Yes. But then sometimes, the reverse, as with Sandy and Barlowe...

Thanks for all the commenhts. This is why I like this team. The sharing of ideas.
I've recently started The Tortilla Curtain by TC Boyle. It's another us and them, only this time with Mexicans. Isn't it disappointing to think how narrow minded (and small hearted) people can be?

I do so agree, Tammy. Nathan McCall has written a memoir also, which I'd like to read. I think for a first novel, he's to be applauded for choosing a most difficult subject and doing a great job in many ways. It will be interesting to see what he writes next...

I finished the book last night and I have to agree that the ending was a little disappointing. It did just seem to unravel. I found certain parts heartbreaking and at times wanted to punch Sean and others like him for their ignorance.

I think it's true that reaching a hokey happy ending resolution would have not been feasible because unfortunately there really is so much of that "us and them" attitude still today. I grew up in Detroit and live in the suburbs now. While I've never personally witnessed the attitudes against neighbors we see in the book, I'm sure it is there. Sadly there are just too many ignorant people out there that make judgments based on appearances. People are people and should be treated with kindness and respect, no matter what they look like on the outside.

That being said, this was a good read and definitely left you with food for thought.

Sara, you did nothing wrong and didn't ruffle any feathers. You did come really close to giving spoilers, but all is well. I'm not quite finished with the book but I did appreciate your insight.

Thanks, Jan, I'm glad what I wrote was OK. Looking back, maybe I got close to a spoiler or two...guess one should be careful about that even though I knew several people had finished the book.
Yes, Barlowe was such a great character! emoticon emoticon

Sara,
Not at all! No feathers ruffled here. I always enjoy your comments and appreciated this one. A few people had earlier said they were reserving books at the libarary and I just added that as another comment. Maybe I should have started a new thread?
I too lived in the south as a kid - Virginia. So grew up both in Westchester County in New York AND Winchester, VA. Things were different, but also alike. I think Mr. McCall shows that a lot of the feelings some might think no longer exist still do, albeit in a different form.
For me the book was sobering, but also gave hope that [some] people are still willing to grow. And I really liked that Barlowe (love that name!) well, don't want to give it away, but like what happened with him.

Ok, just askin'...did I do something wrong by writing such a detailed reaction to the book? I realize it's a controversial subject...but I thought we were supposed to talk about the book? Or should we just Like or Not Like it?
Don't want to ruffle any feathers here...sorry if I did.

I totally agree Chippee! I rarely buy books these days, most I get from the library. If there's a knitting book I'm interested it I get it from the library first. That way I can be sure it's one that I REALLY want.

Just in reply to Sara's comment on the 11th. As I told my daughter when she was growing up and asked to buy books at school (which we sometimes did), "If I bought every book I read, I'd be in the poorhouse!"
Let's hear it for libraries. What a gift!!! emoticon

Finished it last night. Loved the characters for the most part but thought the portrayal of Sean was not quite credible. Maybe I've been out of the south too long...then again maybe not. Lots of good food for thought here. I lived in a mixed neighborhood in the 80s in Miami, and things were not that tense. But then the whole King heritage was not an issue either, and Miami was more "Cuba north" then rather than the real Deep South. Our neighborhood never really gentrified so I have never been in the middle of that & I think it would be horrible. I liked our neighborhood the way it was.

The ending was quite believable but disappointing, I thought that the different plot threads just unraveled at the end and didn't really reach a resolution. This may be inevitable given the subject matter, and it was good that he didn't give us a "hokey happy ending." I was happy about how Barlowe's situation turned out and enjoyed the way he struggled with being able to trust his relationship with a high-end coffee lover... emoticon
Maybe there is hope for me yet! emoticon

Oh gosh. Love it, but it's getting close to me. I grew up in the south and have lived in black neighborhoods as well as white ones.

I just finished Room and I agree that we should save it for March? It's an amazing book and I think that if everyone requests it from their library now they have a good chance of having it by March. I was #28 at my library but since they have multiple copies the list moved quickly.

I've started them. I'm curious to hear thoughts on it.

I'm a little late this month...was finishing another book I got for Christmas!
Okay, so they both look wonderful and are on Kindle, but it looks like "Them" is the one most people are getting, so are we reserving "Room" for another month??? I'm going to jump in and buy Them and see how that goes. Happy reading! And thanks for choosing contemporary authors...I'm a big fan of supporting contemporary writers!

I got a copy of "Them" from my library and it looks good. Since it may take a while to get *Room* at the library, I'm wondering if we could plan it for later. I've read it and it is an amazing book, well worth the wait.

I know it's a little late, but this month's selection is your choice between:

Room by Emma Donoghue

Them by Nathan McCall

The are both a little different than what we normally read, but that's fine. Looking forward to some discussion on either or both.
