This September challenge has been great, and I've established a nice little morning routine that I can do anywhere - which is key.

I started with Tongue scraping and Sun Salutations, and that led to me adding in drinking a glass of room temperature water, and pooping regularly!

As we have been working through Body Thrive's habits, I've now got into the rhythm of having my main meal between 12-2 (sometimes 3pm), and a light supper before 6-7pm.

I've begun turning off my electrical devices about an hour before bed, and massaging my feet with lavender. I'm currently working on getting enough hours of sleep.

Self care Activities:
Tongue scraping
Sun salutations

My intention for September:
Carry out these two self-care activities in a daily basis and see what effect it has.

My progress:
1 - 7: tongue scraping 6/7; Sun salutations 5/7
8 - 14; tongue scraping 7/7; Sun salutations 7/7
15 - 21; tongue scraping 7/7; Sun salutations 7/7
22 - 28; tongue-scraping 7/7; Sun salutations 7/7
29 - 30 2/2! all done!

This early-morning routine has become very necessary - I get up, scrape my tongue, drink a glass of room-temp water, put the coffee on, go and do my Sun Salutations (notice the plural?!), then enjoy my coffee.

I've cracked a system that works for me with the tongue-scraping - I do three quick scrapes right at the back of my tongue - before the gag reflex kicks in. The brush my tongue and scrape the mid-section a few times. I thought I'd never overcome the gag - but I've found a way. My tongue-scraper is only plastic one, but it's a start.

Self care Activities:
meditate, yoga, eat more plants

My intention for September.
I will meditate for 10+ minutes each morning and evening, I will practice yoga each day and continue to eat more plants.

My progress: emoticon
1 - 7 Meditate - 5/7, yoga 5/7, eating more plants 7/7
8 -14 Meditate - 7/7, yoga 6/7, eating more plants 7/7
15 - 21 Meditate - 7/7, yoga 4/7, eating more plants 7/7
22 - 28 Meditate - 5/7, yoga 2/7, eating more plants 7/7
29 - 30 Meditate 2/2, yoga 1/2, eating more plants 7/7

My successes and struggles:
1-7: I had trouble in the beginning of the week. We were camping and I was distracted. Working hard to build this routine this week.

8-14:I did well with meditation and plants, missed one day of yoga. I will keep working on it.

15 - 21:I am doing better with meditation and eating more plants than I am with yoga. I hurt my back a few months ago and it is a slow road to recovery. Maybe I should focus on gentle/restorative yoga .

22 - 30: I have had a rough week and it shows. Why is it that the first thing to go when my life gets complicated is self-care? Hoping I will do better in October.

effect so far is that I've piggy-backed drinking a glass of room-temperature water immediately after the tongue-scraping. I'm also 'pooping' regularly - usually just after my coffee, which is after my sun salutation: so it goes:- tongue scrape, drink water, make coffee, sun salutations, drink coffee and sit quietly for 15 mins, poop! Yay!

I've piggy-backed drinking a glass of water after scraping my tongue. I then make coffee and do my sun salutation.

This morning I messed up by having a drink at 3am because I was woken by my anti-social neighbour. Never mind, I will still scrape my tongue when I start the day properly.

We went camping in the Adirondack Mountains! 4 days of mountains, trees and lakes was so good for me! I feel clear and refreshed. I did manage my meditation and to eat plenty of plants but no yoga. Getting it done today! emoticon

I've managed two days in a row - tongue scraping (after which I piggy-backed a glass of water), then sun salutations.

Day 1

And I failed to do tongue scraping and sun salutations FIRST, and found myself drinking coffee!!

I will start my day again; better late than never?

I have set up a habit tracker in my Bullet Journal so I can monitor my success.

Each journey begins with the first step. My body is ill and needs some attention. Hello. Welcome. emoticon
A challenge sounded like a great idea when I offered it up and then I started thinking about it and got a bit overwhelmed. How do I set up a challenge when I am very much a student of Ayurveda, not an expert? How do I choose one thing to start with, when there are so many things to try? Where to begin?

Then I was reminded that Ayurveda is all about timing and cycles and seasons. Ayurveda begins with self care. So that is where we will begin, with dinacharya . What is dinacharya?

From Wikipedia:
"Dinacharya (Sanskrit:"daily-routine") is a concept in Ayurvedic medicine that looks at the cycles of nature and bases daily activities around these cycles. Ayurveda contends that routines help establish balance and that understanding daily cycles are useful for promoting health."

Daily routine. We are going to build our daily routines. Our dinacharya. Our challenge for the month of September is to choose one or two activities and establish our routine. We will continue to build and add on to our routines, at our own speed. Below you will find articles that describe dinacharya and what is included.

***(Some of the articles below involve sales pitches for classes or products. I am never going to tell you that you should buy this or that. There is good information in these articles but you DO NOT have to buy anything to do this challenge. There is so much information available in books, (that you can borrow from the library) and from reputable online sources, there is no need to purchase anything.)***

emoticon Once the weather cools down, autumn is vata season. emoticon
Routine is vata balancing, which makes this a great time to establish a self care routine!

emoticon emoticon September's Dinacharya Challenge: emoticon emoticon
1. Choose 2 or more activities to include in your daily routine. (See list of ideas below)
2. Set your intention.
3. Share your choices with us, if you wish.
4. Check in once a week and discuss how it is going, ask questions, get ideas. Share successes and struggles.
5. Feel free to set up your tracker as you wish!

Self care Activities to choose from:

Wake early
Meditate/pray
Drink water
Oil pulling
Tongue scraping
Abhyanga
Yoga - Sun salutations
Exercise
Eat more plants
Eat seasonally
Allow your digestion to rest between meals…no snacking
Make your midday meal your largest main meal
Pranayama
Meals at regular times
Earlier, lighter dinner (supper)
Bed by 10pm

Or choose one, from another source, not listed.
