One of his bosses, long ago, when we were newlyweds, threatened to make my husband work the midnight shift, and then the BOSS, said he was going to come over and visit ME!
In other words, threatening rape.

It didn't take long for Hubby to have him up against the wall, with his grip ripping through his boss's clothes.

This boss was known to have extra-marital affairs with his secretaries.

Creep.

And we all lived happily ever after...

I would have been soooo scared! I was followed by a man when I was a mid-teen. The police say he had been following many girls from our Junior High school. They knew WHO he was, and WHERE he lived, but the guy never went further than following and looking, so, at that time, with those old laws, there wasn't really anything they could do.
I would write out the story, but I just shared it with someone else, and don't feel like writing it again!
In the end, the police gave my dad enough info, just in case Dad wanted to take care of it himself. I thought it ended there, but I found out years later that he had kept a baseball bat in the trunk of his car for years, ready to 'meet the guy'.

Learning that, made me feel very special, loved, and protected. :)

And we all lived happily ever after...

Susan, I'm sorry to hear your son was stopped by the police, but so happy to hear it was a good experience. The incident reminded me of when my ds and I first moved to our new town and I had to go to t he DMV. They had security and my son stops short. What's the matter?
I have to go back to the car.
why?
I forgot to leave something there.
Oh brother, okay, here are the car keys, hurry.
The elderly man at security asked what the matter was and I told him he had to take his pocket knife to the car. He tells me call him back it's fine.
So we go through security like it's TSA and the man looks at all the knives my son put in the plastic bucket and asks, "what are you afraid of son?"
My son looks at him, smiles, and responds, absolutely nothing.
ROFL. Of course not. He walks around with an arsenal all over his body. He even had something hiding in his military boots.

boys. emoticon

For some reason this popped in my head; when I was 6 walking home alone from school, (all my friends took the shortcut through the canyon) and a car stopped and a guy yelled at me to get in the car. He opened the car door and yelled at me. I ran ahead to try and get away.

The man closed the door and sped off. But only to pull over to the side of the road, get out on the side walk with the car door open and yelled at me to get in. Luckily I was far enough away that he couldn't grab me. And his yelling scared me and I ran back in the direction I had come and stopped at a busy gas station.

I do not know how long I stood there crying and wondering what to do. Some girl walking past with her mom said something as they past and the mom came back to talk to me. I couldn't talk, but when she asked if I wanted to walk with them I nodded. I walked behind them most of the way, but then I was able to talk to her before we reached where we had to part ways. I was so scared. (there was also a creepy house with mean men that would punch wood in their front yard and yell if you stared). Yeah, nice neighborhood, huh?

But then I recognized my step dad's van in the parking lot of the convenient store on the corner and when he saw me he started yelling at me for being late getting home. I hid behind the lady. She told him what happened and then his demeanor changed.

Come to find out my parents said they didn't want me to walk in the canyon for snakes, but the real reason was kidnapping. Well that backfired. it wasn't even safe to walk on the streets.

Home-schooling helps in soooo many ways! And keeping access to their where-abouts is a big positive to me.

About the knives. Here's a rather funny story.
My kids love their pocket knives.
One day last year my 20 year old son was walking home from the gas-station where he had bought a drink.
A police car pulled up to him and two cops got out and questioned him, saying the gas station cashier thought he might have stolen something.
My son respectfully let them look, but not before saying, as he pointed to several parts of his body,
"I have a knife here, and another there, and another one back there, and...."

lol

The cops just smiled and shook their heads.

After thanking my son for cooperating they went off in search of another customer that my son had described who, he considered, to be walking around the store in a suspicious manner.

I'm from Cali, my family and I brought our "don't trust anyone and lock every door" habits to the country. (when we lived in a gated community people who had all their lights on, but their doors unlocked were robbed, even the ones with dogs. On the other hand, those of us that turn our lights out but lock the doors weren't robbed.
That being said, if I noticed some girl with a guy whom I thought was being kidnapped, we would call the cops and most likely follow; get pictures of the guy(s), the girl, the car plates, etc.
When I was a teen my parents started a non profit organization for runaway teens. We are aware not all of t hem are runaways.
I do know that not too many years ago there was something in the news about human trafficking in one of our major cities. There is a taskforce in that city.
Being from Cali, I also don't let my son, (I'm so grateful he's not a girl), but he's not allowed down the street without the dogs or myself. He ALWAYS has his knife on him too, so if someone tried to take him, they'd get a surprise. He's been trained in self defense, just as all my kids have been; as all kids should be.
Here in the country, more boys do carry knives (and if on farms some carry firearms), and know more people in town, so are less likely to be kidnapped. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, it's just less likely. The kids being taken are also more likely to be from unstable, broken, poor homes as well. I'm very vigilant about the whereabouts of my kid. The fact that we homeschool also limits his vulnerability.
What irks me are the girls you see fighting with a male on the street and you stop to help and they turn on you as if you're the bad one. sigh.

I am very aware of it. St.Louis is a major problem because of all the major highways going through here. It is a very scary thing & please don't think you are insulated from it because you live in small towns or rural areas. The predators like those places to snatch girls because the residents are so complacent. Many girls & boys who are assumed to be runaways are actually victims of the predators & are sold into the sex traffic trade. The average age of the child in sex slave trafficking rings is 14. Does that scare you? Good! It should. Educate yourselves.

We have a couple of shelter houses in the area for the girls who are rescued from the trade.

I am aware but I'm sheltered from it or the like. That doesn't mean I won't run into a situation to witness it and if I did I'm not sure what I would do. Probably depends on the situation and most likely I'd get official help.

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

I am aware. Having raised a daughter and a granddaughter it has been on my radar for a long time. The issue is as old as time. I don't have answers to solving the problem except to always keep our eyes and ears open and teach the next generations as they come along.

Yes and yes. I think I'd be more likely to see it in Cali though than where I live now; out in the country.

I am aware. A few months ago several people we arrested in a city near us for human trafficking. Several women and girls were being used for prostitution against their wills.

I am aware of human trafficking, have read all the things to look for and places you are most likely to see it, but not sure I would recognize it if I saw it.

Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. This is a serious problem here in the United States, as well as worldwide. Are you familiar with human trafficking & the signs of it? If not, please learn. You may save a life.

National Human Trafficking Awareness Day is observed annually on January 11.

Beginning in 2010, by Presidential Proclamation, each January has been designated National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Following the start of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, with the help of non-government organizations, National Human Trafficking Day began and is observed annually on January 11.
