July 2nd, 2013.
My 7th anniversary. Busted butt to try to look good, because, let's face it, I'd been feeling pretty unappreciated the prior couple years. Didn't get told I looked good. Didn't get laid. Got rushed through our meal, the first date we'd had in like 3 years.
Ouch.
Needed some source of validation (pathetic, I know), so took a selfie and made it my Facebook profile.

One of my friends said my pic looked like Kaylee, and he knows I'm good with my hands, so he thought it was neat.
I was in college when the show aired, and back in college when the film came out, so I'd heard friends talk about it, but, never watched.

Pulled up Netflix.
ZOMG.
I was so hooked.
Eventually got everyone in the household hooked as well.

I saw one of my SparkFriends, whose goal it so cosplay an arse-kicking character she admires, and I thought, that would be another thing to shoot for. I'd love to cosplay Kaylee.
I'd have to grow my hair out again, and get much closer to my goal weight to not look totally dumpy in her coveralls... but, it's something to shoot for.

My bestie was so excited when Serenity came out that she took three of us who had never watched the series with her to see the movie in theater. Spoiler alert!! I then came home and got the series from Netflix so hubby and I could watch and fell in love and began hooking other people on the series. But I never fail to tell people to make sure they watch the series BEFORE the movie;)

I couldn't give you the exact date I became a Firefly fan.

I never caught it on Fox.
I'd heard about it on some of the of the survivalist forums & read an editorial about it in Backwoods Home Journal.

I bought & read the Serenity novelization by DeCandido (regrettably not written by Mel Odom, a buddy & fellow Oklahoman, who wrote some of the Buffy & Angel Series for Whedon) & fell in love with the characters.

A few weeks later I found the series boxed set & Serenity DVD in a pawn shop & snatched them both up for $40.00 (shuddup & take my money!).

I took them home, watched all 14 episodes & the movie in one sitting & have been a die-hard fan ever since!

I remember watching when Firefly first came on Fox, but I had missed the first couple episodes so the first show I caught Bushwhacked. I was a mite confused. I watched a few more episodes, but when I saw the trailer for Serenity I remember siting in a theater with a group of my friends and I was the only one who knew what it was, and was *super* exited.

Good thread!

I remember hearing about the show when it first aired on Fox but I worked evenings and I guess I forgot about it then. When Serenity was announced I was already a big fan of Joss for Buffy and Angel so I figured I should find the show and get caught up. I joined the promotional website forums that Universal created and made many friends from all over the world, many of whom I've met in person. Now, I still meet people regularly that are fans and there's usually an instant friendship that happens. Love being a Browncoat!

There are multiple Firefly/Serenity Fan made films being made. And of course, the Con Man series that was just put out. I'm wondering if we will start having Browncoats that first got their exposure in one of the Firefly related films/shows. What do y'all think of that?

I watched the first airing on the evil Fox network. How I hate Fox. I am a HUGE Joss Whedon fan so I was really excited to watch the pilot and just loved every minute of it. I could tell they were showing the thing out of order though, because it didn't make sense, but I knew it was fantastic and when I heard it was cancelled I was just appalled! Sometimes I still can't quite believe it!

A huge S/F fan since childhood, I always check the new Fall/Spring TV line-up for something to be excited about. I remember seeing adverts for this "SciFi Western" and wondering how the h-e-double hockey sticks they were gonna pull that one off. We caught the first episode, "The Train Job," and liked it, although it seemed like we jumped into the middle of the series. We were never able to catch another episode before we heard it was cancelled.

Shopping one day at the local Big Box Store (December 2003), I saw the complete set and snapped it up. We watched the entire series over the next few nights and raved to everyone about it. Over that first weekend, we had a viewing party for several friends and the rest is history!

We kept up in a geeky-family way with Firefly news and when the cast appeared at DragonCon in August 2004 DH and DD attended. DD was just 16 and had a huge crush on Nathan Fillion. They wandered the convention and came on Nathan by himself in a hallway. DH was his usual bubbly self but DD was completely and uncharacteristically tongue-tied, uttering not one word even when Nathan hugged her and kissed her on the cheek. If only we'd had a camera!

I made the mistake of reading the movie novelization of Serenity before seeing the movie and hid the book from everyone. The movie was a huge disappointment. I knew Joss had given up on Firefly then, because the movie was such a final ending. (I know many people disagree.)

I'm putting Serenity: Leaves on the Wind on my birthday/Christmas list this year.

It was 2011. I had been laid off for a few weeks, was bored out of my mind and frustrated as there were no new jobs for me to apply to...then I decided to veg out and watch something "mind-numbing" on Netflix (didn't have cable). I was flipping through the popular movies/shows section and I noticed this show called FireFly. I saw it only had a few episodes and knew I could blast through those quick enough. After watching 3 shows I stopped. I waited for my wife to come home so we could watch them all together. We spent that following weekend watching the rest. All 14 episodes. I was so excited. I told her that we had to get cable back so we could watch the new episodes. She loves spoilers so she went online to IMDB to see if there were any more seasons that might be coming out onto Netflix or that we could buy on Amazon to catch up and then her mouth dropped. I still remember her pout when she turned to me and said "that's it....they cancelled the show after 14 episodes!"
Then we discovered the movie...watched it that same weekend and spent Sunday night with looks of horror and tears stuck to our faces. It just wasn't right. It was just plain torture. It's over? That's it? What? NO! NO!!!!!!

Now, every year around Christmas time, we spend a weekend watching the show, followed by the movie, and complain about how horrible it was for them to cancel it...and the cycle continues.

I had a friend that told me about this great Joss Whedon show that I should see. We watched the first episode, and then decided to watch the rest of the show on a Saturday (we were students in the summer). I immediately fell in love with it! It's just such a beautiful show. Since then I have become more familiar with Whedon's work and I must say that I am a fan!!

Last month I watched Firefly and Serenity again, and fell in love with the show all over again.

Never realized I hadn't posted on this thread. :)

I was once staff on a Track for Dragon*Con for the TV show "The Tribe." One of the actors on the show is a friend of mine, and he and his bandmate (their band is Last Picture Show...look their page up on Facebook. YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!) were huge Firefly fans. They kept talking about the show constantly, even doing a cover of the Theme song for their concert at Dragon*Con. I didn't pay much attention to it the first year, but the next year when the movie had came out, they kept going on and on about it.

"I didn't expect those characters to die!"
"I was happy that we figured out River and why they really wanted her..."

I stumbled across a Browncoat booth in the Exhibition Hall that same year, with movie poster swag lying on their tables. I thought "Oh...THIS is what they were talking about? Huh."

I come home from Dragon*Con, and a marathon is playing on Sci-Fi. I sat down, ironically catching the first episode by sheer luck...and I was hooked from there. :)

Thanks for pointing that out, RNRHEATHER! I'm kind of behind in my emails and hadn't seen the notice. I bought the digital version and am now torturing myself by not reading it -- yet! I did a quick scan and it looks so SHINY!

The movie was such a shock. It was wonderful and awful at the same time. It's been years since I first saw it and I still mourn.

There is a continuation of the story that is supposed to come out soon in a short comic book series. Zak Whedon has written it. SPOILERS include that it starts out with a very pregnant Zoe.

I'm actually pretty new, only having watched the series about a year and a half ago. I've watched them all many times, though! Fun fact: I JUST watched Serenity last week. I am still reeling.

I was introduced to it, after it was cancelled by a friend who loaned me his DVDs. I was immediately hooked/obsessed. After I finished the DVDs I immediately bought the movie. I recently bought the board game that just came out too :)

I didn't watch when it first aired, it was up against something else I watched but I can't remember what now. Funny how the show that "won" got forgotten and the one that "lost" became a total favorite. I saw "Serenity", but never got to see the series until last winter when I got a Netflix subscription for Christmas. It was one of the first series I watched from start to finish - and I was so sad when I was done the first time.

I'm looking for my inner athlete, but I'm afraid I may have eaten her. If I'm very quiet I can hear her screams of terror.

I watched the first time when it aired on FOX. I was so sad when it was canceled. I then was reintroduced to it when they ran it on SciFi. I ended up watching all of the episodes and was in love again. It is a regular in my Netflix rotation.

I'm a late comer to Firefly - a friend was watching it on Netflix and introduced it to me. I own the DVD now. Trying to get into Agents of Shield, but it doesn't have the same shiny magic

i'm almost ashamed to admit ... i first watched Firefly when it aired live on Fox ... so for the longest time i'd only seen the few out of order episodes they actually aired before cancelling it. .. which to this day still haunts me when i see a cool show and I'm like well i'm not going to start watching it bc it'll just get cancelled ... ugh .. i've missed out on quite a few good shows and feel too swamped now to catch up

anyways ..i'd been a member of the yahoo browncoat ohio group for awhile just b/c it was one of the few places at the time to chat with people online with similar interests

i moved to pasadena in 2006 and a month after there was a can't stop the serenity charity screening in town ... i actually met ppl there who were from ohio and actually went to the school i had and knew ppl i went to HS and college with (weird) .. but anyways..

that's when i learned it's this whole big community ... shiny

now sadly (enter ashamed part) despite owning the TV series DVDs and regular and collector's copy of the movie ... i still haven't watched all the episodes .. not even when they re-aired part on SciFi (yes back when it was still an i and not a y)

somewhere at home i still have the signed Shindig script I won at that pasadena screening... and a soundtrack or two that i won at subsequent events.

i'm back in Ohio since 2010 and never made it to Browncoat day at disney .. but i heard it's lots of fun.

now i'm in cincinnati but without a car and haven't met too many ppl outside of school

but yes even these days it's really fun to meet ppl who are fans of the series and actors.

i wish i'd watched some more shows the BDHs are in (remember that skittishness about watching new shows....) ... but I really enjoy Suits .. i watched Stargate Atlantis .. but i think that might be it

How are you measuring your year? Speeding tickets, cups of coffee, love

Remember when you were first introduced to the Firefly universe? Please tell us about it.

For me, several friends and I watched the series on the SciFi channel the first time they aired it. As it progressed, our group got larger and more excited about the show. And then it ended and we found out that what we had seen was all there was!

So we all bought the dvds when they came out. Those of us still in town get together every so often and watch a few episodes and/or the movie. I have an extra set of the dvds that I loan out when I get a chance to introduce a newby to Firefly.
