I'm back with the ELD. Today it was an avocado and some rye crispbreads - lovely.

Hello.
I am winning the battle with ELD! So far anyway. LOL The holidays made a mess of my habits but I have been done eating by 6pm for the last week. Still working on the lighter part but that is an ongoing battle for me. Abhyanga, dry brushing and tongue scraping are habits that are firmly in place. Exercise and meditation are an ongoing challenge. I am starting to crave greens, too. Not cold salad, though, more like cooked collard greens and kale. Maybe my digestive system is craving more bitter? I am going to experiment a bit. It is tough to be stick to mostly local, season produce in the Northern US during the winter. But I am trying, going to roast some root vegetables today and hunting for a lentil soup/stew recipe. I am back to growing broccoli sprouts and considering growing microgreens. emoticon Hope this finds you well. emoticon

My earlier, lighter, dinner seems to have drifted a bit - very disordered eating over the past month really - with not wanting to eat breakfast until later, then lunch being almost dinner, and then wanting 'something' later in the evening. I'm aiming to get back on track asap!

Today, un-seasonally, I have been craving leafy green salads!

Sounds good!

I've been pretty disordered food-wise, with more grazing going on during the Xmas days. But some things are stuck firmly now - tongue scraping, drinking water, skin brushing, face massage, mostly pooping first thing too. I have been forgetting to bathe my eyes.

Gill, I understand. We have eaten late and much too heavy a few times this holiday season. your meal sounds delicious. We are on our own today and although the menu is not perfect, there will be more vegetables than is traditional for us. We are also eating before 5! Progress. Getting ready to go hiking this morning. Missing my grown up kids but enjoying a quiet Christmas. Hugs to you. emoticon

I ate my Xmas meal yesterday - because I'm at work over Xmas itself. And what I found was that I didn't want anything basted in oil and roasted. I had a vegan savoury loaf (made with chick peas, cashews, wheat gluten etc) which is sliced like a faux meat, and just steamed my veggies - a little bit of potato, carrot, parsnip, Brussels sprouts, and made some gravy. It was delicious. I had a small portion of vegan ice-cream with some sweet mincemeat stirred into it - like an ice-cream Xmas pud.

I went out for a Xmas meal yesterday evening. We were eating between 7-9pm.

I ate heavier than I would normally. I really felt the difference - it affected my sleep, and I woke feeling shoddy.

The earlier, lighter, dinner had become my normal, and my body didn't really like that change at all!

Nice to see you - so glad you are OK.

I think Body Thrive is a good one to just keep going over as the kind of foundation of the team. Other stuff can be shared as we come across it.

Hope this finds you well. emoticon My life has been crazy and I have been MIA around here. I will be running through the rest of Thrive by Cate Stillman, so that it is finished by the end of the year. There are various ways to bathe the eyes, and different things to bathe them with. I started off with an organic rosewater which came in a spray bottle - so I used to just spray each eye and hope that some went it. Then I came across a pretty ceramic eye bath, made by an artist, with a painting of the herb 'eyebright' on it. Now I do two sprays of the organic rosewater into the eye bath, and then put the eye bath over my eye, tip my head back and feel the little drop of rosewater go into my eye. I find the two sprays are enough for both eyes.

Other people do more of a wash - and there are different things you can use - depending on your dosha. I use rosewater as it's cooling and I'm basically quite a dry, hot person.

I did find a little video on YouTube which, although a bit whacky, was very instructional.

Hi Sweeties!

Gill, I would love to hear more about your morning eye routine. Do you open your eyes when you use the eye bath? What materials are you using? Last year I was on/off eye steroids for infections so I'll do just about anything to have clear bright healthy eyes again.

Julee, How are you doing?

Still digging my Ayurveda Morning routines. Most days it runs on pure habits, until I get to the weekend. Then I seem to forget all my good intentions.

Did anyone else sign up for Chopra's Free 21 Day Meditation course? That is one habit I need help with.

I started using an app called Fabulous - and the habits fit really well with ayurveda - they encourage habits like drinking water first thing, eating earlier, lighter dinners, getting to bed earlier, getting up earlier, doing some movement first thing in the morning. Cool!

I was awake in the early hours this morning - probably because I knew I'd set my alarm for 5.30 am! I didn't get up until 5.30 am though. I did my teeth-brush, tongue scrape, eye-bath - then did 5 mins Standing Like a Tree, then drank 500 ml (which is twice my usual amount), then made coffee, got dressed, and did my morning chanting practice. That took me an hour.

Yes, my hair is fine too. I did do the massage with a little oil last week, then washed my hair - I had to shampoo twice to feel my hair was free of oil. I think perhaps the oil-massage on the hair is more suited to people with Indian hair perhaps - all the Indian people I know have thick, dark hair. I think the dry scalp massage is good enough.

I have three different oils I use for my face at the moment - one is a pure, organic sweet almond oil; the other two are based on sweet almond oil but have additional oils and essential oils in them. They are from a local company called Kernow Spa:

Soothing Wonder Oil which has some eucalyptus in and is surprisingly refreshing and gives me a nice clear-headed feeling - I'm hoping it might protect me from viruses too (using it in my nostrils).
kernowspa.co.uk/product/soot
hing-wonde
r-oil-150ml/

Uplifting Wonder Oil which is citrus
kernowspa.co.uk/product/upli
fting-wond
er-oil-150ml/

I don't suppose they're particularly Ayurvedic - but they are nice oils, they get me to massage my face every morning (and sometimes in the evening too) and they make me feel good!

I'm good with the skin brushing and tongue scraping. I'm also continuing with bathing my eyes with rosewater - I now have a little ceramic eye-bath and just use a couple of drops of rosewater. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm doing it anyway!

My evening habit of turning off tech by 9pm and getting into bed 9.30 is going well (except on the work days when I don't get home until after 10pm).

ELD is going well too - that's more or less become my habit now. I turned down an evening meal recently because I didn't want to have a three-course meal with wine in the evening! It wasn't important enough to relax my habit for that event.

I've just had the luxury (on a day off) of sitting a reading the whole of the Habit 3 chapter, and the workbook etc. So am off to post on the Book Club thread.

I like just going through this book again and again - there's so much to learn. I've now got a lot of good habits that I didn't have before.

Gill - What kind of oil do you use on your face? I am doing a dry scalp massage most days. My hair is fine and even with washing it, oiling would not be a great idea. But maybe your idea of doing it when my hands are mostly dry and before I wash it would be ok. I am tongue scraping in the morning and at night, after I brush. I like it. I haven't dry brushed in awhile. I want to add that back into my self care routine.

Maureen - It is all starting to blend together. So my daily practices are growing, but they are mostly from Body Thrive. ELD is working pretty well, soup season is here. emoticon Getting to bed by 10 is working but sometimes I read too late, that is an issue. Back to working on daily meditation and yoga and planning on doing a detox later in the month. I do self massage and tongue scraping but I want to get back to oilpulling.

Dry massage on the scalp is nice. This morning I did massage my head with oil, then washed my hair.

I'm looking forward to watching Video 4 of the Chopra thing today. And reading the section in Body Thrive that we're working on - getting to bed on time!

Ha! Right, I did my tongue-scraping after brushing my teeth this morning. Then I massaged my face with oil (which I do every day instead of using creams and stuff), then massaged my scalp when there was really no oil left on my hands. It was nice. I can do that. I also thought, I can do the oil massage on my scalp when I'm planning to wash my hair anyway.

I listened to the guided meditation downloaded from the Deepak Chopra video - it was nice. I'll do it again today.

Thanks, Julee.

I watched Deepak Chopra and Dr Patel's video for today - about detoxification.

I already do the tongue scraping and self-massage. However, they suggest doing the tongue-scraping AFTER brushing the teeth - I've been doing it first thing in the morning. What does anyone else think about this?

Same with the massage - I tend to do (1) dry skin brush (2) wash (3) oil massage.

I don't want to massage my head with oil every morning either - that's too much work for me at the moment. But I do massage my face and ears every morning. I try to remember to massage my feet at bedtime.

I checked out the recipes for detoxification for the different doshas and fancied the Kapha one which was a creamy broccoli soup! The Vata one is pumpkin soup - I avoid pumpkins because they're so large and hard to handle! We don't tend to have canned organic pumpkin on the grocery shelves in the UK. Maybe I can use butternut squash instead.

Hello Sweet Ones!

Chopra's Dosha Quiz resulted in what I suspected. On other quizzes I usually get Pitta but I do have Vata tendencies so it's nice to know that you can be a two-dosha type person. For me, I believe Vata symbolizes my body and Pitta my mind. Vata 32; Pitta 32; and Kapha 26

Julee, Ughhh... I forgot to listen to her meditation. I watched her live at work and then got busy working. ::lol:: How did you like it?

I downloaded Talya Lutzker's Ayurvedic Vegan Kitchen from the library to see if I'll enjoy any of her recipes. The Kindle format is hard with a cookbook, but she does have intro chapters for each Dosha, with lists of acceptable foods. Can't wait till I get to the recipes.

What is everyone incorporating into their Daily lives from the 2 courses so far?

I've been consistent with the nostril breathing and sat for 10 minutes this morning in meditation. At lunch I'll try the grounding again. Forgot all about it this weekend. Oh, and I drank water first thing this morning.

I am trying to catch everywhere. LOL I like alternate nostril breathing, although it can be a challenge with a stuffy nose which I have today.

Gill - Breaking toes sounds very painful. I can see why you avoid going barefoot. I need ideas for grounding when it is too cold outside to go barefoot. I am fine standing or sitting in the grass but I cut myself more than once while walking around without shoes.

Maureen - What did you think of Talya's Day 1 meditation?

I got scared of walking barefoot after having broken (or badly cracked) toes on two separate occasions!

Sweet Dreams Gill!

I enjoyed the first seminar and during lunch grounded myself by walking in the grass. I'll try the alternate nostril breathing before meditation tonight.

Just did the alternate nostril breathing with Deepak Chopra - gosh, I did feel a bit light-headed afterwards!

I'm going to bed now - I hope it helps me sleep well.

Thanks Girls! I've joined both challenges, Chopra's and Talya's. I'm looking forward to getting back on track.

Hi Helen and Dianne!

Camping was a blast and I'll be joining the cousins next summer to explore the Rocky Mountains. I'm a minimalist and they are so over the top, generator and outdoor TV, but I embraced it and had fun.

I've just signed up for a free 4-week course with Deepak Chopra on healthy ageing - it sounds interesting

Yes, very much like Fall here now - cold in the morning and evening, hot when the sun comes out. But things are still pretty green......... only just starting to turn.

Hello!

Maureen - emoticon Do you have book you would like to work through? Or a challenge idea? I am open to pretty much anything, right now. emoticon I am running though Body Thrive again trying to reestablish habits I let go of during the chaos of my summer. We spent some time in the Adirondacks this summer and I found my happy place. emoticon It was beautiful. Hope you have a wonderful time camping. We are going camping, this weekend, in a state park on Lake Ontario. emoticon

Dianne - It is nice to see you! emoticon

Helen - Hello! emoticon We are all exploring here. It sounds like you a have incorporated quite a few Ayurvedic self-care practices! Do you have any favorite books or websites? Please share. emoticon Would you be interested in going through a book as a group? Or a challenge of some kind?

Gill - You continue to inspire me. I love your new profile photo! How are you? Is your weather fall like, yet? emoticon

So Glad to be back! During Summer I continued with a light morning routine of tongue scrapping, body brushing, and oiling the skin, ears, and nose. Would love to dive back into more Ayurveda routines. Are we starting a new study soon? I'll be camping the next 2 weeks in Sequoia and Yosemite but will have my phone with me.

I did buy a buy container of oil for my skin, but I don't like the stickiness of it on my clothes too much. It's summer now, so my skin isn't as dry. I just use fractionated coconut oil with essential oils, especially geranium for menopause symptoms and I rub it on my belly and under my arms. I also will rub some on my neck and shoulders with essential oils for pain as my neck and shoulders always seem to ache. I'll try to do the oil rubs again in the fall/winter.

It's nice to meet you!

Love,

Helen

Hiya, Helen - nice to meet you.

My day now starts with tongue scraping and a bit of rosewater for my eyes.

I skin brush before a bath or shower - not every day.

I've changed from lotions to oils for my skin care - face and body.

I have also adapted the earlier, lighter dinner regime and my last meal is usually between 4.30 and 6 pm. I sometimes have a hot plant-milk drink in the evening if I need it.

I have benefited a lot from learning a bit about these healthy routines.

Hello! I've been away from spark for a long while and thought I'd check back in.

As far as Ayurveda, I do daily tongue scraping. I do dry brushing with silk gloves when I feel like inspired to do it. I also have switched to eating in an 8 hour window, so I eat from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, but usually finish eating by 2. I made a lot of ayuverda spice mixes and add them to my cooking and to my hot drinks. I do a little yoga routine in the mornings, about 10 minutes long. I also eat whole foods, plant based, with occasional fish.

So, that's my story! I have a lot to learn. :)

Love,

Helen

I'm now fully switched over to having my main meal at lunch-time and having an 'earlier, lighter, dinner'

At first I really missed cooking that evening meal. I missed having the evening meal to look forward to!

Now I love having a larger packed lunch when I'm working, and I love cooking a midday meal at home if I'm not working.

My evening meal is now, most often, yoghurt with fruit and seeds. Today it was soya/coconut yoghurts with black cherries, blueberries, blackberries, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pine kernels. It is lovely. I ate it around 4pm (to fit round my shift work) and am not hungry now (9pm). Amazing!

I don't practice much pranayama - only when doing a guided meditation really. But I do use a kind of Sitali breathing when I'm running and get hot - I remember that the sucking air over the tongue is cooling.

Hello.
Because I believe I have a distorted view of what constitutes a meal... I went searching for information on what a meal looks like in Ayurveda. (I could get up on my soap box and go on and on about food in the United States but I will spare you that rant. emoticon ) Anyway, I came across this article and info graphic by Dr John Douillard, which I found helpful. I will be back with more information as I find it.
Be well.

Gill - I hadn't realized until I read your post what I have been doing. LOL The "picnic-atmosphere" is what is happening with me, too. We have been camping a few times. The problem is I keep eating the "picnic" foods when we get home. emoticon Time to get back on track. Hope you are enjoying your summer. I will be taking a look at the summer ideas in "Your Irresistible Life". Thank you for the reminder. emoticon I am maintaining my morning routine! I have even managed yoga while camping. I'm finding that the picnic-atmosphere of sunny days is leading to more sandwiches and crisps and fruity fizzy drinks, alcohol even. My weight is higher than in the winter - which seems wrong!

I am maintaining my morning tongue-scrape, eye-bathing, drinking water, pooping (most days).

I am also having the bulk of my food at lunch-time and eating an earlier, lighter, dinner.

I've been reading the Summer section of "Your Irresistible Life" and was pleased to find that I'd naturally chosen essential oils for my body lotion which were suggested for Summer. Also naturally now eating more fruit and salad, and almost no nuts. These little things encourage me to trust my intuition more and more.

I've been spending more time outdoors, of course, and moving more slowly through my days - more relaxed.
