Only if I don't have recess duty. I teach all of the classes (math, art, music, computer, p.e., etc.) to my students so I don't even have prep time, but it is all worth it.

Being in middle school I can go between classes. I'm dreading the first few weeks when I have to re-train my bladder.

I'm sure we've all had days when we realize at 3:30 we haven't gone to the bathroom once. The longer I teach, the more I feel like it's a prison sentence. I find myself saying, "people with real jobs don't have to (fill in the blank) or are able to (fill in blank). I hate the feeling of being told what I have to do (whether it's best for the kids or not) and not being free to do something as simple as pee when I have to. And of course, we put up with all this and get no appreciation.

This isn't the place for that, but it just sort of came out. Thanks for listening!

Bathroom breaks I wish. I'm dreading giving up water once school starts. It just not worth having to do the tinkle dance for hours wishing the clock would move faster and the kids would go to lunch. How do other people get through it?

School starts 7:55 first break 11:50.

I guess I'm pretty lucky! There is a bathroom right across the hall from my room, and I have 5 minutes in between classes (elementary music) so it's easy for me to go quickly. With all the water I drink, it's definitely a good thing!

Bathroom breaks? What are bathroom breaks?
I'm at the middle school and we are on block schedule. I go during passing period and lunch. And if I have a good class in my room, the bathroom is right outside my classroom and I will run out there for a potty break. Other than that, I am lucky I have a bladder made of steel. I also know that won't last long. Metal does tend to rust...

We have 1 bathroom. Just the 1 toilet for all the adults. Can you imagine? And Yes, other things always take your time when you need it most.

Sort of... breaks are written into our contract, but with only a 10 minute recess and a 35 minute lunch, it often gets eaten up with coworker questions and problem solving with students before I can get there. The other issue, is we all are trying to use the same two bathrooms at the same time. We work it out with teachers in the next room to cover emergencies. I haven't stopped drinking water. I don't want to end up with bladder or kidney problems, so I make it work.

I feel very lucky! As a high school teacher I am able to have bathroom breaks during class transitions. I drink a ton of water, especially in the morning. Sometimes I have to use the bathroom in the middle of class and I'll have the teacher next door keep an eye on my students while I step out for a moment.

Good luck!

I have the teacher across the hall watch my class. I also go when my class goes. I teach elementary, so we take breaks every hour.

at lunch or when the kids are in Music, or I ask my coworker to watch my class if it's an emergency. Not a good set up.

I have no breaks, but luckily have 5 paras and we cover for one another when we need to leave the room.

Wow...so several experience this. For years I have purposely avoided liquids so I don't have to go but I know I have to stop that practice. I will have to work out a deal with some people emoticon

For the past 6 years the HS I teach at has both period and block scheduling (it is a NIGHTMARE!!!) and I have always had 4 periods and 1 block so I am able to go between periods if need be (every 45 mins and sometimes I do) and during my block class if I have to go, I give them a break at the halfway point when the bell rings for those classes in periods to switch. I figure they can go out in the hallway and someone else can watch them :)

I have also learned how to use the restroom really really really really quickly!!! HAHAHAHAH

Another disadvantage of teaching, isn't it? We have one of the most stressful, under-appreciated jobs in the world! No time to pee and certainly no "coffee breaks" like other professionals have. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm lucky if I get 20 minutes for lunch. I am dreading going back; especially in this heat. Second floor, afternoon sun, and no air conditioning makes the first few weeks of school miserable!

Back to the bathroom question: the teacher next door to me will keep an eye on my class during the kids' break so I can use the restroom and I do the same for her. Thankfully, the bathroom was right beside my old classroom while I was pregnant or I'd have been in big trouble! :-)

I have not had bathroom problems until I started teaching. I run to the bathroom every two periods because I teach block schedule. It's not a good system and is another stressful thing about teaching.

Mine are far and few in between. I know I need to drink more water but I worry about having to go often while teaching and not having coverage anyhow.
