Wow - Hi -- I was born in Salem, Oregon - course I don't really remember that. chuckle

We used to live right down on the edge of the Big Salmon river in Idaho - between WhiteBird and Riggins. We had wood cook stove of course. Dad used to go up into the forest with several families would cut down a couple of trees and share the wood. When ran out of that wood, us kids(about 12 and 13) had an old jeep we went up and down the river to gather drift wood. Jeep did not have a key -- we had to open the hood and touch a piece of copper tubing from the battery to the distributor to get it started. Great adventures.

Hi Echo,
I am a fellow Oregonian. I grew up in St. Helens. I remember hanging a radiator bag off the front of the car to keep spare water in for both drinking and filling the radiator. Later we graduated to washed bleach bottles for carrying water. I also sat in Dad's lap and helped him drive. Nice we were both skinny enough to do that.

Linda,
Do you remember what some of the Queen for a day requests were? I remember one woman asking for a washing machine. Sure a lot different now when you watch Extreme Makeover.

I remember the yummy and nostalgic Holiday dinners we had in Salem, Oregon with grand-parents there. Granny always made such delicious turkey dinners. Would not let anyone else help. We usually lived a ways away so made trips in old cars that dad had to stop at various rivers to add water to the radiator. Same rivers each time. Most of the time he had to drive slow because of some mechanical problem. It car broke down, he's get his tools out and fix it. Then we'd be on our way again.

This morning I happened to think of the show that used to be on called Queen for a Day that celebrated a housewife for a day. Seems appropriate to remember for this Mother's Day.

One time I babysat for 3 families at once who were all going out together. I think there were 6 kids all together. Babysat for about 5 hours I think that night. One gave me $3, another gave me $4, and the third one gave me $5. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven with so much money!!!

Oh yeah -- baby sitting for 50 cents an hour. And 75 after midnight. One family I sat for had 4 kids - watched them one Saturday night. When they got home the husband did not have any money to pay me. So the wife made him give me his watch for security till he paid me. I got paid the next day.

It is fun the memories that are triggered. Our church youth group went on a bottle drive. We had Dad and the pickup with a canopy. We walked. A group on either side of the street, knocking on doors and giving our little spiel about the money going for a youth retreat. We hit paydirt when an old guy opened his garage and said we could take all of his beer bottles. I believe we had to go back a second time to empty the garage. I think we made about a hundred dollars during our drive. I don't think there were more than about five of us doing the drive either.

So that triggered all kinds of church youth group memories. I can think of at least four different ones we went on. Communing around a campfire, singing songs and putting on skits was fun and peaceful.

Yeah, I remember picking up the coke bottles to sell them for money for candy or the movie or something. I remember babysitting for something 50 cents an hour back then too.

Remember Cherry Cokes at the drugstore.

And -- teeny town in Idaho - we had a movie once a month. Someone brought screen and projector. Was in the IOOF Hall. Us kids went up to the top of WhiteBird Hill -- had 17 switchbacks. Our Mom's had the car parked at each switchback - literally hairpin curves - us kids walked and gathered every pop and beer bottle along the highway. dropped them off at the car each time. We had to wash the dirt off the bottles.

Then took the bottles to the only "beer parlor" that bought our bottles -- had enough money to take 6 kids to the movies that month.

Interesting - I've never received a notification of posting on any of this thread. Did not receive notification of about 5 of the other team. Went to my team page and found this. going to check out some more.

Mom and Dad let me watch them on the Ed Sullivan show. they commented the whole time about how untidy they were, that they looked like they had crawled out from under a rock. I really was not smitten by the Beatles, but I loved singing their songs. My crush was on Kurt Russell. I loved him when he kicked Elvis and later in the Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit. More recently, Overboard and Stargate.

Carrying our chairs to the gymnasium at school so we could watch John Glenn launch into space on a small black and white television with bad reception. It was so exciting.

We had gym lockers and uniforms that consisted of blue shorts, and a white short sleeved shirt usually with snaps, extra pair of socks and white keds. We also had to take showers together. Talk about humiliating. However, we did have really cool PE classes. We learned archery, volleyball, dancing, basketball, relays, etc. I had PE from 5th grade on. We had two recesses and a 45 minute lunch break too. This was at a public school. Flash forward to 2010 and the kids sit on their rears all day and everyone wonders why there are so many behavior problems.

Phosphate sodas?????

I remember when I thought I was absolutely beautiful in my white poorboy shirt, with the black and white houndstooth hiphugger skirt with wide shiny black belt and a pair of gogo boots.

I wish saddle oxfords would come back in style. If I saw a pair at a shoe store I would buy them. I really don't care about style.

They are not saddle oxfords but they will have to do.

Remember when stores were closed on Sundays and usually after 5 or 6 in the evening. That was because women didn't work as much then and did their shopping during the day when the men were at work. So nothing was open. I remember riding our bikes in the empty parking lot of the grocery store on Sundays.

We used to celebrate May Day too. We picked wild flowers and put them in the baskets that we had made & left them on doorsteps. We also tried to do it in secret.

Yes, I remember the glass soda bottles & the old rubber corks with a plunger that you put on them to keep them fresh. I remember collecting bottles and taking them to the grocery store in my wagon to collect the money for them.

I remember candy bars for a nickle & MOON PIES that were BIG!!!

With May 1st coming up it reminds me of may Day. Where all teh kids made paper baskets, and gave them to friends and neighbors. They knoked set the flowers down and ran away.

This always made the day brighter for the giver and the reciever. share a May day story with the group
