No. I have "given up" many things (like fast food, drinking pop everyday, eating candy) already for my healthy lifestyle change. I grew up Catholic and used to practice Lent so I am in NO WAY trying to be offensive or mock it; HOWEVER, for me personally, I would get nothing out of giving something up for 40 days just to have it/use it again liberally once those days are up. I do understand the religious meaning behind Lent, but I'd rather focus on doing good works everyday, not just during Lent, and living a well-rounded life everyday, not just for 40 days.

But for those of you giving up things, GOOD LUCK! emoticon

I'm giving up dessert for Lent this year and on a positive note, I'm going back to church more often.

Day 2 of Lent and I am safe at home with no fast foods in sight!! :-) This is really a challenge for me because I normally stop at McDonald's every morning for a large Diet Coke. (Can't explain it -- just like someone stopping for coffee.. they have the best Diet Coke in the world!) This morning I just grabbed a can out of the fridge and an insulated cup for my water. (I usually drink my diet coke and then refill the cup with water all day.) Life was dandy with Mickey D's -- my wallet was wealthier -- and my arteries thank me since I usually grab an egg mcmuffin while I am there too!! Keep up the good work teacher friends!

Terri

As I have already cut out pop and sweets and have been in a good routine with my morning excercise, I have given up Facebook. I want to spend more time reading or even get in some extra time on my wii fit.

I'm giving up eating after 7 pm. I snack mindlessly sometimes at night

Well, at the new year I decided that I no longer eat ice cream out of the container or movie popcorn. those are both difficult for me at times, but I am so proud to have stuck with it!! I don't honor Lent myself, and I think that I have my plate full right now and don't feel ready to make another commitment. But I will keep subscribed tot his thread so that I am inspired to work these thoughts in daily!

Much strength to you all!

I am making a commitment to read the Bible every night before bed. I was doing pretty well up until a week ago. I've never read the entire Old Testament.

I also like the suggestion of negative talk (of self and of others). But I am also going to add doing something positive every day for someone else. Lent is a powerful time of reflection on faith and one I plan to fully observe this year.

I like the idea of negative talk - of self and others. Maybe I'll borrow that idea. Being the good methodist girl I am, I do not usually give up something but it never hurts to start a new, positive tradition!

I believe in taking a positive attitude toward the world. My hope still is to leave the world a little bit better than when I got here.
