The reason I like the Mediterranean....style is because it does NOT tell me "no no" just to "do it differently." The nutritional aspect just makes sense. Know what you are eating with respect to both nutrition, quailty and portion size and then throw in a treat occasionally. Add a little exercise into the mix and viola!

I think completely cutting out a particular food group is not a great idea because of the mental game. Like if you tell me I'm not allowed ANY carbs....what do you think I want? Yeah, CARBS and lots of 'em!

I'm sorry there isn't a group for the Sonoma Diet but I'm glad you are here and hope you will be at home here! Welcome!

Haley

There are several "diets" out there that are based on the fundamentals of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid. They are meant to become new healthy lifestyle, not an odd fad diet. The Sonoma Diet is one of the best of these. It is a blend of menu/recipe ideas inspired by a blend of Mediterranean and "California cuisine".

It has rules like:
Eat slowly and mindfully
Eat wholesomely (and seasonally and locally and...)
Eat in a relaxed setting and with others etc etc

There is an emphasis on eating whole grains and berries and other fruits and vegetables and heathy fats like almonds and olive oil etc etc ..... essentially boils down to follow the Mediterranean Pyramid (but maybe allowing a little more meat and wine servings).

There is a heavy emphasis on portion control (as apposed to calories) as it is trying to make it easier to utilize as a lifestyle.

It wants you to mindfully east wholesome foods in reasonable portions in the right, satisfying amounts and to eat slowly and enjoy.

Sound familiar?

All of their recipes work great with TMW.
They have a website that I think isn't free BUT there is a free mini-newsletter distributed thru everdayhealth.com which I've always enjoyed ... a small couple paragraphs of information and a daily tip.... usually
Monday has a recipe
Tuesday has some type of goal or exercise-related or other misc topic
Wednesday usually highlights some specific food (or food group)
Thursday has something like a cooking method highlighted
Friday generally has a nutrition or health focus

Welcome to the team.

What makes the Mediterranean Way so different from most other diets is that it is really NOT a diet at all but a way of life! There are NO 'NO-NO's!' Don't you think that's great?

The plate size is great to do because that helps control portion size. I too don't eat too many grains but not by choice but because of necessity... I tend to get a little problem with gluten, so I am very careful. I replace my grains requirement with fiber to become more balanced.

Thank you for sharing your Sonoma experience with us, and again... Welcome to the Mediterranean Way!

Welcome to the team!
I started on spark with 1200 calories and it fitted on your size plate. I started strength training along with cardio and have gradually built it up and now I have a large dinner plate and 1850 calories on some days. My proportions are about the same as yours, but I make sure I get my fat quota as well. I try to have less saturated fat and go meatless about 2 days a week. I eat wholemeal most of the time. You don't need a cookery or diet book! There is plenty of info on here. Get tracking those calories, I found that really helpful! I have one pound to go and I will have lost 56lb, some on my own before I joined spark. Good luck with your goals! emoticon

The Sonoma Diet is similar to the Med Way. You eat by plate size and fill your 9 inch plate with 1/2 veggies, 1/4 whole grains and 1/4 lean protein. Breakfast is whole grain cereal with skim milk and fruit or egg and whole wheat toast. Sugar is a no no and all pasta, rice, etc. is brown or whole wheat. This is an easy diet to follow and i lost 18 lbs but have since gained it back because I got bored and thought I could do it better myself which never works. Now, I want to get back into it. Wish there was a team here as it really is a great way of eating. This team is similar. I never had to count calories or track my food, just ate what I was supposed to eat in the portions allowed. There are 2 cookbooks out, one recent one and you can get them at a book store. The Sonoma Diet Cookbook is the first one. And there is a Sonoma Diet Book which tells all about it and foods allowed and recipes and meal plans.

Pursue the things that make you feel alive and fill you with joy and balance.!
