I'm just checking in on the slow & steady discussion.

If you think about it for a minute, it makes A LOT of sense! My old habit of losing quickly and gaining back just as quickly obviously hasn't worked over the years.

Losing slowly - and NOT gaining back because we've learned new habits - is the way to go!!

When I set my "in-between goals" I did the "math" myself - I figures on a weight loss average of 2 pounds per week and then added 2 weeks onto my "estimate" (knowing that I would not always lose 2 pounds per week). My first goal is to lose 10 pounds by Valentine's day, and I have lost 9 pounds so far, so I hope to make my goal. The bottom line, however, is that regardless if I lose one more pound this week or not, I have reached a goal because I am losing weight, eating healthier, exercising more, and generally living a MUCH healthier lifestyle than I was a month and a half ago.

When you enter in your goals here at the site it asks you to set a date and it will figure out your goal date for you. No math involved. You just tell it what you weigh and what you want to weigh, then you tell it how many pounds per week.

I take that number (for 1.5 a week) and add 2 weeks into it and set that as my goal date. I know I can lose more faster, but I don't WANT to. I want to take it slow and allow for some weeks of plateaus.

You know that's a good thought to have, that the date will come either way. Knowing the date you have if you give up that date will bug you. It would bug me if I knew I could be "at goal" by a certain date. BUT If you keep going you will be there or almost there by then.
I didn't do any math to figure that out, how do you ? Just assume 1 pound a week or so and hope for better? Just wondering as I have about 38 more pounds to go that's a bunch but less than a year 52, as I stated with about 52 to lose. I guess that's about a year's journey. Either way next year at this time...woo!!

I agree. Slow, steady, and consistent is the way to go. My estimated date for reaching goal is 08/01/2011. That seems WAY to long to wait!

The other day I realized that 08/01/2011 is going to come - NO MATTER WHAT. I can follow my usual pattern, lose the weight way before then - and then gain it back and be above weight on that date. OR, I can lose it slowly and be on my goal at that date.

I chose the second one.

1EMMA2011 - it is a lifestyle change for me too, making small changes and building on them each day amd week, my down fall before has been being unrealistic and burning out, and lookin gat things as a diet, this has to be a whole new way of thinking for me and it is going to take time to create new habits.

Congrats everyone - we will do it :)

I'm going slow also - my exercise plan is down and will continue to improve it, drinking water and now focus is on food - one meal at a time. It's slow going - breakfast is consistent and then this weekend i will start working on proper lunches. I feel a a lot better and just want to take it slow because for me it is a lifestyle change. Wishing everyone the best for today and I am thinking of you.

I'm also going slow and easy. It is a bit frustrating for me, but I have had some recent health issues that are preventing me from working out like I want to. However, I decided to focus on nutrition - and I have lost 1.5 pounds already (not a lot, but it's a start)!

Just remember the tortoise and the hare - slow and steady wins the race! emoticon

I decided to go about things (this time) in phases. My first phase was last week and it was the "Get my mind right" phase, this week is my "You can do it Dieting" phase, and next week is my "Work it while working out" phase. I knew I wanted to take it slow this time, as opposed to jumping in too fast and burning out because I wasn't prepared.

Nice!

I keep plugging away telling myself I'll get the energy back. It's reassuring to see others all ready reaping the benefits! (And myself too really. My energy may still be down, but I feel better in other ways.)

Congrats! And keep it up. :)

I've been on the Spark journey for one week and I feel an increase in energy and desire to do things. I haven't started the exercise portion yet but I have increased my daily walking. No change in weight but I won't let that sway my feeling.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
