That's like asking me why breathing matters to me.

1)It expands my view and appreciation of the world and people.

2)It dismantles barriers, untruths and fears.

3)It challenges us to challenge our truths, values and views of the world.

4) It enriches my life.

5) It makes me feel connected.

6) I can hear my voice.

7) I grow from reading.

Literature helps me get to know so many different people, places, times, histories...yes, it expands my world and helps me learn about so many things! How people react in different situations, what others' inner landscapes are like, what others think about. Sometimes it's similar to me and sometimes very different, but I can almost always empathize with other people to some extent -- even when they are characters I don't particularly like.
I suppose I do care more about character than about plot. Although a good plot, to me, is (or seems like) the inevitable result of who the characters are!

Literature expands my world. Through literature I get to experience what it was like to travel the Mississippi with Mark Twain, to be inside debtors prison with Charles Dickens, or to grow up in the South with Harper Lee. It's a wonderful conversation with people who witnessed things I will never see and have left behind their observations for me to learn from and to enjoy.

For me, literature is MOST important for two reasons:

1. It captures a historical moment, and through literature I can gain a sense of time, place, and situation. I consider literature artifacts of historical trends. If I want, for example to understand how Western civilization's ideas about race changed after the abolition of slavery, there's no better way to track that than through fictional representation.

2. Sheer, absolute, tongue-wagging PLEASURE. Reading is DELIGHTFUL for me. It thrills my body. I love it.

I have to second that! It would definitely be because of learning and expanding my mind.

I never really thought about it but my top reason would definitely be because I love to learn and literature can take me to so many different places to meet so many different people without leaving my home.

I mean, we could all list off thousands of reasons. But what are the top reasons that literature is important, in your opinion?
