I hope you are using quality oils and with those and around your face, diluting them. I usually can handle most oils neat, but have used the peppermint for headaches before and it is a hot oil. The fumes will end up making your eyes burn. Won't really hurt you (unless you get the oils in your eyes), but your eyes will end up burning.

I've been introduced to essential oils.
Melaluca (spelling?) works wonders on cold sores and boils and gobs of other things I'm still learning about.
Pepperment oil helps with head aches and sore muscles.

And we all lived happily ever after...

Jackie, the problem with the cinnamon pills is I think they are the cinnamon like you get in a grocery store. At least they don't say they are Ceylon cinnamon. Mine don't. I had a really large bottle of them. The spice store I go to has Ceylon cinnamon as well as regular cinnamon and Saigon cinnamon. So if the cinnamon isn't Ceylon, even if cinnamon will help it probably won't do much. One thing about it, though, is it is just a spice so it shouldn't hurt anything if you take it in a capsule or mixed in something or as cinnamon toast. Now that I think of it, I am wondering if it is Ceylon in what I have.

There is something else that one of my friends was told to take by her doctor. Chromium Picolinate (or something like that for the 2nd word). Her doctor said it would help keep her from wanting sugar. Doesn't work to get rid of my sweet tooth though.

DH was referred to a Dr. who prescribed natural remedies. DH will believe any Dr. but not me :) that is OK. But this Dr. prescribed daily cinnamon pills so DH bought an ample supply of cinnamon pills.

The next Dr. prescribed something else and he didn't need cinnamon pills so he threw out the huge supply of them. I'm the tightwad...thinking cinnamon pills can't hurt so I'll try them to use them up (never throw out anything) and I've been taking one a day for about two years and FINALLY USED THEM UP! Never felt any effect from them and consider this a safe experiment and at least I didn't waste them by throwing in the trash...I do safely dispose of medications we don't need anymore this just wasn't in that category...

Jackie I'm a Halloween baby but many years ago.

5'1.5" - I shrunk from 5'4"
Summer: Minesota
Winter: Arizona (as of Dec. '08)

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

I learned about turmeric and a couple herbal teas from my doctor, so though they aren't drugs they are from the doctor.

I have learned about some other types of herbal teas or spices for digestive problems or diabetes. Cinnamon, for instance, has been shown to aid in blood sugar control, but only one kind of cinnamon (Ceylon, which is true cinnamon) and it only works for some people. I've also been reading reports on essential oils and what they do.

One of the illegal plants was comfrey. If you get your hands on an old book of healing herds it is in there. Well the FDA said the comfrey caused liver problems. Being a math teacher that loves this kind of thing, Mom used the data they had for mice and did the math to make it for humans. If you drank 5 gallons of comfrey tea a day for 6 months it will hurt your kidneys. Don't want to be crude, but I have a vision of someone sitting on the throne in the bathroom with a 5 gallon jug. Lets face it if you drank 5 gallons a day of anything you would have liver problems.

Comfrey is for infections. If the infection is internal, you drink tea. If in the mouth you use it like a mouthwash, external, you put the wet comfrey leaves in a thin cloth bag and put it on the invention. The government now allows comfrey to be sold for external use, only from certain suppliers, an I haven't tried just using it as a tea for fear of what they have put in it.

Oh wow MaryAlice, you bring up a good point, which had completely skipped my mind. there's no money to made with herbs so of course the FDA doesn't want anyone to take that route.
Now, I don't believe in herbs that alter the mind or lead to stronger drugs, (this includes prescriptions), but I digress.
When I have a headache, bee balm tea helps me and that grows in my garden. =) I certainly didn't learn that from a doctor.

I use to live next-door to the Indian medicine woman. I learned how to use the leaves of this plant to fight infection, leaves of that one for upset tummy and on and on. She never told me the names of the trees. I have moved 2000 miles. Non of the trees grow here and the only 2 I know the names of are illegal

Wow Niteman. You really nailed that one.

I have learned a lot from classes I took regarding nutrition and diabetes. My doctor actually had me sign up for it so... he gets credit.

Now there's a loaded question. I don't "know" anything from that source or any other, for that matter. Health information is fluid. What's true today may be false tomorrow and vice versa. Then there's all the in-between stuff. All the misinformation and disinformation being distributed via our amazing new information channels that didn't even exist not many years ago makes it really hard to make decisions concerning health and wellness.

My primary trust still lies with my doctor, but I'm more likely to question him these days to make sure he's certain what he's telling me is the latest and best information available. I'm also not shy about second (or more) opinions.

One thing I certainly won't do is put much faith in anything I find online without much research and verification. For every online point of view, there is usually another and directly opposite opinion. Oftentimes... no, most times, those opinions on both sides are tainted by personal bias and money or just lemming mentality.

Having said all that, I think the medical establishment is doing a pretty decent job based on the simple fact that our life expectancies are still increasing despite our increasingly unhealthy lifestyles. The world population born in 1800 was expected to live till the age of thirty-nine or so and for 2016 it was aged seventy-two. I've got a year left!
