The year Hubby and I were to marry, was the 1991, when The Gulf War took place. I was kinda worried my fiance would be expected to go, but he wouldn't have passed the physical at that time since he had hurt his back two years prior. But boy! It sure unsettles you!

And we all lived happily ever after...

We always have an American flag flying year around.

My brother was in the Marines in the late 50's but I'm pretty sure no active duty.

My father didn't pass the health test because of a toe problem, which wasn't really a problem but it was a time when they had enough service men. He often spoke about how much he wanted to join but was refused. So was my DH who didn't pass the eye test for the Air Force because he is colorblind. Later on during the Korean war he was called up, but we were married and I was pregnant so he didn't serve.

We have relatives in our tree who served who we never knew. I have a couple of diaries that I must work on to to transcribe. They are in English, but small hard to read script. Also, have a file of letters from them.

Jackie I'm a Halloween baby but many years ago.

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of March 2017. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2017 to be back to below 155.

We do not have any traditions. Like many others on here, my family is full of veterans and some still active service. Brothers, uncles, cousins, grandfathers, gr. grandfathers and at least one 2nd great grandfather, as well as my son and daughter in law.

I appreciate each and every one of them for their service, as well as for the honorable soldiers of whom I do not know.

We don't do anything to 'celebrate', but to show my support I put my large flag out, plus display several little ones in various ways each year.

Btw, because I have a large family and we are given flags to hold at the Memorial Day parade, we have collected MANY over the years.
A couple of years ago I was inspired to make a small flag holder.

I had a small tree stump (just about a foot in diameter or so) and took a lonnng drill bit and made about 20 holes in it. Then I painted a patriotic quote on the front and inserted all of our extra flags. It turned out real nice.

I also put some in large flower pots and sit them on either side of my front porch steps.

And we all lived happily ever after...

The only ones I know of are my Dad and his brothers. Dad and his older brother were in aircraft defense here in the states. Not sure what all they did, but Dad was a sharpshooter and had something to do with if they had to swim out into the ocean (he and another man swam out to retrieve something in the Gulf of Mexico, but it was an exercise). His younger brother served in Europe and was a POW in Germany. They were forced to stand at attention for entire days.

My great grandfather on Mom's side MIGHT have served in the Civil War, but I can't tell if it was him or another Henry Pfeifer. Everyone where he lived seems to have had the same name.

Let's see.
My paternal grandfather was sent over to Hawaii AFTER it was attacked.
Since Dad died, I am now in possession of photos that Grandpa or his buddies took while over there.

And two cousins on that side of the family. One serving in Desert Storm as a scout.

On my maternal side I have 6 uncles that served and 4 cousins.

On my hubby's side 3 uncles (brothers) served in WW2, Army, Navy, Marines and another uncle on the other side.
Also on that side, we discovered that my mum-in-law's grandfather (great?) that served in the Civil War. Mum did not know that, so it was cool to discover that for her.

Currently, my oldest son serves in the Marines. He is serving in Georgia right now, but surprised us TODAY with a weekend visit, as he attends the Marine Corp Ball tonight.
Happy Us!

And we all lived happily ever after...

I have someone from both sides of my family in every war the US has been in. But the ones I remember are my father and Father in law, both in WWII. Neither saw action and neither wanted to collect VA benefits because they weren't real Vets. Daddy maned a radio on a ship the "just" patrolled and called info in. Floyd fixed radios at a base in TX.

Objects in the mirror will get thinner than they now appear

My family is full of veterans. I had one cousin who was killed in Korea, another who died of the results from being a POW in the Pacific after he got back. My great-grandfather fought in the Civil War. My first husband was in the Air Force the first 8 years we were married, including an ugly stint in Vietnam. My present husband was in the Army in Korea just after the worst of the shooting started but while some of it was still going on; he actually had his tonsils pulled at the hospital they used as the model for the M*A*S*H series. At our last house we always hung out the flag, but here in Oregon we have never gotten a holder set up. No other traditions here.
