I sleep with the TV on and this is a habit I would really like to break. I have tinnitus and with the TV off, the tinnitus just seems SO loud that I can't sleep and I end up turning the TV back on. I am now using the timer to turn TV off after 30 min., but I never sleep thru the night so usually end up with TV back on at 2-3 a.m. to fall asleep again.

No lights, I like it dark, but light does stream into the window from outside. If I'm tired it doesn't matter if there is sun coming in, I will sleep. I think when you have pets you learn to sleep no matter what is walking all over you or licking your face LOL

I like everything off and the room cool. There is such a delicious feeling snuggling down into a bed that's warm and the air is cool. I have even been known to put something in front of those horrid blue lights on the DVD player. When I can't sleep, they seem like lasers aimed at my eyes LOL.

I can do both. 95% of the time I sleep with everything off, but once in a while I'll fall asleep with lights on or my husband next to me doing computer work and I always seem to wake up feeling extra rested.... bizarre.

Why? I am finding everything I do tiresome and very difficult. I am trying to continue and get somewhere with my fight for a better life. My health has been going down in the last 5 years. I am 73 and recently I am experiencing quite a bit of pain with this injury of a sciatic nerve. Of course that has nothing to do with my continued to eat things are not beneficial for me. When I go to bed it is lights and TV off. But sometimes when I wake in the middle of the night I can only get back to sleep with the lights on. I have to trick my brain. Sometimes I can wake in the middle of the night and go back to sleep, other times I find myself getting more and more aggravated. When that happens I turn on the light and tell myself that I am not going to try to fall asleep, but I am going to rest.
I turn on the light, roll on my side away from it, and close my eyes focusing on deep breathing to relax. I usually wake in the morning having fallen asleep.

goal is to be able to walk again

Sounds like a great plan. Read a little. Lights out. Good night. Now I just have to be determined to get myself to the first step EARLIER and it will be a done deal! Thanks for repeating what I know I should be doing and will be doing with more consistency as long as I stick with the program! I got almost 7 hours last night so I'm doing better! Have a good day and a restful night all.

Off, Off, for many years I used the timer on the TV so when I fell asleep I didn't have to worry about the TV being on all night, now I have no TV in bedroom, read for about 10 minutes till the eyes start to close, turn off lights and just slumber off to nitty nite, I also take a melatonin before laying down.

I am aiming for 8 hrs because all I read that is the goal we should aim for to be successful with life , diet, health, so why not?

If the lights bothered me to that extent I would cover them with a blackout cloth backed with fireproof tape. I turn some lights away from my line of vision if I feel bothered by them. At the same time I feel comforted by the nightlight we use to guide our way to the bathroom. I know it is supposed to be dark, but I feel it is better to have a small light which might prevent disorientation in the night that could lead to a fall. I do clear the pathway if something has moved out of position during the day. One could wear eye patches, and that would certainly block the light.

Before this challenge I was a TV person @ bedtime and during the night I would hear the television on and it would disrupt my sleep but I was too lazy to look for the remote to cut it off.

I prefer to have the lights and tv off when I go to bed, however my boyfriend needs the tv on to fall asleep. I am hoping that going to the bedroom earlier will get the tv off earlier!

Our TV is normally on, though it does have a dimmer at night. However, I don't know if there is a timer or not. I know that is probably the opposite of how some people function, but I can't go to sleep when it is pitch dark and nothing is going on. My mind starts thinking about all the things I did that day, what I have to do tomorrow, the rest of the week, and so on.

A funny little tidbit of information though: My husband has made me watch Star Trek so many times that I keep it, or Adult Swim, on when I go to bed. In most cases, the voices of Star Trek are actually somewhat soothing and generally monotone. In cases like Adult Swim, I'm so used to the voices and have probably seen most of the episodes, so I don't really feel a need to stay up and watch what is going on.

Since my husband and I rarely go to bed at the same time, it drowns out the noise of the living room tv.

My bedroom is a cave. I have a fan on for white noise. I have black sheets over blinds to block out every bit of light that I can. I have to have my clock facing the wall or I will be up all night watching it. I also like lots of blankets but the room has to be cool.

I keep all lights off and I don't have a tv in my bedroom. Outside lights still come in thru the window, so I sleep with a mask on.

you will all think this is sooo funny. I leave the lamp on I never sleep in the pitch dark or cant fall asleep in it. I have to have noise..so usually the tv on sleep timer or ipod...on timer or not...then I have to have a sleeping mask over my eyes...so lights on/ mask on LOL the mask is for the daybreak hours that usually wake me with the light from the windows..i dont know why the lamp is on lazy i guess...this would be a habit that i would like to change just for the saving energy fact.

And in the end you'll see.YOU WONT STOP ME!

Trying to break the TV on habit. I know it is very disruptive for good sleep, but it works...

I prefer lights out, no tv. My partner likes the tv on. Drives me crazy! I would like it if we didn't even have a tv, much less in the bedroom! But what are ya gonna do? Most nights she turns it off, but when she is having trouble she sets the timer. Once the timer turns the tv off I can finally go to sleep.

my husband stays up later than I do so I fall asleep with his light on but I put my paw around my snout to block it. When he turns off his light we still have illuminated clocks on both nightstands. I'm a little bit afraid of the dark so I don't think pitch black would work for me.

No lights or tv for me. I live in the central part of a large city and I have skylights - there's plenty of ambient light coming in which is fine. Now the neighbor's dog....well I could do without the late night barking!

I like it totally dark (at most a clock or the moon if i'm lucky emoticon ) but I need some kind of sound to listen to. I have a white noise radio with rain, waterfall etc... but it also comes with crickets (summer night) and I really like that one. It makes me remember my childhood and it's relaxing... and kind of drowns out my fiancé's snoring emoticon

I can't sleep without the tv on. I can't shut my brain off and end up getting up to do a million things during the night. However, I watch certain DVDs that I've seen lots of times before so I don't feel the need to watch the end and I choose ones that have an even volume throughout. I don't like the light on though but after spending so much time in backpacker hostels I've got quite good at sleeping with lights on.

A little of both.

In the bedroom there are no lights (except the moon) and no tv. Takes ages to fall asleep. Can't seem to turn off the brain. Relaxation techniques don't work.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTT if I am on the couch watching tv, the second I stretch out I fall asleep. Will be out for hours like that. Doesn't matter how bright the lights are or the tv volume. Guess the mind numbing shows are just that... mind numbing.

Drives me nuts!

My hubby likes the tv on to fall asleep, but I hate light. I keep everything turned off and even put my digital clock face down.

TV and lights both off! I refuse to have a TV in the bedroom at all, that's not what that room is for! Hubby and I used to have this argument all the time, he doesn't bother fighting me on it anymore. I think he secretly knows I'm right and just won't tell me so. emoticon

No lights or tv, those distract me from sleep. The only time I leave lights on is if I'm in motel/hotel, that way if I wake up and have to use the bathroom, I don't kill myself getting there.

No lights or tv. I fall asleep pretty easily. I can't stay asleep. I sleep sound for the 1-1/2 to 2 hours and then I wake up every 45minutes to an hour. Needless to say when I have to get up and go to work I am exhausted.
