When I was about 23 years old I borrowed $100, (for the deposit on my rental), from my ex-husband's sister in law. I'm sure she thought she'd never get it back. I mean, I wasn't even part of the family anymore. I paid her back immediately. I know she was shocked. And back then, to both of us, that was a lot of money.
It was the first time I had asked to borrow money; humiliating, and it was the last time I ever did so. If it meant having to go without food or whatever, then so be it.

I agree. There was a time that I loaned people money and it cost me a lot of friends because once they had the money they spent the rest of their lives avoiding me. If I can't afford to give it away, they ain't gettin' it. So, accept a gift if I like you well enough to offer or look elsewhere. Makes it easier all around.

I don't loan anyone money. If one of my kids has a need I will give them money. It is very rare that they ask.

Over the years I have loaned money to people in both large amounts and small amounts. The large amounts were paid back in full, with interest.

Smaller loans were made and all were paid back with the exception of two. Today I would still help someone out.

I have never had a great deal of money but have loaned what is a lot to me to a close friend and family members. Most paid me back some I will never get back.

I've never been in the position to be ABLE to give money away.
However, my father was very generous with my husband and me when we were going through his health crisis and were in a horrible bind.
We 'borrowed' the money, but when we went to pay it back my dad refused to take it. He let it be a Christmas present of sorts.
But it was a good sign to him, that we had the money to pay him back and were willing to do so.

If I had the money, I would gladly give it. If they pay it back, fine. If not, fine.
But I would NOT give it to someone who proved continuous irresponsibility.

And we all lived happily ever after...

I did it for a friend and he did for me. That worked out fine back then. Now my friends all know they can't borrow from me. I don't have anything to lend them.

My money is only half mine so it would not only be my decision and between the two of us I think we would not lend money. We did lend an adult child money for house down-payment (not what was a large amount to us but was to her) and it was repaid within a month as was previously agreed.

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

No I only lend money if I can afford to never get it back as family and friends tend never to pay back.

RMUL2013, whatever a "great deal of money" is to you. I know it's different to different people, at different times of their lives.

It would depend on how much a "great deal of money" is considered to be.

What would you do or say if a close friend or family member asked to borrow a great deal of money from you?
