I m sooooo sad! My Mom did the weeding of her flowerbed and uprooted the asparagus seedlings along with the weeds!

If I can get anymore seeds, I m letting my neighbor who loves growing veggies grow them. Then she will share some with me at harvest time.

At least this way, the seedlings will have a fighting chance!

I m sooooo sad!

planted the kailan (chinese kale), yin sai (chinese celery) and bird's eye chillie seeds a few days back. checking everyday to see if they have sprouted.

So far, not one has sprouted yet. the chinese celery is in the same pot as the coriander. It's dying, I'm afraid!

I tried getting more asparagus seeds but they were out of stock! I tried 2 places! However I got some other seeds that I can't wait to plant the next time it rains. After it rains, the ground is damp and easier to work with.

Malaysia is going through a heatwave. It's been so terribly hot these days! I've got chinese celery, chinese kale, water convulvous and bird's eye chili!

Wish me luck!

Since it takes 2-3 years for asparagus to mature enough to be able to harvest, it would probably be a good idea for you to plant more.

It's taking sooooooooo long for them to grow. I am thinking of planting some more asparagus seeds as I only have like 5 seedlings from the first packet!

The coriander is not enough too! I am thinking of planting another packet too!

The asparagus seedlings are now 2 to 5 inches high. It's been raining nearly every evening or night! I can't wait for them to put out new shoots. I have to be patient!

The coriander is growing well too! But very slowly! Sigh!

The asparagus seedlings have started to sprout!!! So far, I've spotted 4 seedlings!!!

I am so excited! It's been raining almost every evening these days! But on sunny days, I will still have to water them!

Keep both of these 2 types of plants well-watered for good growth and to help prevent coriander going to seed.
When asparagus starts dying back, you can reduce watering. emoticon

if you are going to make a bed for perennials such as asparagus, then it may pay to include some other perennials such as rhubarb(which can also be grown from seed) and Jerusalem Artichokes.
Cheers

I was impatient so I started mine from roots. I have had a few volunteers come up since then and have transplanted them to the area I grow my asparagus in. If yours are 2 years old and in the garden you should be able to get a short harvest next spring..

Asparagus is a perennial plant and from seed it takes 2-3 years before you can start harvesting it. You can buy 1 and 2 year old roots to plant, that way you can start harvesting it the following year. Generally the first year you harvest the spears you can only cut them for 2-3 weeks. As the plants mature you can harvest for 8-10 weeks. You should stop harvesting when the spears decrease in diameter to about the size of a pencil and let the plant grow so it can feed the root so that the plants will re-grow the next year.

My favorite type of asparagus is called Purple Passion. It grows large purple spears that are sweeter than most other asparagus!

I will try to get them in Malaysia first. If I can't, then I'll order them online.

I really hope I can get them locally bcoz it'll be so much cheaper!

Can't wait to get my hands on some seeds!
