Wow! I know when my mom's mouth is dry because her voice becomes very raspy and kind slurred. She has dentures and they stick to the roof of her mouth and her lips to her teeth. It makes her hard to understand when she talks. She keeps gum handy rather than sucking on candy. Her mouth is also sore, so they now have her on a new med for that. I am assuming an antibiotic.

Because I have dysfunctional vocal cords my DR.s have recommended a minimum of 88 oz a day. When I add the meds that dry me out then I need to keep my throat moistened so that it doesn't bleed and cause more issues. Thank you for the information though. I have a friend who has low sodium levels and now I know why.

SOPHIEMAE2007, you never know when you post something how far it will reach. What you said about your mother, sodium and drinking too much water was EXACTLY what I needed! I've had this problem and never got a good answer from the doctor. Now I know and I'll start making sure I keep that water intake to a reasonable level! Thank you, you may have saved my life!

Well the first week has come and gone and I am down 3 lbs!! I have cut back on the amount of food and making it better food that I am eating!! I am trying to get more water in too! I won't go up to 96 oz. My mom has had issues with her sodium levels (way low) and they said it was because she was drinking so much water. It flushes the sodium out of the body, which needs to be balanced between the sodium and water, and it made her confused and she couldn't communicate well. They cut back the amount of water she is to have a day, which now is only about 6 cups, she was drinking a lot more than that. With that said, be careful with drinking so much water.

I've had a very busy week so I didn't get around to making any of the recipes that I wanted to try. Maybe this weekend. I did make a quinoa porridge that wasn't too bad and it lasted me for 4 meals for breakfast. I have eaten a lot more fresh veggies and drank my water. I have tried to stay away from pop and fast food, but with the way this week went I did have it a couple of times because of time issues. What an excuse!! But I did leave out the french fries on one day. Even with having the fast food and pop, I did step on the scale and did notice a drop in weight. I won't know my "official" weight until Sunday as that is when I really weigh myself!! So I hope with the changes, I am lowering my cholesterol as well!!

NPA - That gives me some more incentive!

I went through a couple of cookbooks I have, Mediterranean and Low-fat/Low-cholesterol, and found some recipes I would like to make. I have made up a grocery list, which I need to go shopping anyway, to at least prepare a few of these during the week. I know I have not eaten really "balanced" meals to make me feel full and to get the proper nutruition, so I sort of planned out a menu for the week. Need to tweek it some as far as adding side dishes and snacks. Snacks are easy...nuts, fruits, veggies. Salad will probably be my sidedish in the evenings when I am working. Just easier that way.

Now I just want to see if I can find some coupons online to help me save some money too. I figure I will go to this local produce market, to pick up my fruits and veggies, where they are a little cheaper than in the grocery store.

Here's to good health and good eating!!!

It has taken some time and some mistakes but in being more diligent about my food tracking I have discovered that on the days I ate my Mediterranean diet program I automatically was with in my range on almost everything. I am still working on learning the new way but it is those days that I also show a weight loss.

Sometimes these problems make our a-ha moments. Mine was when I was told I had PCOS and insulin resistance.
It's our chance to understand how healthy lifestyle is important (and NOT optional), and to really incorporate it in our daily life.
So - good luck emoticon . Turn it into a good thing emoticon

First I need to make out a menu of what I am going to eat and then go grocery shopping this weekend to get what I need. I know I need to stock up on fresh veggies and fruit. I also need to learn to eat in moderation. If I am going to snack, I need to make it healthy snacks. Quit buying the chips and pop. I also need to get back to walking, which actually I have this past week. I also need to incorporate strength training. I have some dvds I need start using.

My dad had the high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease and I have brothers that have had the same issues. My mom has been pretty healthy up until the end of March when she tripped and broke her leg. She had emergency surgery and has been in a rehab since. She is 85. It is hard to see someone that had been fairly active to someone sitting in a wheelchair and losing her strength and being depressed. She hasn't been eating well and it has zapped her energy. We were hoping she would be able to go home this weekend, but I don't know.

I agree that we cannot control our DNA, but we can control our lifestyle! Oh and eye issues run in my family too -- on my mom's side.

Wow! Yes, that was a 'wake up call'!! So what is your first line of attack, or defense, on resolving this?

I too, worry about all the side effects of not eating healthy. I know that since beginning this program my cholesterol keeps dropping. Sometimes I think about all the other repercussions of not eating healthy. My mother has diabetes. She's never eaten healthy... and NEVER exercised... and she's 87!! Her quality of life is questionable... although she still lives alone and gets out and about. I think to myself, "What if she had been living a healthy lifestyle? What would her quality of life be today?"

They say a lot of what happens to us is imprinted in our DNA! Can we change this imprint by living a healthier lifestyle? I know that since I've been eating the Mediterranean Way I've felt so much better from my joints to my clarity of mind.

I hope that you will be able to change the outcome of your eye problem. We are all here for you to help you along the way!

I know I don't get in enough fresh fruits and veggies. I agree I need to take this a step at a time. I do like almonds and walnuts, so I can get in some healthy fats that way, besides using olive oil. I've only had quinoa once, so I can't wait to try again. I have another recipe that I found on Martha Stewart for a cookie type snack using quinoa that sounded good and it used dried apricots and pistachios. So I can't wait to try these recipes for something different if I want a sweet and I am all for sweets!! I do have some dark cocoa roasted almonds at home. A service size is just enough to fill the need for that sweet crunch I like. Kind of like that sweet/salt mixture.

Well, you know what you need to do and that's a big first step! Remember that on a mediterranean diet your fats are healthy ones from olive oil, nuts, seeds, etc. As with everything, moderation is the key. Don't try to change your whole diet, but like everything in Spark, pick one area to focus on (like eating your minimum 5 fruits/veggies a day) and practice that until it becomes a life-habit. I always thought I ate a lot of healthy foods until I started using the Spark tracker and some days realized I hadn't gotten to those 5 fruits/veggies and had to scramble to make them part of my dinner! You have a great motivation to make these changes- your health!

I'm excited about the quinoa burger recipe! One of the things I discovered when I started this lifestyle was quinoa. I'd never heard it, got brave and tried it, and now I'm addicted to it! (I just know when I get to heaven there'll be a chocolate version of quinoa! emoticon )

I went to the eye specialist today and he found a spot in my eye that appears to have some damage from no blood flow. It is very very tiny spot, but enough to show up on his visual exam. He took pictures of my eye and used dye to watch the blood flow to see if there was a blockage or leakage. He said this could be a circulation issue and caused by a number of conditions like anemia, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease. He is going to send a letter to my regular doctor to "suggest" to get these test done. I know I had low iron, borderline diabetes, and high cholesterol and I am on meds for the cholesterol. My diet sucks big time!! So this is just telling me that I really need to hunker down on getting things in control. No more fat, I know you have to have some, but I need to cut back big time!! Need to get more veggies, fruits, and grains in!!! I really do not want to go on more medication. It was my goal this weekend to buy more healthy foods and introduce something new that I have tried at least once a week.

I have to do this!!

I found this recipe on WholeLiving.com. Greek-style Quinoa Burgers. Thought I might give it a try as I bought some quinoa to try in another recipe.
