emoticon ON all those veggies. I have finally gotten some tomatoes off my plants, but none are growing very big due to not a lot of rain fall---I have watered but it is just not the same as rain.

No tomato yet for me, or any other veggies yet, but some of my tomatillo seedlings survived this year and are growing! I'm so excited, it is impossible to get real Mexican food here in France, and the tomatillos & peppers are basically unknown and unavailable. I "smuggled" the seeds over last summer but they never sprouted.

My catnip is also sprouting...although one of the cats ate the first seedling I planted. I have to get some sort of protection for the 2nd before I plant it.

That would be great and if they can grow there maybe that they can grow here too in this heat. Would love to have peaches and also get the ruby grapefruit tree too.

We don't have peach orchards where I live. A few people have peach trees. However, the last three years there were no peaches because of frost. I hope it was okay that I posted the information about the peach trees.

I just looked up what peaches to grow in cold climates. The National Gardening Association came up. They recommended Reliance, China Peal and Intrepid peaches.

Reliance Peach

The most cold-hardy peach. Originally developed in New Hampshire, this tree produces a heavy crop of fruit as far north as Canada, even after frigid winters. Peaches are medium to large with a sweet, mild flavor. Features a flush of pink flowers in early spring. Ripens in early August. Self-pollinating.

China Pearl

Large, sweet, white-fleshed fruits and exceptional hardiness make China Pearl a must-have for peach growers! This late blooming cultivar can withstand sub-freezing temperatures with little crop loss. And these peaches are big - 3 inches or larger. Great for eating right off the tree or for cooking, canning and freezing. Ripens mid-July in Zone 5.

Intrepid Peach

The perfect cobbler peach. The sweet, yellow-fleshed fruit from this variety is a great choice for baking. Very cold-hardy blooms late in spring to avoid frost zaps and can withstand freezing temperatures at half to full bloom with little or no damage. Also exceptionally resistant to bacterial spot disease. Ripens in mid August. Self-pollinating.

(is it okay that I posted this? thought someone else may find it useful)

Michigan grows peaches so I assume that NY would be able to grow them too. Sorry, I don't know what variety we have, just that there are several towns near where I used to live with big orchards.

I don't think that you can grow peaches in NY but they may have a little one that grows inside and then when summer comes you can take it outside until it gets cold. I wish that I can grow apples here in Florida but have not found any that will grow in this heat. They need the cold to produce the apples.

I am hoping that we get some warm weather soon. Believe me, I am very tired of wearing a winter coat, especially in May!! Well, enough of that.

This year I would like to get some fruit trees--peach, apple and plum. Does anyone know what kind are long for cold climates?

Try Tone but not sure where you can get it. Sometimes I see it at home depot and lowes but not often. You also might try Walmart too not sure it they have it but this is organic too

Ordered my garden yesterday! Started reading up on varieties, determinate vs. indeterminate plants... trying to be smarter about this than I was last year. I started from seeds last year, too, and made some mistakes. I was going to buy plants this year, but there's just not as many different things to pick from. And I'm cheap... so, seeds again. I have some fiber pots coming and seeds for:

dwarf blue curly kale
sun king broccoli
sweeter yet hybrid cucumbers
brandy boy hybrid tomatoes
genovese basil
calypso cilantro
looseleaf blend lettuce

Hoping to start the kale and broccoli early and then if it's successful, maybe try a second round in the fall. Will rotate my beds and be smarter about my layout this year. And I have my own compost from last year, waiting to be worked in. I put the beds IN last year and I'm excited to try again. Less startup work and more experience under my belt this time around.

I tried to go all organic last year and my yield was significantly less than my mother in law's garden, which gets doused with Miracle Gro constantly. I'm hoping the new compost will help give me a good start, and I have some blood meal to work into the beds, too... but anyone have any good recommendations on organic fertilizer that I can use throughout the season?

Going to look up that threat on liquid manure next. Sounds diabolical.

I put some of my dry beans in a paper towel that was dampened and put it in a plastic bag and they are sprouting and now I need to figure out how to plant them. Was not expecting them to grow but they did. I got the beans from the grocery store a long time ago.

Planted my first seeds last week--indoors. I have babies this week. This is my first time to try planting (collards, tomatoes, pepper, arugula, and kale) from seed. It was therapeutic with the frigid temperatures outside.

Had that happen to a couple of my plants when I had to go away with my husband to Gainesville and come back and found that they were not watered and had to get the ground to take water again and that is the only way to get the ground to take the water again. Just be careful if the plant is a watery plant they don't survive in all that water so you may need to put it in another pot until you get the ground to reabsorb the water again.

DJ, you could be right is she has it planted in a terracotta pot.
Also, when you are going away, can you move it where it gets more shade than sun ---that also might help.

It almost sounds like your soil needs to have it soak in a bucket that will hold the plant until the water reabsorbs it again. If the soil gets too dry the water will pass through the soil and the plant will not get any water because of the soil not being able to hold water. You need to soak the whole pot in water for about four or more hours to get the soil to hold water again.

Guessing you don't have a neighbor that would come over and water it for you. Hope that bottle idea works---you might want to try that out before you go away to see how it works but how big in your container--thinking you might be overwatering the plant to start with.

Take a plastic bottle and fill it up then put some holes in the lid and then stick it in next to the plant but be careful of the roots. See how that works.

Any tips on how to keep container tomato plants well watered. My tomato is soaking up at least 6 litres a day which I supply via 2 x 3 litre plastic juice bottles. When I go away for a day or too it starts to wilt. It sits in a dish of water. What can I do? BTW it is summer time in New Zealand.

I AM SURPRISED NOT HAVE GOTTEN ANY SEED CATALOGS YET, BUT THEY WILL PROBABLY BE COMING BY THE DOZEN BEFORE TOO LONG! HEHE I USUALLY GET WHATEVER I GET FROM WALMART OR LOWES ANYWAY. MONEY GETS A LITTLE TIGHTER EACH YEAR AND SO DO MY NUMBER OF PLANTS. OH WELL! TAKING IT DAY BY DAY!

I already have several seed and plant catalogs also. I love to look at the pictures and conjure up all kinds of plans. I too find it expensive to order from catalogs but sometimes do it anyway if I have the extra money tucked away. I often don't but am thankful for Lowe's and Walmart and a handful of nurseries in Greenville and Goldsboro.

Already have 2 seed catalogs---I do enjoy looking thru them but wish there was a local nursery that carried more of the different varieties I see in the catalogs. Shipping costs and the prices in the catalogs make it difficult to buy from those sites.

Ok

If you tell God no because He won't explain the reason He wants you to do something, you are actually hindering His blessing. But when you say yes to Him, all of heaven opens to pour out His goodness and reward your obedience. What matters more than material blessings are the things He is teaching us in our spirit.

This is where talking of plants and veggies take place---of course, we can talk about these elsewhere, too---but if that is your main interest, this is the place for you.
