I put my Body Bugg monitor on this morning for my Wii Zumba Class and in 20 Minutes (easy level), it registered 212 calories burned. But when logging 20 Zumba minutes in spark it only gives me 101 calories, kinda feel cheated. I think i'll do what another team member posted, and create my own category and add the minutes from the bugg. Also I thought i'd add that my HRT monitor (Body Bugg) registers my heart rate as elevated for at least 45 mins after Zumba, which helps burn additional calories.

You're welcome. A gift for your birthday is a great way to get an HRM, because they really are expensive. I was lucky because I had a reward system with my health insurance and I used my reward points to purchase the HRM. Best use of my reward points (followed by my rice cooker :))

Thanks so much BotJeanietle for the info on the HRM - its good to know that I might possibly be burning more calories than what's listed on Sparkpeople. My main worry was that it was over-estimating the calories burned.

I'm thinking a HRM might be something I should ask for, for my birthday! Lol :-)

I always include the cool down in my fitness minutes. When I am doing the cool down, I continuously bounce my feet, which seems to register more of the cool down on the Wii. It also keeps my heart rate up, so I tend to do another cool down after finishing the Zumba work out (for this I turn to the Wii Fit, which generally does not raise my heart rate very much). I also use a heart rate monitor. I love it. I think it measures my calories burned much more accurately than SP because it measures off of my actual heart rate and my weight. I find that my HRM usually calculates a higher burn rate for calories than SP (for most activities). When I record Zumba, I actually create my own "category" and enter the calories burned manually-whatever my HRM says I burned.

LOL! Now that is too funny, but it does work! Lol

@ Codilynn, do you find that your heart rate monitor gives you a caloric number that is close to what SparkPeople has listed?

I don't have a HRM right now, but am interested in buying one...but I notice the nice ones are pretty expensive! I guess its more out of curiosity to see how accurate SP is at estimating how many calories I burned. If I do an hour of Zumba, it says I burned about 654 calories.

Lol, you are funny! I usually just exaggerate my movements a little more, most of the times it works and I don't lose too much of the energy, sometimes it doesn't. I may have it your way.

I just figured out how to get points and earn energy during the cool down
You kind of look a little bit like a stripper, but I just think of it as a merger between zumba and throaty *whisper* flirty girl fitness
You just shake your butt during all the cool down exercises
I think divaprincess did the same thing with just shaking the remote
Its very special feeling when ur doing the squat looking stretch and u have ur booty out to the. Back
Lolol
But a little shake will at least take you into the yellow if not the green

I wear my heartrate monitor to and track my fitness that way. But I definately include the cooldown.. If I do it, its soo boring and I dont get the points for it anyway.. Last week i just shook my remote to get the points ;)

i know the feeling.
i figure i gots the wii, i can let that $400 rest in my pocket
losing out on the cool down won't kill me
only annoying...slightly
and as endorphins start coursing through my body that should matter less and less

Yes I noticed that too, but its because of the controller...the controller only detects when you're doing big movements. It can't pick up smaller movements like when you're stretching.

I think the Kinect for the Xbox might be a little better at picking up actual body movements since it uses the camera to see what you're actually doing. I want to buy the xbox, but I can't justify the $400 price tag!

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse anyone. The cool-down is included with the 20 minutes.

I just wasn't sure if I should include the cool down when I log it into my fitness minutes, since you aren't working as hard as you do during the rest of the workout.

When you get ready to add cardio you will see under *other exercises* they have added Cardio Dancing (including Zumba, aerobic dance etc)

I use that now :)

I do. I include the warmup/down as part of the whole workout... your heartrate should still be pretty high when you're warming down, so you're still burning lots of calories!

I log 20 minutes under Aerobics Low Impact. That's probably conservative.

Keep dancing!!!

Just curious, how do you guys log your minutes into SP? Do you include the cool down song in your total workout time? The cool down period is usually about 4 minutes long...do you include that with the total workout minutes? Thanks!
