It's A bigger idea than merely cleaning out yesterdays emails first. It's about not interrupting your work to answer or respond to e-mails whenever they arrive but scheduling your time to answer your e-mails only in the morning (so the mail you answer will be mostly the mail from the day before and the few e-mails you received in the morning -- That's why its called "Yesterbox"). I try to use a different but similar system. I only answer e-mail between 9:45 and 10:30 am and between 4:00 and 4:30 pm. It's much more efficient to answer your e-mail at set times than to interrupt your work whenever your computer beeps so you can turn your e-mail notifications off.
You can use this system whether or not you always empty your inbox.

I just read the original post. It's about taking care of yesterday's in box every day first. Makes quite a bit of sense, but it's just one idea.

I believe so but I haven't read the original posts for about a year. I'd suggest doing a search, I first read this on SPARKPEOPLE. It helps me to do this but I use my inbox as a tickler of sorts, so it is never totally cleared.

Basically it is an email system in which you read and deal with yesterday's emails today, and while you might look for personal emails in today's inbox, you focus on emptying yesterday's inbox. It helps clear up the inbox. It is a very useful management tool for my but I seldom empty the box.

I have been doing this for about a year. It is helpful but I cannot say it works well enough for me, other than as a part of unsubscribing, etc. There are too many items that cannot be dealt with in one day, even if they came through yesterday, so I have to leave them as a reminder until I can get them into a tickler file or resolve them. I read every email every day but I don't get them emptied out of my inbox right away.

Good idea but i try to get to the source of all the unwanted emails by blocking and unsubscribing to things that don't matter anymore. It's helped immensely. Good luck on the yesterbox.

I think Anne helped us by starting this thread and getting our attention. Yesterbox is a big start on getting your e-mail under your control. I just prefer to pick and choose my times to answer my e-mail. Mornings only may work for some, but I prefer 9:45 - 10 something and 3:45 to 4 something depending on how many e-mails there are to answer. I do like the rules posted in the linked Yesterbox topic for treating various types of e-mails each morning and setting the time out side of your chosen e-mail answering time to be devoted to non-email tasks.

When I used to work in an office I would respond to phone messages first thing, after lunch and then about a half hour before leaving. I wasn't dogged by calls all day that way and could concentrate on projects. This email idea is a good one.

Leo Babauta of ZenHabits.Net suggests a similar method that also works. Only answer E-mails two times a day, say 9:45 am and 3:45 pm if you work 8:30 to 5:00. I like this rule better since it gives me time in the early morning to focus on the most important tasks. This is important even for me in my retired life.

I like this idea, too. Anything that limits the time I have to spend on email is a good thing.

I just read about this idea last night. I was reading one of my many blog/emails that I get each day and came across this concept with a web link. When I got down to the bottom of the article I found out it was written by Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com. So here it goes.

Yesterbox is a way of getting through your emails. Instead of focusing on trying to get through all of today's emails (which just keep coming), your goal is to complete all of yesterday's emails - that way, you have a definite way to complete the goal. Here's a link to the article
www.yesterbox.com I was going to give this a try and see how it works.
