Granted, this is part of an Advertisement for a Hearing Aide Company (Advanced Affirdable Hearing) but there is still some good advice in it.

There’s no question that exercise is great for your general health. Not only does staying active help you to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy heart, but it can also reduce stress and promote better sleep. Overall, the positive effects of staying in shape contribute to increasing your likelihood of living a longer life, which is something we all hope for.

But did you know that working out can also help you to hear better?

Generally speaking, by improving your overall physical health with exercise, you are more likely to maintain better hearing health. To keep hearing your best in the years to come, let’s explore how hitting the gym from time to time can keep your body and hearing in tip-top condition.

4 Ways Exercise Improves Your Hearing

The most apparent benefits of exercise include the ability to build muscle or endurance, but the connection between your hearing and staying fit may be a bit less clear. Think about it this way: Just as our different body systems work together, our ears work with several other parts of our body to take in and process the sounds around us. So, by keeping the other parts of your body in working order, you can benefit your ears as well.

Here are just four of the ways that exercise can improve how your body functions and, in turn, how your ears function.

1. A healthy weight makes for healthy hearing.

It’s no secret that exercise can help you to maintain a healthy weight, and while most of us know this, many also fail to take advantage of it. As of 2016, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) found that almost half (39.8%) of American adults were overweight. Unfortunately, being overweight can put you at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, which can put you at higher risk for developing hearing loss.

In fact, research has found that diabetics are over 2 times more likely to acquire hearing loss than non-diabetics. The good news is that type 2 diabetes is preventable. By adopting a healthy diet and exercising regularly, you can reduce your weight and prevent, or eradicate, the condition. By doing so, you’ll also reduce your chances of developing hearing loss.

2. Your heart’s health impacts your hearing health.

Being physically active not only helps us to feel better, but it is also key to better cardiovascular (or heart) health. One of the greatest benefits of exercising is that it can help prevent heart-related conditions like heart disease. In addition to being the leading cause of death, heart disease is also a risk factor for hearing loss, as those with the condition are 54% more likely to acquire hearing loss.

Very similar to diabetes prevention, taking up a regular exercise regime can help to reduce your risk of acquiring heart disease or other related conditions. The American Heart Association encourages adults to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week to keep your heart healthy and actively prevent both heart disease and hearing loss.

3. Better brain health means better hearing health.

Exercise is a great way to keep your heart pumping, as well as maintain proper blood flow to your brain. Here’s why: Your brain partners with your ears to allow you to hear. In simple terms, sound waves enter your ears, travel through your auditory nerves, and into your brain. In this way, your ears act as the receiver, while your brain acts as the processor. But what does that have to do with exercise?

Part of maintaining your brain’s health is participating in physical activity. As explained by Heidi Godman, Executive Editor of the Harvard Health Letter, staying physically active can boost your brain’s “ability to reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the release of growth factors.” In this way, exercising will help to maintain your brain’s health and, as such, your hearing health as well.

4. Staying fit helps you hear your best as you age.

Staying fit is even more critical to those at risk for age-related hearing loss (AHL). As we get older, our age alone acts as a risk factor for losing our ability to hear, but recent research has found that exercise may help to combat the potential negative impacts of age on one’s hearing health. In 2016, the University of Florida conducted a study to determine if long-term exercise can reduce one’s chances of developing AHL.

Findings revealed that regular exercise could, in fact, slow down the progression of AHL by reducing deterioration of the cochlea, a key component to perceiving sound. With this in mind, adopting a long-term routine exercise regime can also help you to hear better as you age.

Better Hearing Tips for Your Exercise Regime

Now that you know the connection between your ears and exercise, you may be wondering what practices you can start incorporating into your daily routine. These are just 3 things to consider:

1. Exercise every day.

As noted, the American Heart Association offers recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week. The easiest way to achieve this goal is by exercising for 30 minutes each day for 5 days a week. Examples of this type of exercise include activities as simple as brisk walking, gardening, or biking.

If you’re interested in taking your cardiovascular health, and thereby your hearing health, to the next level, you may consider taking your workouts up a notch with vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise. To push your heart rate a bit further, and maybe even break a sweat, consider adding activities like hiking, running, or swimming to your exercise regime.

2. Take up yoga.

To target your ears’ health specifically, you may want to adopt one form of exercise in particular: yoga. Yoga has been found to help prevent, and even reduce, the impacts of hearing loss and tinnitus. By reducing any tension in your neck muscles, certain yoga poses can help to increase the blood and oxygen flow to both your brain and your ears.

According to Dr. Minakshi Welukar, a certified physician and medical writer, yoga is great for preventing and overcoming many ailments, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. For your ears specifically, however, she recommends popular yoga poses, including the tree, lotus, and cobra. To learn more, read her full article on using yoga to combat hearing loss.

3. Turn down your headphones.

These days, it’s commonplace to hit the gym, or even go for a hike, with headphones in our ears. While listening to music can help making working out more enjoyable, sending loud music directly into your ears can negatively affect your ability to hear.

When your ears are exposed to sounds above 85 dB (decibels), you increase your chances of acquiring noise-induced hearing loss. When many of us listen to music on our headphones, the sound level often ranges between a dangerous 95 to 108 dB. To protect your hearing, keep your headphones’ volume to a minimum when exercising.

The secret to a longer life may be a barbell: Strength training as you age reduces your risk for death, according to a new study from Penn State College of Medicine.

Researchers surveyed people age 65 or older about their exercise habits and then tracked them for 15 years. Nearly a third of the study participants died during that period.

Less than 10 percent of the subjects strength trained, but those select few were 46 percent less likely to die during the study than everyone else.

Sure, you could say that older folks who lift must be in better health to begin with. But even after adjusting for BMI, chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, and habits like total physical activity, drinking, and smoking, lifting was linked to a 19 percent reduced risk of death.

Strength training can keep you active and independent in your golden years, says study author Jennifer Kraschnewski, M.D. Not only does it strengthen your muscles, resulting in better stamina and balance, but it also increases your bone density.

Together, those factors reduce your risk for falls and fractures—major causes of disability for older people.

Plus, you’ll burn more calories throughout the day just by having more muscle mass on your frame, which helps you maintain a healthy weight, Dr. Kraschnewski says.

So if you’re already lifting, don’t retire your dumbbells.

Want to start? Strength training can be safe for just about anyone, but if you’re over age 65 and inactive, talk to your doctor about any special precautions you should take, she says. Consider enlisting a trainer to create a program designed around any creaky knees or tight hips.

Don’t think that your age will hold you back, though.

“Older adults have the ability to achieve strength similar to those decades younger by engaging in simple strength training routines,” says Dr. Kraschnewski.

From Spark Trivia, One MORE Reason To Keep Fighting Toward Our Goals:

Obesity may prevent the immune system from functioning properly?

True

Research performed by scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine has shown that obesity prevents the immune system from functioning properly, increasing its vulnerability to infection. In the study, obese mice were 50 percent less capable of killing the flu virus, compared to lean mice. The researchers believe that the same holds true in humans.

McDonald's hamburger is 250 calories and 8 grams of fat, which is a lower calorie and lower fat option than Wendy's Jr. Hamburger. Wendy's Jr. hamburger is 300 calories and 16 grams of fat. Why the big difference? Mayo comes standard on the Wendy's burger, so ask them to "hold the mayo" and you'll save both fat and calories on this option. Always read the menu details to know what's included and what you can easily skip to make it a lower-calorie option. If you want cheese, factor in about 40 more calories.

Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you are probably right!

WALK LIKE THE AMISH

How many steps per day are enough to keep you trim and prevent obesity? A pedometer study of an Old Order Amish community showed that their average man logged 18,000 steps per day and their average woman logged 14,000 steps per day, and they had one of the lowest rates of overweight and obesity of any community in North America.

A second study found that the youth in this community (ages 6 to 18) logged an average of 15,563 steps per day. In contrast to the growing problem of childhood obesity in the general population, being overweight was rare for these Old Order Amish youths. Only 7.2 percent were overweight, and only 1.4 percent were obese.

Old Ways Are Active Ways

While typical North Americans find logging 10,000 steps a day to be a challenge, requiring dedicated walking time to accomplish, the Old Order Amish achieved it with ease with their typical daily activities. In fact, the only day their average dipped as low as 10,000 steps was on Sunday, their "day of rest." The farming community was studied in the month of March, which is a moderate-activity time, rather than a high-activity time of year such as during harvest. The Old Order Amish shun any technology

This pre-electrical, pre-motorized lifestyle involves much physical activity.

The 96 adult Amish and 139 youths studied wore pedometers for a week and recorded their daily steps and other physical activity. They also calculated the body mass index (BMI) for each participant. Use of the pedometers and scales did not violate Amish traditions because they were borrowed. The adult participants were men and women, ages 18-75, and the youths ages 6-18 in an Old Order Amish community in Ontario, Canada.

High Activity Equals Lower Body Fat

None of the men were obese, and only two of the women were obese, an overall rate of 4 percent obesity as measured as a BMI of 30 or more. This compares to 14.9 percent obesity rate in Canada and 30.9 percent in the USA.

The number of adult Amish who were overweight was also far below average. Only 26 percent were overweight, which is half of the rate for Canadians and one third the rate of the USA.

Of note is that the obesity rates for this community do not compare to that of more sedentary Amish communities where they work in tourist shops and furniture factories. In those communities, the obesity rate is similar to their non-Amish neighbors. It might be predicted that it is the high-activity farming lifestyle that keeps this Amish community lean.

The study of the Amish youth sought to give clues as to why children in modern communities are showing increased numbers for those overweight and obese. Studies have shown that 12,000 steps per day equals the recommended amount of 60 minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. The Amish youths were exceeding this number, on average. While the general population of children in the U.S. has an obesity rate of 18.5, in these Amish children the rate was only 1.4 percent.

Eating Like the Amish

The diet of Old Order Amish is not low-carb or low-fat. The study says, "The Amish diet is typical of the pre-World War II rural diet. It includes meat, potatoes, gravy, eggs, vegetables, bread, pies, cakes, and is quite high in fat and refined sugar." But it is balanced with a high physical activity level. This is more typical of marathon training or other endurance sports training, where carbs are considered fuel rather than shunned. This Amish community rarely snacks between meals and has limited access to fast food.

Up Your Activity

The moral of this story is that modern lifestyles have greatly reduced everyday physical activity levels, yet people haven't reduced their food intake to match. To prevent packing on the pounds, you need to move more and eat a little less. There are simple to get you going.

Buy a pedometer or fitness band or start checking your step totals via a phone app.Log or check your steps. Find out how many steps are typical for you on an average weekday and weekend day.Increase your steps by 2000 per day. Add more steps incrementally with a goal of achieving at least 10,000 steps per day.Improve your diet and nutrition. Make your calories count with nutrient-dense foods and ensure you aren't eating too much for your activity level.

Some of us might think that strength training is just for athletes. Well, it’s not! Though athletes use strength equipment in the gym to become stronger and faster, there are other reasons why exercisers of all abilities are gravitating toward strength equipment. You may be surprised at the numerous reasons why you should add strength training to your fitness routine – whether you’re an athlete or not. And remember, strength training doesn’t automatically correlate to getting huge. It means building a healthier body.

Look great and feel great. Did you know that strength training burns calories more efficiently than a cardio workout? For those looking to burn off some fat, strength workouts are a great start. Cutting a new body shape not only gives your body more energy, but it elevates your level of endorphins, or “happy chemicals” released in your brain. Plus, your new look may also increase your self esteem.

Target your workouts. One of the wonderful things about strength workouts is that you can target any muscle group you like. Glutes, back, biceps, you name it – you can isolate any muscle or area with a selective workout.

It’s also a cardio workout. You don’t need to kill yourself running 12 mph on the treadmill to work your heart. Doing various strength exercises not only builds muscle, but it pumps your heart.

Slows the aging process. According to research from Duke University, strength training not only maintains muscle mass that naturally diminishes with aging, but it increases our metabolism, which normally declines with age.

You get stronger. While this is somewhat of a “duh” statement, it’s important to recognize the importance of becoming stronger. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, building muscle strength makes you more resistant to injury, and building bone strength makes you more resistant to developing osteoporosis.

Body weight management. By maintaining consistent strength workouts, you maintain your body weight and dramatically reduce your risk of becoming obese or getting diabetes. Better overall health means that your life and health insurance premiums could be reduced.

The next time you go to the gym, explore the strength area. Take a look at different equipment like dumbbells or selectorized machines. Consult with a trainer who can explain the proper use of equipment and work with you to ensure that you have proper form. Try some new workouts and develop a strength routine that works for your body. Remember, strength training isn’t just for athletes – it’s for everyone.

The "fat burning zone" business is very misleading. It’s true that low intensity exercise uses more fat as fuel and that moderate intensity exercise (that you can maintain for 20 minutes or more) burns both fat and glucose. But, you're better off exercising in the aerobic zone as much as you can, because exercising at this higher intensity burns more total calories. You will burn a larger percentage of fat in relation to glucose when you are working at a lower intensity, but you will also burn fewer total calories and less total fat. The relative percentage of fat burned has nothing to do with weight loss—it's the total amount calories burned that counts.

Thanks for the feedback. You have lost quite a bit of weight. I am impressed. I stayed up late and watched the Penn State vs Iowa game. I graduated from Penn State and it was fun watching my alma mater win...even if it was barely.

I weigh in on Wed and Thurs and then actually record the lower of the two...Is that cheating?

I am new to your team. My goal is to lose 5 pounds a season. I am thinking a slow and steady pace may result in better results. I am tired of losing 10 and gaining 15..

I am starting it with Fall so this week will be my last summer weigh in...Since I started the middle of the summer, I am not hoping for 5 for summer. Luckily my down fall, the soft serve ice cream stands are closing...

I am losing weight 10% at a time. I can do this!

Thanks for your encouragement....I purposed to have a desert lunch. I had a chocolate, white chocolate mousse on top of a flourless chocolate cake at a patteserie (name for French bakery and coffee shop) in Minneapolis for my birthday treat from my kids...it was worth the calories and I had a light breakfast and dinner. July 1st I am starting a 100 day challenge on a spark team with no sugar!

Just read your quote from coach Nicole. Pretty encouraging. I am still maintaining. I know the sweets are my big downfall along with stress eating. It seems so hard to make any weightloss progress at this each. 10 times the effort with 1/10th of the result. I realize though I would gain if I stopped.

I had to buy some new workout clothes because the ones I had were falling off. Not a good thing when you're in a coed gym!! I had my grandson with me whose 19 months so I didn't try them on. I grabbed 2 loose workout shorts and 1 jean skirt in a sz 6, thinking they should fit. When I got home and tried them on, they did! I have to be honest they don't hit me at my waist and there is a drawstring- so I can see where my apple needs to be peared down. Still encouraging when the scale isn't budging.

I love it when I have good coupons! Hope you find a cute pair to buy.
I have been a little stressed about some of my adult children and overate. The food doesnt help the situation at all or change anything(other than preventing me from losing). I was able to get back on track.

emoticon Realized a few days ago that it has been 6 Years since I got my eyes checked!! I'm noticing some small changes in my vision, so I went in yesterday.
The biggest thing was that there is the very Earliest Indication of cataracts. The Opthamologist wasn't concerned, she said I just need to be diligent about wearing Sunglasses (I am pretty good about wearing them, but I will do better).
My vision had changed enough to warrant new glasses, and I had a coupon for 50% off Frames, so my 6 Year Old Glasses got to retire, LOL!

In 2007, a research team from the University of Essex in the U.K. showed that even 5 minutes outside in a natural setting reduced symptoms of depression in 71% of the study participants.

emoticon Stories like this truly make my Heart Happy, MadameJeanne!
emoticon Until the past few years No One in my Family was at all active. After I began walking, my DH, Sister, and Dad started walking. My Husband is fighting stage 4 cancer now, so is not able to stay active. But my Sister and Dad are still walking.

Years ago when my Mom was on weight watchers she started a tradition of walking on Thanksgiving Day after our big Dinner at 1 and then we all came back for pie. It was always multigenerational. We often had 25 family members walking together in MN, for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Sometimes it has been pretty cold. It was a great time to get caught up with each other. This year we couldn't attend the large gathering (40) but after going out to eat with my ds3's family, we went back to their house and my dh(who is being very good about his cardiac rehab emoticon ) the 7 year old, the 5 year old, and I took the dog with us on a walk. The baby stayed home to nap, but their cat followed us all the way to the park, hung around the park with us and walked back too. Today when I went to babysit the dog was very excited to see me. Yes the 3 grandkids, the dog, and I walked to the park again today!!!
