Snowed in! Ha ha! Gotta love snow in the south. We have about 3 inches of snow and then we got freezing rain this morning. We're not equipped to deal with it, so yesterday everything was announcing it would be closed today, including my school and the kids' school. The Governor even declared a state of emergency before the snow even started falling. Gotta love it. The downside to this is that when you work from home, you don't get snow days :( But, no class for me tonight, so I'll take it! emoticon

I'll be sure to check out the bootcamp team. :) I am not focusing on exercising this week, however, starting next week I will. I am having one of those crazy weeks where I will lose around 10lbs in the week. Which is cool. I'm not going to stress out about it. So long as the scale consistently moves down is all I care about. So how is everyone else?

Hmm, I'm not getting notifications when people are replying to posts anymore. Anyway, glad I checked in. Tracy, welcome back! Missed you!

I joined the 28-day bootcamp too, and I'm loving it. I'm hoping it'll help me make exercise a priority, even on busy days. So far so good! I've been super busy this week since my classes started again and for the first time, I'm working while in school, but I've gotten my workouts in 5 days in a row! Huge accomplishment for me! I've also maintained my calorie goals. 2011 is off to a great start for me!

Hoping you all are having a good New Year so far!

Hi Tracy! Glad to see you're back. I was gone from this team for quite awhile myself, but have come back too. My New Years goals right now are about the two SP teams I joined....one is called the Officially Healthy Cooking Challenge, and the other is the 28 Day Boot Camp Challenge. Not to let the name scare you (especially of the Boot Camp one)....they aren't about being tough and difficult, but just about making the commitment to do the challenge. So far, so good. The 7-10 minute strength training shows me that I'm using muscles I haven't for awhile, but they are still do-able....and sometimes with modifications, which is okay.

I have been gone for forever. I had a lot of stuff going on with school and I just couldn't maintain my home, my schooling, my son and myself, so I let me go. I shouldn't have let me go, but something had to give. And nothing else was budging. But I'm back. I'm on a priority list this year, so hopefully it'll remain so.

How's everyone been? How was Christmas for everyone? Do you have any goals for the new year?

Oh, yes! I know the feeling of making sure you have food around for teenagers! Mine aren't as happy with me anymore...now that I don't always have homemade cookies & cakes for them all the time. I do make sure there's plenty of food for them, tho. I even make sure there's food for son's GF for all the times she is here:) LOL.

And about tracking food eaten....I've found there's a fine line between enough calories and way too many....sometimes it's just from eating one thing (unfortunately, LOL). I try to stick closely to recording my foods. I admit that during the Christmas holidayS, I had to give myself a few days off. I tried to stick to the right meals & portions, but it got so busy that I ran out of time. Getting back on track here with all of it now, and determined to reach my goal weight which is coming up in February......

That sounds like a great goal! We've got that down here. With three kids (2 of which are adolescent boys), if meals aren't planned, there will be no food in the house! I need to tell them, "don't eat that, it's for dinner tomorrow night". Speaking of, I need to go to the grocery store because we're out of milk and bread. Again. Just bought them on Monday. LOL.

My goal is to start tracking my food again. I think I do a good job of making healthy choices, but I struggle with portion size, and if I don't track, I frequently go over my calories for the day. Explains why I can maintain weight well, but haven't been losing!

Hi there, and thnx for the welcome back! I find that I have good success when I am the most determined. I've just joined a new team that focuses on a healthy cooking challenge. On of the things they mention setting as ones goal for the first week is to plan their meals & making a grocery list. I do this sometimes, but not all the time. SO, that's my goal for this week....to work on planning out my meals instead of just getting whatever I happen upon at the store..... the name of the team is The Official Healthy Cooking Challenge. I thought it sounded like a good idea.

Welcome back! I am nowhere near my goals. I've been on and off the wagon so many times. I've made progress (net loss of 9 lbs.), but have a long way to go. Life and the changes that come with it seem to keep getting in my way, but I know I'm the only one that can make that a non-issue.

I think a challenge might be a good idea. Maybe we could each set individual weekly and/or monthly goals and post them here. We can try holding each other accountable, hopefully providing a little more motivation.

What do you all think?

Hi there! I admit that I was part of this team once, left it, and am now back again. I didn't see any new activity, but I wasn't any better at creating it either....:( I agree. Can we start again? I'm still trying to reach my goal weight....how are you all doing with reaching your goals? I think I've gotten into an okay routine of sorts, but new challenges always help for keeping the motivation going....

Yay, how exciting! I hope she has a smooth flight. There's nothing worse than a lot of turbulence when you're a nervous flyer!

We've finally finished our Christmas shopping (including groceries), so I'm happy about that. Still have wrapping and cooking to do, but the worst is done. On top of the holidays, we're waiting for new babies! My sis-in-law is ready to go any day now with twin boys. If she doesn't go into labor on her own, there's a c-section scheduled for the 29th. So excited to have new little ones in the family!

If we don't connect again before then, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and get a great start to the New Year!

My mother in law is arriving tonight and I'm so happy and excited. She is such a wonderful woman and feel like she's my mom too. The weather is a bit dreadful in Southern California and in the Phoenix, so I'm a bit concerned for her. She's so afraid to fly and any time it' bumpy or out of the normal, she gets more scared. She's 87 years old so this is not insignificant. If my dh were able, we would be going to her, but I'm so glad she's coming to us so we can be together.

How are you doing?

~Zoe

emoticon emoticon back!

Isn't it great that we constantly have opportunities to start again? If only life could be put on hold til we reach our diet/fitness goals. Alas, no such luck! I, too, have a new job. I interviewed about 2 weeks before Thanksgiving, was hired a few days later, signed my contract a couple days before Thanksgiving, and I've already been on a business trip! emoticon What a whirlwind! No complaints though, I like what I'm doing and I'm happy to be employed again. Traveling has definitely taken a toll on my diet and fitness though. Add on to that school and kids. So, yeah, I'm happy to be maintaining right now, and hoping after the holidays things will settle down some.

I'm sorry to hear your husband is having health issues. I hope they get resolved/treated as quickly as possible. Any amount of stress that can be eliminated is helpful.

Well, I'm about to go unwind for the night. I'll do my best to log in more often knowing that one of my SBUDDIES is around emoticon

Hi!!!!!!!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm on day three of eating right but that comes after about three months of not. I'm up on weight but am working on it. Boy, I really feel so much better and less bloated already.

Life has been hectic with my new job (not complaining, I finally have a job although it's still temp right now). Plus my hubby has been having a lot of health issues. You know, stress triggers! Oh and add in the adult kids and their problems, etc.

What have you been up to?

I do, if I get a notification that there's been activity. I've been so busy (travel, new job) that I haven't logged into Spark much. Haven't been tracking things, but must be doing ok since I haven't gained anything. Haven't lost either, but not gaining is a start. How are things going for you?

That was a GREAT pep talk! I know how busy those 8 hours can be. I used to come home from work and just drop. They always say to take time on the weekends to prepare meals that you can reheat during the week and prepare healthy snacks for the week, but I never seemed to have the time or energy to do that either.

My back is a slow work in progress. Every day is a teeny bit better. The chiropractor said that it's not going to be a quick fix, and I have to remember that I've only had 2 treatments so far. It's just frustrating!! emoticon

Hope everyone has a good Thursday!

Oh, now I know what your injury is. :( I hope the chiropractor is helping. I have an area on my back that's been bothering me. I did something weird about 35 years ago and it's in that one spot; so afraid the disk is going to blow some day. Take it easy and feel better.

I've been busy with work. I know it's only 8 hours but it's a high intensity, slavery kind of job and I come home exhausted. Too much take out; have to build up some better habits. I've also been hitting the candy machine in the afternoon which is pure stress talking. I need to get my focus back, slow down, breathe, and choose life.

(Nice pep talk I gave myself LOL! Feel free to use it any time.)

TTFN,
Zoe emoticon

I'm here, I'm here! Been out of commission this week. It's midterm exam time, and I hurt my back last Friday and it's progressively gotten worse and limited my activities more and more. Including sitting. I can't sit for more than 5 minutes before it gets uncomfortable. I'm really looking forward to my first visit with a chiropractor on Monday!

How's it going?

Hi Michelle, I already answered you on your page but again, glad to see you back on here.

Hi Tricia, sorry I haven't been around lately, but no more. Computer works now and I'm back. Yes, I have a job now! In my second week and still trying to get a schedule going; I was so used to being off - sure wish I were just independently wealthy!

And hi to anyone else who checks in here.

Have a great rest of your evening (or morning, M) ~Zoe

Hey everyone!

It took some time but I finally read Zoes message and decided to come back. I was on holiday and after that I was at my boyfriends a lot and we weren't at the computer every day, but I still could have tried if I really wanted to. I'm sure you know what I mean!

I'm afraid to weigh myself because last time I gained 1kg back and that was some time ago... Perhaps I'll weigh in next monday but I'm not sure :/

For now I'll restart logging in all my eaten food.
That went very well for me (well, that is until I stopped, of course). Also, the semester at university starts next week and I decided to do indoor cycling and wing chung (a form of material arts) during the semester with a friend of mine because my university offers (nearly) free courses. I hope I get a spot in the indoor cycling group as the places are limited. But we'll see. =)

Next week is my first day at work and I'm really excited and looking forward to it. I got a job as a student assistant for the botany department. =)

How are you doing? What are your plans for this week?
I'll try to enjoy my last free week ;)

Zoe, at one point in my life, I almost DID end up in Phoenix. I almost took at job at ASU, but had just gotten serious with the man who would become my husband, and didn't want to be that far from him. I've done the bi-coastal thing before and it was NO FUN! I still love Phoenix though. I've never been there during the rains, but I've heard stories.

Congrats on the potential job! Even temporary is better than nothing. A little extra money and some more current job experience for your resume. It's a step in the right direction.

Well, I am pretty much swamped again today, at least til about 7 pm, then I think I actually get some downtime. I think I might go for a walk tonight, it's finally cool enough!

Have a great day!

By all means grab a girlfriend, join a group or just explore on your own. I've been married 33 years and learned that sometimes you just have to do things separate. If you were in Phoenix, I'd go with you. emoticon

Not much new here except the weather (see my blog for pics which don't really capture the intensity at all).

Oh, that's not entirely true! I might have a job starting Monday. Only for 60-90 days, but hey that'll get me through to Christmas season with a bit of money for gifts. I'll keep you posted.

Have a wonderful, wiggly Wednesday! I like to move it, move it! emoticon

I'm here, barely... Just checking in real quick. I'm so incredibly busy this week, my planner looks like a nightmare. I'm just trying to keep up, one task at a time. I'm about to head to the doctor's office now to get some repeat labwork done to check on an abnormal level from 4 weeks ago. Not looking forward to this, I absolutely hate having blood drawn. But, hopefully after this time, I won't need it again for about a year.

Zoe, I love the sound of that museum! I wish my husband was interested in museums, I'm missing the "culture" of museums, or cultural fairs, or going to see plays. He's just not interested. Guess I'm going to have to start doing some of those things on my own!

Yesterday hubby took me to the Heard Museum which is a museum of Native American artwork. I love going to museums and we just never seem to get around to it. So he bought a membership. Now it's free each time we go so no more putting it off because of the money. With the membership there are a lot of other activities too. We drove around afterward and had a bite to eat. It was very nice. I did tell him that he needs to let me know he is going to do this or else I think he is doing nothing.

On a SP note, I've walked every morning of my 54th year! My breathing seems to be getting better. We'll see, I have another week of the inhaler. Today I made it 3 miles - took me over an hour, but hey, it's all good.

Yikes, I've gotta jump in the shower real quick cuz we're meeting some friends at 9!

Have a great Sunday!

Hey Zoe,

Maybe you're right. Whoever gets here first tomorrow can start up a daily SBUDDIES post like we used to.

I'm so with you on your new challenge. It's been pointed out to me over and over that I worry too much about taking care of others and I'm too hard on myself. Then, I get upset when I need to be taken care of (or complimented, or appreciated, etc.) and no one does it. So, I need to learn to value myself and not sacrifice so much that I become resentful. It might mean putting myself first sometimes, and if I need something from others, directly asking for it instead of hoping they'll just do it out of the goodness of their heart. Good luck to you, Zoe! I know you can do it! My goal was also to reach my goal weight by May 2011 (my birthday and wedding anniversary month). It's doable, if I do my part :)

Have a good Friday/weekend!

I just noticed this is a "sticky topic" meaning it sticks to the top of the list. I didn't do that when I started it, at least I don't think I did, didn't mean to. I like the idea of having a conversation thread but maybe we could call it something other than "a shout out..." which may sound sort of exclusive. What do you think?

I am turning adversity into a challenge. Other than my sweet mother-in-law, one brother and one sister (and nieces), and my spark buddies, I got nothing for my birthday. My grown kids, nothing. My husband, nothing. I know we are having financial stuff going on now, but really? They couldn't get a card or something from the dollar store?

So, that said, I am using this as motivation that I have to take care of me for no one else will. I want to be at my goal weight by my next birthday. I am doing this for me, no one else. I walked this morning and yesterday joined a 10 minute per day challenge and I'm eating correctly (so far lol).

How is everyone else doing?

Hugs,
Zoe

Merry Christmas!

Wow, impressive. I went to Cal State Long Beach right out of high school without knowing what I wanted to do. Met my hubby, fell in love, and got my MRS. degree instead lol. That was nearly 34 years ago!

I actually love accounting. I like that there are definite answers - things either add up or they don't. Your psych experience probably has something to say about that. lol

Thanks for the bday wishes, I really am getting off the computer and doing something constructive.

Happy birthday! I think your birthday should be a time to go easy on yourself. And when you've been out of the spark routine for awhile, it takes some time to get back in.

Ah, my education. Where to begin? I've actually already finished 9 years of post-high school education and have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I was practicing as a psychologist for about 4 years after graduating when I realized I wasn't enjoying what I was doing. So, I left my job in December and went back to school in March majoring in Accounting. I know, completely different, and I think that's one of the reasons I enjoy it. I'll finish my associates degree in June 2011, and will likely continue on to get a bachelor's in accounting. We'll see.

Tricia - what is your major? I think it's great you're getting further education. I never finished college and think it's kind of too late to bother now, but it has affected my ability to find work.

I'm doing ok but not really back in the SP swing of things so not tracking or eating like I should. But, today is my birthday so I'm giving myself permission. So far I've slept in instead of walked (not entirely planned that way but it was too hot by the time I woke up), and I'm having chips with lunch. But tonight! Well, we'll see.

Hi to anyone else who stops by!

Happy Thursday!

Merry Christmas!

I'm here, I'm here! This is the first chance I've had to log in today. My fall classes started today, so I had one class and have to log in to my 2 online classes and get those organized. Lots to do! I'm exhausted already, and it's only 3pm! Tonight, I'll be starting some homework and taking my son to baseball practice. At least I don't have to cook dinner, we have yummy leftovers from last night. I made a spark recipe (beef and sausage stew). It was so easy, and turned out really good!

So, I have to say, I'm disappointed in myself over the past week. I ate everything I wanted over the weekend, which turned out to a whole lot of extra calories. Not to mention, I've gone off of one of my medications (which is a good thing), but I'm having withdrawal symptoms (bad thing), so I've felt kind of crappy and haven't worked out at all. All that adds up to weight gain. Grrr. Oh well. It happens.

Zoe, how are you doing? How is everyone/anyone else?

I think it went ok; now I just have to wait to see if they call me for a second interview. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Weekly challenge? Piece of cake! Ooops, bad metaphor lol.
I smile at everyone I meet - some smile back others think I'm loony. Oh well, not my problem I'll keep smiling.

Have a great Tuesday!

Merry Christmas!

Good luck in your interview! I hope your son got home safely and you promptly gave him a piece of your mind! I guess what you consider "little kids". I have a 14 y.o. daughter and 13 & 11 y.o. sons. They're my stepchildren, and I've been around them for 4 years. I missed out on sleepless nights & diapers, but also all the cute stages and jumped right in with first periods, first boyfriends/girlfriends, and all the associated pre-teen drama. Want em?

I too made some bad food choices this weekend, right after I said I was back LOL. But for me I attribute it to having some fun with hubby - the worst was for dinner. We had been off-roading all afternoon and both of us was way too hungry to resist going to Red Robin and having a huge, huge Banzai Burger AND fries AND split a hot fudge sundae! Oh well, tomorrow is Monday and another day. Gonna try to not nervous eat as I have a job interview in the afternoon. Oh, and I'm not a night owl, I'm up at this time (1:30 AM) because my idiot son is still out two hours past his curfew. Grrr. If you have little kids, T, I'll trade you!

I've made some HORRIBLE food choices this weekend. I attribute it to being super busy and being a "single parent" for the weekend. I'm exhausted, grouchy, and have had a migraine since yesterday. I'm telling myself that the bad food choices have something to do with it, so hopefully that'll help me in the future.

Hi everyone......was out of town for a few days didn't have the security of my home and schedule and still thought I did OK while away. Weighed in today and found out I didn't do well at all. Up three pounds this week and am trying to get my spark back........
Didn't think it would be harder to restart than it was to initially start this journey. I think being away from the computer and contact with my SP friends is what really did me in. Didn't realize I relied so much on the "group" effort.

Hi Laurel, nice to meet you.

Tricia, I'm back now. I did the blog post to let my sp friend know what's been going on. Thanks for reading and commenting on it.

I know it takes a lot of commitment to post on the blogs, but I also know it is the interaction with people here that keeps me motivated.

So, let's keep it up.

~Zoe - gonna go get a much needed haircut now; I have a big job interview on Monday. Guess I have to color it again too lol.

Merry Christmas!

Hey Zoe & Laurel,

Zoe, I tried to maintain SBUDDIES, but everyone disappeared. I think Shelly hit maintenance and still pops up from time to time. Tracy is around, but hasn't been active on the board. I really haven't heard from anyone else. It's been lonely :( I'm still here, plugging away, finally getting the hang of everything.
