I took piano for a few years from around 8. I kept playing it fairly regularly through at least high high school. Now it isn't very often and I can't remember the notes I am reading, so I have to write them down.

Now I have an autoharp, but I haven't been able to play it very well. I can't figure the timing without having some melody. I have found some sites on youtube that I am going to try to see if I can learn it.

I also tried guitar, but after a few months I couldn't hold the strings down enough to get anything more than a thud from them.

I have played at playing the guitar for many years. I have seven guitars and still can't play. I'm a guitar collector, not a musician. Just to prove it, I also have several harmonicas and a keyboard that I can't play either.

I played flute in 6th and 7th grade but wasn't very good at it.
It also doesn't help that I can't take pressure to perform for other people, lol.
When I wanted to quit, my band teacher asked me to try clarinet before quitting band altogether. I wasn't happy with THAT instrument either.

What I REALLY would have wanted to take was piano. But I was too shy about asking my parents.

My little sister ended up playing flute, PIANO...we were given a giant PINK piano one year and then purchased a better one later, and then saxophone.

I taught myself by ear, also, and enjoy making up my own music.
One of these days I'm going to have our praise group at church put my music to paper for me.

None of my kids took lessons, but they have all dabbled to one degree or another in many musical instruments. The most musical is my 21 yr old son who taught himself to play harmonica, guitar, violin, banjo, piano...and even tried bagpipes.

And we all lived happily ever after...

I always wanted to play piano. My parents would not allow me to take lessons, so I taught myself a little by ear on the neighbors piano. then the neighbor let me put the letter notes on the keys in crayon to lern them.

My yountest son wanted to learn violin and so he did and then switched to piano. He just recently stopped piano to concentrate on math and science since he wants to be an engineer.

Took band for one year with a clarinet and decided that was not my thing.

My parents bought a brand new piano for me (their idea) when I was 7 years old. I had about 4 years of lessons, then my dad contracted TB and was put in a sanitarium; mom soon followed, and money for lessons dried up. I kept that piano, even through cross-country moves as an adult. But my playing time got less and less frequent. If I have one regret in life, it is that I did not keep up with my music. When we moved to Oregon three years ago I donated the piano to a charity that provides pianos for families whose children have shown talent and who can't afford a piano. My piano was more than 60 years old at that point and still looked brand new. It wasn't "tinny" either. I'm hopeful perhaps someone else will be able to use it to better advantage than I did.

My folks also pushed me to play violin in elementary school to be in the school orchestra. I hated it and was not good at it. When the TB hit the family (see above) I quit playing it altogether. I toted that violin around for years too. When we got ready to move to Oregon I found a co-worker with 4 kids who needed one and gave it to her.

Carol
