the date format is still wrong so I'll have another look at that and see what I missed. But the main thing is when I tried to search for AUS recipes I only get 4 out of the database, and I know there must be more than that. :( I really want to get started, but with a 6 week old baby and 22mo toddler I don't have time to manually enter label data into my nutrition page... any other clues on search techniques and other quick ways to set up my eating plan. I intend to have a fortnightly menu that cycles over the same meals, which I'll change seasonally.

Thanks

Hi guys,

I am new to Sparkpeople and think it is fabulous. Thanks for the tip on changing to AUS time.

I understand that when I track my food I have to manually import the Australian foods, however, I am wondering if there is a way to set the meal plan to Australian foods? Most of the recommended foods are only found in the US I suspect.

Thanks in advance! emoticon

I have just joined, inputted some foods that I like and then read the advice that us Aussies add AUS in our food description, and thought that that was the best idea yet. I have gone back and edited all of mine (only new so not so many). I hope all other Aussies do this too. Great Idea

Hi, I live in Brisbane and became a member here quite some time ago (2008?) can't remember when. Anyway I started with good intentions, but fell off the wagon. Have just been around Oz in 14 weeks with hubby and enjoyed being more active. Now back at home I am unmotivated to get moving on a regular basis, although I walk with walking buddy, Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Something I guess, better than not at all.
Looks like this team is not all that active, but hope to meet some likeminded friends here soon.

Hi,
I am new to this group..and actually to the country also. Moved here 6 months ago and decided to stay. Trying to find motivation to workout is becoming difficult. I cannot afford a Gym and I don't know anyone in the area. Since I cannot work or go back to school yet I am at a loss. My boyfriend leaves at noon for work and does not get home until 1030-1130 at night. So I find myself watching tv or playing video games (lame I know) I will be meeting his family in 6 weeks and want to lose a lot more weight before i do. 10.7 kg (24 pounds) any ideas on how I can get a good workout without paying gym fees?

yep i dont know how to write lol.

Hi New Members

Below is the information to help you to change to Australia time and date.

Click on my tools then start

To the left is a large start and then your username and underneath that is Account and E mail preferences, click on that.

Scroll down to the bottom and you will see Set local time. Change the date and time to your time zone and then click on Save My Time. This will then change your spark page to the correct time and date automatically. If it does not set do it again, save and then log out and back in to spark and it should set it.

To change to Australian food is a bit time consuming as you have to manually add the nutrition values on the food packaging. You then save it to your favorites. You only need to do this once per item.

You can also import from other members who have added food to their tracker. Once again add this to your favorites especially if you eat the item regularly.

You can also type the item in the search and if some one else has listed the item in your favorites it will come up. Once again save it to your favorites.

Hope you find this helpful

I can't even get back to preferences. I am amazed that this site is difficult to navigate. I use computers a lot! I have neen a member for ages, but the site is just to busy to make it work for me, which really sucks because I need to lose weight and have noone to train with..annoyed!

I joined this site today and am finding it a bit overwhelming. I've changed the time 3 times now and saved it but when it refreshes it just goes back to the american time. Also when putting in my weight and height I chose the kg / metre,cm option but for some reason it read it as pounds and told me i had a bmi of 13 and that i couldnt choose a goal less than 122kg which is 30kg more than i am now..... sorted now, i went back and changed it to the pounds option. I'll see what tomorrow brings...

update, just checked it and found it has saved, i was changing the "new date and time" didn't see it had saved it. its all very confusing lol

Hi Anne,
Thanks for putting up the method for changing time to local and for the advice on entering Aus foods.
I only joined up yesterday, but so far am impressed with the positive messages that come from the SP groups and website.
Looking forward to being a part of it all and getting to my goals!!

Hi everyone - I have been using this site - interesting that you need to think carefully about how to categorise food e.g. Hot Cross Bun came in under Bun, Sweet with Fruit, Uniced etc :) Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find the search field in the Food Calorie Counter box. I have also put in a lot of foods I use from W.A. so will add AUS in the edits ASAP. Hope this is helpful!

Hi All, Introducing myself as an Aussie Kiwi.Been here for years and happy for it. Glad there is an Australian food section and I think I have been able to add some things. My Question can someone tell me how to do that little animation thingo to record my weight progress. P.S. kjs to cals divide by 4.2 doing cals to kjs is multiply by 4.2 ......hope tht is correct.

They are changing Calorie King as well so that now you have to pay to use it :(

There was an Australian site a few years ago that had all the foods in there as well as exercise programs etc called fitsmart.com but they have since disappeared. Would have been great if it was still around as it had all the Australian foods in it :)

4th Jan = 114 kg
9th September = 106 kg

Kept 8 kilos off since January, happy about that now for the rest of them!

I dunno. I think you can only change the names of foods you added yourself by clicking on 'add food', going to 'my favourites' and clicking on 'edited manually entered foods'.

PS

I'm sorry for being so slow, I don't check my email very often!! ^^;

Putting (AUS) somewhere in the name is a great idea. If we all do that as we add food the database will sooon be populated with Austraalian food that we can search for.

i've used calorieking before. its got quite a good database of foods. I tend to look food up on there and add it in manually on this site. Plus i put (AUS) next to the name of any foods i create so others know its an australian food

There is CalorieKing.com.au but I have not used it but I think you still have to enter the info manually so I am afraid there isnt any other way as we dont have an Australian Database. It is a pain but once you enter the food in to your favourites and save it then you only have to do it once.
Some Australian foods have dietary fibre on them. I have a book called Calorie Fat and Carb counter by Allan Borusheks, got it from Angus and Roberts Book Store. It has fibre counter in there.

Anne,

Is there any way of easily limiting the data base search to Australian foods? I've found how to import other people's entries but that seems to get me a lot of shares for the same item.
Also, an important note is that the Australian labels don't include dietary fibre in the total carbs whereas the Sparkpeople database appears to include dietary fibre in the total carbs.

Anne,

Is there any way of sharing the information on Australian food and an easy way to import the data from others?

When you enter your food manually you get this information off the packaging. If using the spark ones they also have cals etc.

Hi Team

I have had several enquires on how to change to Australian date and time, for those that didn't know which included me I am pleased to let you know that I have found out how to change it.

To the new members I hope this has explained things for you. Will also mention that you can add Australian food manually so for information on this check out the instructions on team page forum.

Hope all you going through this heat wave are staying cool and hoping like me for a cool change.

Have a great day

Anne Co Leader
