Never took classes, learned on my own probably while camping at a state park.Young.
Well, I guess we did have swimming in 10th grade. But I don't remember the details.

And we all lived happily ever after...

I think the class I was almost drowned at was with the grade school I went to. It was kind of like a summer camp, too, and we went on different trips/classes like that. The instructor was supposed to be teaching us how to breathe in swimming, but she just kept holding my head under water so there was no way to learn to breathe. No way to take a breath and then blow it out when under water and come up for another breath.

these were so fun to read. Thank you everyone for sharing.

Darlene, YIKES! Was your mom at the class where the instructor almost drowned you?

I can swim, but haven't been for a few years since I can't afford the gas to go to the warm pool. I'm thinking of trying the little one at the closest rec center.

I learned in 7th grade when it was required in gym class. I probably wouldn't have learned if it hadn't been required because I went to one class when I was little and the instructor almost drown me.

Mom took us to lessons in summer at the local beach. I only remember being in the shallow water doing the back float. I think I was traumatized (my sister may have dunked my once or twice) because I still do not like being in water over my head even after adult lessons at the pool. I do not swim well.

I do however enjoy the Aqua Fit classes at the pool. I tend to stay where my feet touch bottom. emoticon

Our Mom took us to local lakes often as it was important to her that we learned to swim but it was a couple weeks at camp when I was 7th and 8th grades when I learned to swim more than 20 feet.

My 8th grade summer my Realtor Dad bought a summer cabin and that meant daily swimming. We upgraded to better and larger cabins 3 times each with better swimming areas and dock and then power boats until I married at age 21.

I took WSI (Water Safety Instructor) in my first year at college then got summer jobs teaching swimming and life saving until I married.

During winter at college I worked at the school pool as a life guard and I was accepted as a Dolphin, (the synchronized swimming club) and was part of a year end show. Also during college years (we still lived at the cabin in summers and my family had a power boat) I met my future husband from across the lake and we water skied mornings, evenings, weekends and any other time we could fit in. We with a friend performed at the Minneapolis Aquatennial one year in a water skiing show one of which I was the top person on a 3 person stunt.

Yes, water was a big part of my life and continued after we married as we always lived on the lake and later ocean until we re-retired in AZ and now make do with a couple of pools at the club :)

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

I learned well before my teen years as that was a major recreation destination for us... going to the various lake parks and pools in the area. There was also a guy who owned a grocery store in the area who took a station wagon load of us 'downtown' kids to the Y every week which went on for many, many years and there is a memorial group dedicated to his memory still active at our Y.
