Sunday tips: I like planting in strawberry jars, but it can be difficult to water the bottom plants. My next door neighbor cut a piece of PVC pipe about the depth of the pot, capped the bottom and drilled holes at different intervals up and down the pipe. When planting, place the pipe in the center while filling the jar with potting mix. Then pour water into the top of the pipe to water all of the plants.

DID U KNOW? Tighten up saggy eyelids:when I know my sister that my eye cream wasn't cutting it, she suggested this stretch, which she said firms the muscles around the eyes to nix sag: Look up to the ceiling as you try to make your upper lashes touch your brow bone and hold for 15 seconds; repeat 10 times. It feels odd,but I saw a change in a week!

Sunday tips: every summer, I take photos of my gardens. In fall, I mount them in a lined notebook and write comments under each photo. I record what I planted that year, plants I'd like to try and tips to improve next year's gardens. It's a big help to write these things down when they're fresh in my mind. Then when spring rolls around,I'm ready to go.

Sunday tips: here's a trick to keep invasive herbs, like mint, from taking over your garden. Cut holes in the bottom of a large plastic pot- the kind you get from nurseries when you buy a tree or shrub. Bury the pot in your garden with the rim sticking above the soil. Then fill the pot with soil and plant the sprigs of mint inside the pot. I've grown mint in my garden this way for two seasons and so far none of it has "escaped."

DID U KNOW? Keep plants healthy while you're away. The simple trick that ensures your house plants don't go thirsty while you're traveling out of town to visit your in-laws: place a towel in the bottom of the bathtub and fill the tub with 1 to 2 inches of warm water. After watering your plants as usual, carefully place them on the towel. The plants will slowly soak up the moisture, keeping them healthy until you return.

Sunday tips: to harvest onions wait until the tops are mostly dead. Dig out the onions, brush off loose dirt and spread them in a dry place. When well- dried, remove remaining dirt and plant tops. Store in mesh bags and hang in a cool dry place safe from freezing. Check frequently for spoilage.

Am getting quite abit of tomatoes canned but still have lost alot due to very hot/humid weather as well as burst of hard rains. Was told lay straw down the rows so that tomatoes on bottom doesnt touch the ground. Always felt that it was the uneven rainfall as well as humidity.

Eggshells add calcium to the soil---really helps keep tomatoes from blossom end rot if you put some in the hold you dig to plant your tomatoes. I also sprinkile some on top to fight off slugs but also they will continue to add calcium as they decompose. We have been adding them to our compost pile all summer but come late winter we will save them to put in those holes in the Spring.

I have frozen cabbage rolls in the past. they were OK.. Can cabbage be frozen raw without turning dark or should I pre-cook as if making the rolls? Anyone ever canned it?

I will have to check and see if there is another way to use cabbage besides kraut or cole slaw? The only thing I can think of is cabbage rolls? I heard of cabbage and potatoes.

Is there some way to put up cabbage other than kraut? I tried the vinegar slaw receipe to freeze but it didn't go over very well with my family or me.

Sunday tips: at harvest time, cut cabbage close to its base to double your crop ( cut above the lower leaves). Smaller heads, called cabbage buds, will form where the first one was removed.

DID U KNOW? Double the life of fresh flowers: every time you bring blooms in from your garden, they start to wilt sooner than you expect. The trick florists recommend to keep freshly picked flowers perky: fill the vase with 1 part cola to 2 parts water. The sugar in the beverage will nourish the flowers,so your blooms will thrive for twice as long.

If you can not get rotted or use hay then just buy some and after a bit it will rot on its own. I was lucky my neighbor who had horses and milking cows and chickens so always had hay!

Sunday tips: for the easiest potato harvest, just drop potato eyes on tilled soil and cover with at least 6 inches of rotted hay. When you want new potatoes, just lift the hay, pick up what you need and carefully te place the hay.
To harvest mature potatoes, rake the hay aside. The potatoes are much cleaner, and you don't damage any with a potato fork.

DID U KNOW? Patch up the kids inflatable raft: cover the hold with duct tape and blow up the raft. Next, cut a patch from an old shower curtain liner, cover with super glue and secure it over the tape. This creates a waterproof seal,so once the glue dries ( in two hours) the kids can float worry-free,

For more info, put transferring a clematis in your web search---but yes, best to do it in the cooler weather of fall when there is no new growth than in the spring. Best to wait until no new growth--soil is still warm in the fall compared to spring---actually, putting in perenials is best in the Fall than the Spring. So, wait at least until the end of Sept. would be best--unless you are really far North and have snow early--for me, I would be okay towards the end of October but would probably do it at the beginning of that month.

Sunday tips: To grow garlic in a warm area, plant a large clove 2 inches deep in autumn. As soon as the plant sends up a bloom, cut it off. This helps produce larger cloves. When leaves turn yellow in spring, the garlic is ready to harvest. I know this method works because my friend elephant garlic won first place at the state fair.

Sunday tips: one day a friend helping us in the garden sprinkled some loose dirt over our cabbage plants. When we asked why,she explained it kills worms without having to use chemicals. It works! We've used his trick every tear since.

DID U KNOW? Keep flower pots looking like new? To ensure that the flower pots on your front porch don't develop a coating of unsightly white mineral deposits, try rubbing a white candle along the outside of the pot, covering the entire surface. The clear wax will seal the planter without leaving a trace, preventing mineral buildup on your pots so they stay pretty all summer. This works on plastic terra-cotta and ceramic planters.

Sunday tips: save gallon size milk jugs and punch a couple of holes in the bottom of each one. About once a month, put a tablespoon of Mircle-Gro fertilizer in each jug, fill them with water and set them near your tomatoes, melons, ect. It gives them a good boost.

DID U KNOW? SOS for a nail polish spill: before dousing the stain with smelly nail polish remover, head to the kitchen for the sugar. Cover the spill with a generous amount of sugar and let sit for a few minutes. The granules will absorb the polish,so you can simply vacuum up the sugar. This trick works on wood too.

But they need to be the regular kind, not the burpless cucumbers---for some reason their peels don't work. I often have a lot of ant hills all over my yard---due to having very sandy soil. I take my cucumber peels outside and put them near or by the hills to chase them away---it does help.

Sunday tips: when planting carrots or lettuce, mix the seeds with dry used coffee grounds before planting. It makes planting the tiny seeds to these vegetables much easier.

DID U KNOW? Keep ants away-- for less: eek! There's an ant infestation on your patio. For a low- cost chemical- and a free way to get rid of them of the unwelcome guest, simply peel a cucumber, the place the peels along the edge of your patio. Ants can't stand the bitter scent or taste of alkaloids I the peel,so they'll head off the search of a new place to call home.

Sunday tips: my grandmother did not plant her green beans until she harvested all her peas. She pull up the pea vines, till that row, then plant her green beans, generally around July 1. She said she harvest three times more beans this way because the peas add nitrogen to the soil. The beans aren't disturbed by bothersome bean beetles either. That's because they're planted when the insects are past their prime.

Sunday tips: before a freeze,we pick all the partially ripe and even green tomatoes and put them in a single layer in a brown paper grocery bag. We close the bag with a clothespin and bring it indoors. In just a few days, the tomatoes are ripe.

DID U KNOW? Clever use for soap slivers: instead of towing the last bits of bar soap, store the slivers in a zip-top plastic bag, place in your sewing box and use to mark fabric. The soap allows for precise stitching and it washes away easily in the laundry. You can also rub soap bits on itchy seams to soften them, or use the soap to lubricate a needle so it glides through thick fabric easily.
