I tried it once, but it just made my sleep worse. I found out later that melatonin is not a good mix with bipolar. Wish I'd have known that earlier.

i have had the same bottle that i bought 2 years ago. my sleep problem tends to be that i dont sleep long enough or that i get hyper on sunday nights before bed. otherwise my issue tends to be lifestyle not chemical/medicinal

My oldest daughter takes 10mg per night and it works at least half the time. She gets really bad insomnia and I don't want to put her on sleeping pills.

I have 10 mg of Melatonin from a pharmacy, 5 mg is released instantly, remaining 5 mg is time released to keep you asleep. It works well but need to start taking it at the same time nightly to regulate my body. After I regulate schedule I will try it again along with nightly chamomile tea.

I have pleurisy, 2 types of anemia, macrocytic anemia, Iron deficiency anemia, from blood transfusions with wrong antibodies, causes blood to replace daily instead of 100 days, chronic pneumonia, pleurisy, chronic kidney disease, a partially collapsed lung, low blood pressure & blood clots in both lungs for 3 years. Now formed scar tissue.I am 56 years old. I had cervical cancer 6 years ago, no signs last 4 years as well. I have new blood clots now,2019.I am on P.S.T. time zone.

I was taking it for several years, but then I noticed that I'd be up at 3am for no good reason. It was often difficult to get back to sleep. At first I thought it was because I was getting older, but I stopped the melatonin and the night waking stopped too.

Weird. It worked fine for quite a while and then it just... didn't.

I take melatonin - 1 or 2 mgs. - and I find that if I don't take it all the time, it actually works better. So some nights I take melatonin and some nights L-tryptophan. And some nights I just stay up because I can't sleep.

Shiaakuma, might I ask, what dosage is he on? I have decided to give them a go again. I am wondering if my GP has prescribed too low a dosage for me.

Edited to add, I tried 2 mg at 21.00, and managed to fall asleep 24.00, but woke very early. O4.00. Luckily I managed to fall asleep again, but I really felt very oddly awake when I woke the first time (usually I can't even properly recall my night-time awakenings). Maybe I should take them later in the evening..

Melatonin is a wonderful thing, honestly. It was recommended for my autistic stepson because he can't "wind down" properly at the end of the day, and it's worked wonders for him. We also take it ourselves on sleepless nights and it seems to really do the job, without any daytime drowsiness in the morning.

I have taken melatonin in the past, maybe I should give it another try? It did nothing for me then, but at that time I was very stressed. I makes more sense to give it another shot now. The sun hardly gives us a break during summer, and I can't seem to sleep well when it is so bright outside.

Learn211; seriously, you have been advised to stop eating 3 hours before bedtime? I would be ravenous, and the sheer hunger would keep me from sleeping.. The rest of the advice seemed very sensible!

My daughter's neurologist prescribed it to help her sleep. She takes 5 tablets 3 hours before bedtime each night. It works, but it seems like it took a couple of times of taking it before there was a noticeable change. Her neurologist also made the same recommendations that are here on Spark People (i.e. stop using the computer 3 hours before bedtime, stop eating 3 hours before sleeping, exercise daily, and shower before sleeping if it promotes relaxation). I do some of these things myself, but I found taking Valerian Root the most helpful. Since stopping meals before bed and exercising, I have had no need for the supplements.

I use it. My doctor said to use it, now remember there are different doses, 3, 5, 10, and 20mg. I use the 10.

I've been taking it lately and it really helps me a lot. I have a very hard time falling asleep and the melatonin helps to turn my brain off so I can get to sleep!

For years I have been waking up, wide awake, raring to go at 2,3,4 am. Boy, do I hate that. My mind is racing and my body is exhausted. I just started taking melatonin and it works! I get sleepy faster and sleep more soundly. However, my ears have started ringing. I went to the doctor. Nothing wrong, except I took Nyquil a few times with the melatonin. Nyquil can make your ears ring. It comes and goes. Hope it goes away permanently. I need to go to bed at 10 every night because I always wake up at 6. Otherwise I have to nap during the day. I would rather be energized all day.
