Years ago I had hip replacement and my husband wouldn't leave the house until I could get in and out of bed by myself.
He could not cook though. Church helped with that.
One time I told him he either had to cook or we would go without as I was too sick to cook.
Well he tried. I had just had gall bladder surgery and guess what he gave me? Weiners with chili. He must have diluted the chili as it was really runny. I called the church in.
My husband was wonderful also but now is buried in the VA cemetery.
I am getting my bills paid up through the year and doing all I can before surgery.

Irene, I'm blessed with a wonderful husband who took special care of me after the first TKR in June - plus he's a good cook! I'm trying to get all the laundry, etc done before next weekend so that will be out of the way. Also need to haul more yarn out of the basement so I'll have something to do while I'm semi-immobile. It took me about 7 weeks last time before I was willing to go up & down the basement stairs.

They're doing my right knee on October 8th - that means that I'll get out on October 11th just before I turn 70 the next day. Doubt that I'll kick & yell like I did going into 40 because it would hurt and after this long, I'm just grateful to see another b-day!

Since so many have asked if I have a date for surgery yet I realize we just can't read everyone blogs and statuses. I commented on both of them.
So I am sending this to all of the teams I belong to.
They told me this week I have October the 18th for surgery. I said Oh, that is close to my birthday and that is a nice birthday present. She said oh, I'll try to get you in before.
I said since I was supposed to have the surgery in August it would be almost two months later in October and also told her I was hobbling.
I am hoping I get in earlier. I am trying to get everything paid and caught up till the end of the year and friends will help me with different things.
A friend from one of the teams speaks of the happy dance, so I am doing a happy dance.

Thank you who asked.
Thank you who read the blog and commented.

Welcome! It sounds like you are well prepared for the surgery. All of that exercise will help you tremendously with recovery. I have a Stryker knee (the Get Around one). It was pretty funny- I had to sign a paper allowing the salesman to be in the OR- they have one there with all the parts just in case the one the doctor picked didn't fit for some reason. I had mine done three months ago, and so far I'm very happy with it.
You will find a thread on here with exercises and post surgery therapy. Lots of good ideas on what to expect, as well as helpful items to have after your surgery.

Good Morning Sparkers,

I am having a TKR on my Left Knee on November 11th. I am starting my prepping for the event. I have been riding, walking, swimming, and exercising for years now so I hope that the movement will help with rehab. Does anyone know what knee was used for the replacement? I have been doing some research on them and would like some feedback. Any advice for the aftercare after the hospital? Planning on 3 days in the hospital and then either home or rehab center.

Karen gave you good advice about the pre-surgery exercises. Other members could attest to that as well. I had more exercise before my 1st TKR and progressed faster than I did with the 2nd one. (when I hadn't done as many pre-surgery exercises) Keep us posted...

Honouria, good for you! Yes, it is painful at first, but managed with medication. And you will feel so much better after it's done. I'm 8 weeks out from my first TKR, and will not worry so much when it comes time to do the other one. Definitely start doing the exercises. You will be surprised at how weak your muscles are after surgery. Building them up ahead of time helps.

I got a phone call two days ago out of the blue, as it has been a year and a half since they said they'd get back to me. They had a cancellation, and since it was unexpected, I declined, but that means now that I will be called in 3 months. So...now it looks like I need to start doing those knee exercises. 3 months means October. I've never had one of these - it is my first. I have heard harrowing stories about the pain, but that it is well worthe it.

Welcome to the team, Greatgranny! I had a left TKR on May 28th, so I'm almost 5 weeks out. I was very apprehensive too, but I'm so glad I did it! I'm still on the road to recovery, but the pain and discomfort is getting better instead of worse. This team is an awesome place to ask questions and get support.

Have you had a replacement done yet? I had my left knee done March the 8th and it does get better. Now I am preparing for my right knee. Don't know when yet but see the doctor and anesthesiologist the 14th of July and will probably know then.

Boy can I relate to the calf pain! I think mine is because I avoided putting any weight on my bad leg for so long, the muscles are really weak. Now that I'm putting weight on it and doing exercises, the muscles are protesting. It sure doesn't feel good. I'm sorry you're having problems with both legs.

I had no pain in my operated leg for a long time, now both knees hurt and my calves are bawling. My PT told me my hip which I had done 16 years ago is weak and I see how it is also. I don't think I want to have two more surgeries.
The PT said to keep doing the exercises and walk to strengthen myself. Just to be careful I don't fall.

LOL,,,, yeah the staples sure aren't pretty but they do their job. Ice is good as well....and I do believe foot swelling has been mentioned by others several times....so very normal but you are being pro-active by elevating, icing, and walking!!

I'm five days out from surgery. :) The biggest problem I've noticed today is swelling in my foot. I've been doing lots of ankle pumps, trying to keep my foot elevated, and making sure I get up and walk around every so often to encourage circulation. Any other suggestions? My PT took the dressing off yesterday. He said it would heal better if it wasn't covered. It looks good (well it actually looks disgusting, but looks like it's healing well lol).

Well it will soon be three months since I had my TKR. June 8th is the day.

I was in the hospital 3 days then went to rehab for a month. I had the machine which brought my bend to 100 and also PT which brought it to 110. I had therapy for the upper part of my body as well as the lower.

When I came home I had PT at home 3 days a week for a month.

Now they have added 2 days a week for a month. The bend is so important. I need a TKR for the other knee when this one gets strong enough. It is getting stronger day by day. I walk w/o the walker most of the time but do tire I think because of the limp in the other leg. I do not trust a cane as I feel unstable with it.

It's supposed to be in addition to physical therapy. I think it's to improve flexibility. She said the first day they set it for a 70% bend, and that as it gets easier, I can turn it up. Sounds like lots of fun. I am supposed to have PT come to my house for a few weeks- I'm glad I don't have to worry about anyone giving me a ride. I'm usually the one taking other people places.
I've had PT a couple of times on my shoulder- once after shoulder surgery and once after I dislocated a shoulder and had it immobolized for 6 weeks. That one rates tops for pain. So not looking forward to it, but looking forward to the end result!

Yeah it was a quick turn around but that's the way the dr and insurance plan it and for us it wasn't a problem! I didn't know that everyone didn't do it that way til I joined this team!! :))

Different dr. have different thoughts about the machine (I always forget the name for it) I didn't have it b/c my dr. expected me to do my PT there AND at home....and I did my best! But my FIL did have it so -- I guess it all depends on who you see. I would suggest not let it being your only source of exercise....b/c that' so important. I cried almost every session after my 1st TKR (poor guy!!) but he was ok with it and actually it has done better than the one that I had done 2 years ago. So there was a method to his madness!!

Wow, that is fast! I'm not sure I'd want to go home after 24 hours. They are going to send PT to my house, so at least I don't have to worry about getting there. I also found out today that my dr. likes that motion machine. The OT said I'd use it three times a day for an hour at a time, and that they would have someone bring one out to my house to set one up. Not too thrilled about that lol.

Hi Karen -- my hospital stay was 24 hours! Then I went home. I did have my dh here so that was helpful. My house is fairly user friendly as well --- one story, no steps but it did have carpet. I used mywalker for the first few weeks and then graduated to the cane fairly quickly. All my PT was at their office so for the 1st 2 weeks when I couldn't drive (til staples were out) he or a friend drove me....after that I drove myself. It was helpful at PT when I left they would offer me an icepack for as I drove home and for when I got home. If you've read any of the other threads -- I found it to be helpful to take my pain pill an hour b/f (if you KNOW you're not going to be affected by drowsiness it may cause in some people) By the time I got to therapy the pill had taken affect and I could get through most of the exercises with minimal pain (but yeah there were still tears sometimes) Then I took another after that one wore off -- about 4-6 hours later...it worked for me anyway!!

My left knee TKR is scheduled for May 28th. Yikes- it's coming up fast! My surgeon said to plan on a three day hospital stay. I'm not planning on going to rehab. My house is pretty user friendly- hardwood floors, no stairs or steps, room for a wheelchair to get around (Mike is in a wheelchair), so I'm hoping I'll do okay at home. It sounds like a lot of people go to rehab. I'd love to hear from people who went home without rehab. I am planning on having in home therapy.

Had my knee replaced 2 years ago this week, and it's doing great. My hip was replaced 6 months later, and that progress has been slower. But, I will get there! The 55 pounds lost definitely helps! emoticon

Had both hips replaced in the same week. Right hip was 2/11/13 and left hip was 2/13/13. I had the minimally invasive Anterior procedure. I spent 5 days in an inpatient rehab hospital and was discharged home. I live alone but I was able to take care of myself with hardly any help. The only thing I required was a pet care person to clean the litter box, walk the dog and take the garbage out for me. I was walking with a cane after 3 weeks. I gave the cane up after 1 month. Having both done at once was a very good choice for me. I'm almost 100%.

I took comfortable clothes for rehab and tennis shoes with the stretch shoe laces so y ou can just slip into them with the help of a long shoe horn.
I had surgery on March 5th, spent 3 nights in the hospital and went to inpatient rehab for 8 days. I came home on the 16th. I had the staples removed on the 18th / emoticon I can finally sit at my computer with out pain.
It was nice being waited on and having people take care of me. Now I have to get back to the business of losing weight. I have to get brave and weigh my self. I'm doing good and I still have several weeks of out patient P/T.

I'm glad it's over with.

Everyday is a new beginning.

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!

In rehab I could wear my own clothes and PJs. Be sure to take a comfortable pair of sneakers. You really do not need to buy "work out" clothes, just make sure you have comfortable pants and tops that you can move in. For the first few days, I wore the slip proof footies to PT because I was not able to put my socks and sneakers on! Of course, take you personal hygiene items and a bathrobe. Best of luck!

I had my RTKR on Jan 29, 2013. I am still in out-patient PT after 14 days in rehab. There a times when I have had a "melt down" and cried. The process can tap your emotions. But I know I am in a better place healthwise and looking to get the Left Knee done in the near future.

What am I waiting for?

Well, the 8th of March is to be my surgery date. I go in the 7th to register and then they will tell me what time to be there for surgery. They plan to have me in the hospital 3 days, then in rehab 2 to 3 weeks.

Mine is scheduled for the ninth yet and with those two workers I had today helping me get everything out of boxes and back in shape I think I just might make it. I have not rescheduled yet. That is very soon. Hope you read my blogs as it gives updates as I don't have time to write much.
