The warm weather brings out little beasts who love to romp, which is fine…but not in your house! Here’s a natural mouse repellent…

Mice hate the smell of peppermint. Put a few drops of oil of peppermint (available at health-food stores) on cotton balls, and place them wherever you think a mouse has visited or entered your home—near a hole in a dog-food bag, near the garage door, in the kitchen pantry corners closest to the basement, etc. This is also a good reason to have mint plants planted in and around your home. Hopefully they’ll get the hint and find another place to invade.

Might be worth a try!

Mr. Buzzy and his little buddies are back. But I know his weak spot! Flies are repelled by the herb thyme—so if you want to force them outside, fill a plant mister with a cup of thyme tea. With kettle and measuring cup, brew a teaspoon of dried thyme in an eight-ounce cup of just-boiled water for five minutes. When it cools, fill a spray bottle and spray the window frames, countertops…wherever and whenever the flies tend to congregate. It is safe and nonchemical! You can use it every day, if need be—it’s free of chemicals and harsh smells. But flies hate it and will think twice before sneaking inside your home!

What a great idea and you use less flour too!


Lots of times all you need is a little flour to dust a countertop for kneading or to coat a breast of chicken. Instead of lugging out a big bag or canister, here’s what to do.

Get a large salt shaker like this or cheese shaker like this or a large, clean spice container. Fill it with flour, and keep it in the freezer. (If you use a cheese shaker…or any container with holes larger than a salt shaker…keep it in a Ziplock bag to keep freezer-moisture out.)When you need just a little bit for dusting or coating, it’s easier to reach for the freezer-shaker instead of lugging out that sack or big container of flour. It’ll keep your pantry or cabinet free from flour spills, too.

Not a big milk drinker? Try this healthful sleep elixir. It's not a tea. Believe us…it's an easy pour away…

Try drinking a six-ounce glass of pure, warmed grapefruit juice one-half hour or so before you go to bed. We like to pop a half mug into the microwave and heat it for 40 seconds…you don't want it boiling. If you need to have it sweetened, use a bit of raw honey. Grapefruit contains tryptophan, the same substance in turkey that makes everyone nod off after the big Thanksgiving feast.

Caution: Grapefruit can interfere with certain medications—check with your doctor before trying this remedy. In addition, diabetics and people with honey allergies should not use honey.

Have you ever pushed your luck and flushed too many times to try to undo an obvious clog in the old commode? Here's what to do to prevent an inevitable overflow.

If, after you flush, the water is rising dangerously high, quickly turn on the cold water in the sink as well as in the bathtub or shower.

The cold water coming through the pipes will cause a vacuum that will suction the water in the toilet down the drain.

Commit this tip to memory. It's a great thing to know, especially when you go to somebody else's home…except they might think that you're making yourself a little too much at home when they hear the shower running.

I found this very interesting. My son downloaded an app for our computer that takes out the blue and changes the lighting from daylight to more subtle light as the sun goes down. I don't feel as hungry anymore either.

Why Your iPad Makes You Hungry

Regular use of smartphones, tablets and laptops may make you eat more. These devices emit blue light, which can activate brain regions that regulate appetite and metabolism.

Recent finding: 15 minutes after exposure to blue light, study participants felt an increase in hunger that lasted for two hours.

Love this tip from Household Magic Daily Tips!

Are you tired of stepping outside in humid or cold weather—or stepping inside in cool weather—only to have your glasses fog up, making you look silly and creating hazards galore? Here's what to do…

Smear tiny dollops of foam shaving cream on the inside and outside of your lenses, then wipe them off with a soft cloth. Doing this leaves a very thin, invisible coating on the lenses, which will help fend off moisture and prevent the glasses from fogging up each time you go out in weird weather (or even while dumping spaghetti into a colander!). We've also found that a film of shaving cream keeps plastic eyeglass lenses cleaner longer. We apply the foam every morning (when we remember) or before we know for sure that we will encounter an extra-steamy situation. You can also spit on your lenses the way scuba divers do to their face masks, but we think shaving cream is a lot more pleasant to work with.

That was a great party you threw, and you whipped through cleanup in no time at all—except to save steps, you nested your tall glasses together. Now you have some unique glass sculptures that will not pull apart! Here's what to do…

Submerge the bottom glass in hot water, which will expand it...then pour ice-cold water in the top glass, which will contract it. Once you have the hot-and-cold thing happening, you should be able to pull the glasses apart easily.

I know the energy drinks can be addictive too. Do you use anything to keep you going during the day? I have my Extra Energy Green drink first thing in the morning.


If you want to maintain steady, optimum energy avoid energy drinks, herbal energizers and energy supplements. They will stimulate you in the short-term, but lead to a big energy slump a while later.

Depending on what climate you live in, you might be getting ready to sow some seeds or plant some seedlings! Here's the word on what to put where, based on how much sun you get.

If a section of your garden is bathed in sunlight, consider growing corn, melons, peppers and/or tomatoes. They thrive in the sun.

If a section of your garden doesn’t get much sun, consider growing lettuce, pumpkins and/or spinach, which all thrive in the shade.

Dryers are so full of hot air. And all this energy eventually disappears out a vent while your clothes take a long beating. Here's a trick to cut drying time considerably…

Toss in a dry hand towel with each dryer load. The dry towel will absorb moisture from the wash, then dry quickly and continue to absorb more water.

Is your dryer sluggish? You probably know not to cram it with too many items. But an average load of clothes or towels should be dry by the end of one cycle. If they're not, you could have an airflow problem.

Dishcloths and sponges often harbor a stale smell that just won't go away, even after running them through the washing machine or dishwasher. Old sponges you can throw out, but dishcloths are made to recycle. Here's what to do…

Soak your dishcloth (or sponge, if you're not quite ready to throw it out) overnight in a solution of one cup hot water (we like to boil the water first), one-half cup white vinegar and three tablespoons table salt. This amount is enough to soak one eight-inch square dishcloth…double up the portions if you are soaking more than one cloth. In the morning, rinse out the cloth with warm water. The cloth or sponge should be stink-free and ready to clean!
