Thank you both for your suggestions! We made it into the new home last night (sigh), my big fear yesterday was that our stuff just would not fit in the new house. We have boxes everywhere, but we are here. Knuckles - thank you for the great suggestion - to go through each item as I unpack. Yes, there are several items that I have not used in the past four years (my last move) - so they MUST go!

SecondChance48 - your moniker is perfect! We have a store here called Second Chance - it is a store that takes your nicely used furniture and sells it to those that would like to have it.

I am looking at this move as a great situation - thank God I moved now - before I stayed in the big house longer and acquired even more stuff! Now I see why these people are doing the small house movement.

I'm in the same situation going from a larger home to a smaller one I'm in the process of packing now and man where did I get so much stuff I don't know and don't know what to do with most of it although a good portion of things will be going into storage like you I'm moving in with family members I think what I don't sell I'll donate to charity or something

when my husband was in the military and we had people who came and packed up everything, I actually found that I got rid of more stuff when I unpacked it. I would be like "why did I move that, I haven't used it since the last move" :)

here are a few things I have heard and/or have used myself in one version or another.

1. One year rule....if you haven't used the item in a year then maybe its time to "rehome" it.

2. Is it a special item, or is it something you could replace easily if you ever did need one?

3. Does it hold a special memory for you and you are keeping the item just for the memory but are not really using it. Try taking a picture of the item, writing up the memory and putting it in a scrap book etc. then rehoming the item.

4. anything that is "broken", ripped or stained, any projects that you meant to do but just haven't gotten around to them for years even, probably need to go.

Well, today's the day - I am moving with my family from a 4,000 sq ft home to a 2,000 sq ft home. Why the move? Better schools, safer neighborhood and the opportunity for my daughter to get her own horse. We do not use the 4,000 sq ft of this house, but as we pack, I realize that we have been "hiding" things in the deep recesses of the closests "just incase". Now...we will have to determine what stays and what goes as all of this stuff will not fit in the new home. Any suggestions/recommendations for parting with the excess?
