Gail, I bought Asclepias Red Butterfly Milkweed, which I'm not sure is native to Oregon, but I plan to buy some native milkweed, maybe from the NWF or somewhere here in OR. Here in OR, it gets cold and wet, also humid. I didn't think the milkweed flower was pretty, so I'm going enjoy seeing the flower and the butterflies. I'm starting late on starting seeds, so I hope I don't have to wait till next year. The Swamp milkweed is a lot prettier than its name.

Keep saying I can do this!

I had luck planting swamp milkweed seeds in pots and sinking them in the ground over the winter. In nature that is what would happen anyway. In the spring I put them where they belonged. I think I remember that milkweed seeds need some cold in order to germinate.

It took a long time for that Avocado tree to get that big. It had to be over 40 years old, way before I was born. Mango sounds good, that's nice and sweet.

Time for bed, I spent some time ordering some seeds from Burpee. I wanted to buy some milkweed for the Monarch Butterflies. I also bought some phlox and chinese lanterns. All of them are seeds since I have my small greenhouse to start them. I've kind of went crazy with the greenhouse.

Keep saying I can do this!

So do I hope that they grow soon and then I will have some fruits. I did get some figs but not much but learning to get them to grow better. Not sure if Avocados will grow but should. Not sure if I have a yard big enough for it. I also want to get a mango tree. Love mango's more than Avocado's

I hope you don't have to wait too long for the trees to give you fruit. With tropical weather I could see maybe 5 years they'll be at 5', growing 1' a year. Also you can feed them some fruit tree fertilizer, which is what I give my peach tree.

Will Avocado's grow in your area? My Uncle, in Los Angeles, grew one from seed and it was enormous, it took over the whole backyard. He had the smooth skin type, which was 4 - 5 times the size that we get here in Oregon.

Have a nice day, got to get to work,
Deb

DJ, So you bought trees through amazon? I never thought you could go through amazon, to buy trees. Interesting! You definitely are in the right area for lemons and Kiwi. I guess you have to protect them from the heavy storms you get.

I imagine the lemon tree has already flowered, are there any lemons on it?

No I live in Central Florida and I will move my trees into the back patio or into the house. They are small so it is easy to move them.

DJ, So you had your trees in a greenhouse through the winter, or did you just buy them recently? Well, hope they hurry up so you can plant your trees. I've always wanted a lemon tree and I tried growing a dwarf lemon tree in the house, but that didn't work. The weather needs to be sunny and not real cold. Plus you need the help from the bees and insects to pollinate the flowers. I don't have a big enough greenhouse to grow one, or I'd try.

If I'm successful with growing plants in a greenhouse, I think I'll get a bigger one

DJ, What type of trees are they? I planted a Honey Locust last year and its already mostly budded out. Seems like the wet weather was hard on it. It should take root better this year and start growing faster.

I have 2 Cedar trees I planted a couple of years ago, and one did better near the chickens than the other. They are going to be big, but I don't know how big I want them to get. At least they're not near any houses or power lines.

got my trees out and now they are growing more. Have not started the garden until I find out what the city is going to do with the drainage system that they are putting in our yard along with the neighbors that are in the area that I am in too.

So far everything out in the greenhouse is looking good. I found some older seeds for green chilis and jalapenos and got those started. I have only 5 of each but that should be enough. I started some savoy cabbage seeds too. I don't really need any since I made sauerkraut last year but fresh cabbage is nice and I can't find savoy in any local greenhouses.
I used heat mats for starting seeds inside. They really do help with germination.

Gail, Most of everything I planted has come up except the peppers. We replanted the seeds again and only one came up, so maybe its not hot enough or the peppers don't like to be watered as much as the other seeds.

I may just buy the pepper plants at the Nursery, and retry the pepper seeds by themselves in a different planter tray. So far the plants in the Greenhouse are getting more stalkier and they're looking pretty good.

I have a small 4x8 greenhouse. Yesterday it was finally warm enough in northern MN for me to put some of my little seedlings out there. I have a small electric heater just in case the nights get cold and containers of water to absorb heat from the sun during the day and provide some extra warmth at night and that is enough warmth to protect the plants during cold nights.
Yesterday I put all my tomato seedlings out plus some hanging baskets that I had saved from last year, divided and repotted and some marigold seedlings. The sun is not up yet so I will go check on things as soon as the sun hits the greenhouse and open it up for the day.
I also started turning the compost pile. I will do some raking today and do more with that. I tried layering newspaper torn in strips with vegetable wastes during the winter. I think it needs more "brown" material so I will add more leaves and by fall I should have a nice batch of compost for the garden. I have 2 large bins so moving it from one to the other is very handy.
Inside, under lights, I have zinnnias, shallots (from seed), Corno di Toro peppers, jalapenos and green chilis. I also have leeks and onions from seed which I moved to the greenhouse. I have some perennial flowers on a heat mat waiting to germinate.
