Dave, it's not your vision. Just couldn't make it big enough on SP page. I know what you mean. When I read the list I knew I wouldn't have stood a chance of remaining outside the walls.

Sandy, my defective vision dictated increasing the text of your post to a point where it was pixelated beyond legibility, so I went hunting for a bigger copy. Here is what I found. It's truly frightening and sad, but also hilarious when I consider how lucky I am to have escaped that fate. It wouldn't have taken but ten or so items on that list to keep me in there for life. Darlene, her "disappearance" occurred before my sister and I were born and we didn't learn the truth till we were in our sixties. I know what you mean about lumping people together. Pennsylvania has been more considerate about their naming of institutions. My DW works here:

As you can see, it has housed everything from the physically ill, mentally ill, criminally insane, troubled youth, TB patients and to its present form of what is basically a state-run nursing home.

My own maternal great grandmother died in a mental hospital. Gave birth there, as well. And that baby is one my mother spent years searching for.

My husband's grandma died in the same mental hospital. She had a tumor on the brain or something, but died just days or weeks after arriving from heart failure. I wondered if she absolutely freaked out that she was put there and gave herself a heart attack.
Hubby's mom was only 15 when her mom died there. I guess she was getting pretty mean. My mum in law thinks she began losing it when her son died at age 9 or 10 from pneumonia way back in the 1930's. Poor woman.

And we all lived happily ever after...

Dave, back in years past asylums were where they put anyone from mentally ill, to TB, to women they just wanted to get rid of. So even if that was where he died it might have been something that had nothing to do with a mental problem. I did notice you found out it wasn't, though.

My great grandmother was married 3 times that we know of.
The first husband, we have a wedding photo of. (I'm trying to remember if we know his name.)
The second husband, is the FATHER of the first five children. We have ZERO pictures of him. Well, no wedding pics. There is one pic of my grandma and a man, on a farm, and we are not sure who that is.) We know HIS name, of course.

The 3rd husband married G.Grandma 'for the kids' sake'. and he had one child with her.
We found a note by him that explained that he only married her for the kids and that she was really mean. lol

But we all wish we had a photo of our real great grandpa.

And we all lived happily ever after...

Oh! This reminds me of my step-dad's family. Supposedly some guy in his line had two separate families! I guess they didn't know about each other until someone started doing their genealogy! LOL

That reminds me: I have developed a contact with a DNA match in the same branch of the family. She recently learned that the step-father she was raised with was the guy her mother had been having an affair with while married to someone else. The family story was that he had died but it turned out he divorced her and moved to Australia. Apparently the "died" excuse is a family tradition. When she figured it out she had to undo and redo that whole part of her family tree!

We're at a great disadvantage as compared to our ancestors. Many of their transgressions are buried in the sands of time. Anything we do wrong will as likely as not end up a movie on youtube or at least in a never again to be updated article or a record search that's just made up. You can run, but you can't hide! Makes me wonder where we'll find our politicians of the future?

emoticon

PS - Family lore had it that my Grandmother died in an asylum, as she disappeared many years ago. The truth was more mundane. She ran off with a salesman, but that was too shameful, so the asylum story came to be.

Sometimes it's not even our doing foolish things. My current extended family members are being startled when I show up in their records, as I was the out of wedlock child and my own presence has to be explained. My mother's mother told all the family members (who asked) that I had died just after birth because she was so ashamed of her daughter's illicit behavior.

That's an interesting thought. We would do well to consider that before doing foolish things!

Way back when we did all our research at the library, and all info was written on paper. There was a group of us that knew each other and if we stumbled across something for someone else let them know. All except one guy. He was a minister that preached the sins of the father were handed down 7 generations. He was on a quest to prove that for 7 generations his grandfathers had been minister. Non of us wanted anything to do with him. Till one day it sounded like one of the stacks, big floor to ceiling bookshelves, fell on him. Well we found him out cold on the floor with books all over the place. but the stack itself hadn't failed. He had gotten back to the French revolution. His Grand daddy was the executioner. The next day one of the girls found that her uncles was Billy The Kid. And was doing the happy dance in the middle of the library. I decided no matter what I found I was going to be like her and not the preacher, who we never saw again.

Objects in the mirror will get thinner than they now appear

If it can be proven, I include it. If not, I make a note of it to research further.

I found copies of documents and letters about a dispute between one of my ancestors from the 1700's. From what I read he seemed to be a not very nice person. There was also reference in a letter about how he treated his family badly.

I have only found surprises like an uncle born less than the 9 months after marriage. I haven't found bad about any ancestors, but probably wouldn't change anything that I put down. That is only the two lines I can find. I have seen noted someone was murdered in Missouri (that in the books written about the family) and that one sued someone, but I haven't seen the proof of either. The lawsuit was noted somewhere, but I can't find any court records on it. I haven't looked up the murder.

I found out my grandfathers deep dark secret which cleared up some mysteries for me and uncovered possible additional relatives. I wish my mom had been alive to know. I also uncovered that one of my son's uncles (not related to me) was, as I suspected born out of wedlock. No big deal as far as we are concerned.

I have not had that happen. If I were to uncover something unpleasant or just unexpected (e.g., an out of wedlock birth) I would try to verify it. And if it turned out to be true I would simply incorporate it as part of my records. History is what it is, whether I like it or not. If it turns out to be a false lead or untrue I would still document it for my records since the question might arise later and I might forget by then without notes.
