The convention is the coming weekend and I must finish my costume. Everything except the teal shirt is done and I'm having troubles with my sewing machine.

I'll post a photo when I get everything together.

I don't know why these things double post sometimes.

Still doing a costume is proving to be lots of fun!

Thank you, JENIFIREHARP.

I do plan to do the two bun thing, too. My nephew asked if I was going to dye my hair, too. Nope, that's a bit too far. LOL

Saw the pic. That is a great start for your costume. Are you going to put your hair up in two circular pig tails? I believe that is how Kaylee was in that scene. That would be cute!

I've put a picture in the photos in my SparkPage. The picture is of me in the stuff that will make up the Kaylee costume once I get it all modified and made.

Sleeves have to come off the coveralls, a few other sewing changes to the coveralls. Make the overalls used and old. Add the patches - bear, heart.

I'm going to dye the under shirt a brighter pink. The parasol needs to be painted. The turquoise shirt jacket will have to be made.

The coveralls actually fit better than they appear in this picture. I've been sick the last few days and am still bloated.

I also have black boots so I can go without the parasol and shirt jacket and still be in semi correct costume. My sister says they need to be scuffed up since they look too new.

Once I get all (or most) of the work done, I'll get another photo to show y'all.

It will be a while before I have the costume ready to model. The soonest convention that we might go to is still 4 months away so I have some time.

I got the coveralls (almost perfect fit now) and the bear patch. Most everything else is on order. The aqua brocade top is proving hard to locate. I may have to make it myself - if I can find the fabric or something even near it. I got a different brocade and style Chinese jacket that may or may not do the job with modifications. We'll see what happens. I went ahead and ordered some boots so I can go without the jacket if need be.

None of it is exact, but it will be close enough for an impression of Kaylee.

It was pretty good I'll admit! I suppose if I'd known it was going to be the only one I'd go to for many years I would have picked it, but I was a little young so I didn't know how big of a deal it would be years later. I totally agree with the coveralls thing, if they're a little big it's better than being a little small.
I think we need to see a pic of the costume!!!

Congrats on your first con! You're gonna have a great time, cons are one of the very best ways to spent a weekend! And your costume sounds fabulous. And really, it's coveralls. If they're a little big by the time the con happens, that's ok :)

That's so cool that they want it to be the best experience for you possible. Believe it or not, I've never been to anything other than an X-Files convention several years ago.

Thank you both! I will follow your suggestion on size.

The convention should be great fun. The rest of the club found out that I had never been to one and they have already started working so I will see and experience whatever is most interesting and fun.

I feel so special. emoticon

I agree that you should buy a costume that fits you now, and take it in if you need to in those few months...

I hope you have a blast at the convention!!!

Congrats on plans to go!!! That sounds like it will be a blast and it sounds like you've got your costume well planned. I would vote to get something that fits now, and then just take it in when the big day gets here. It would suck to do all the work of perfecting a costume and then not have it fit because life got in the way. You can totally do this and I'm sure it will be a blast!

Howdy, Everyone!

I'm going to my first science fiction convention in a few months or maybe early next year with my local science fiction club. I plan to have a Kaylee costume by then. I'm thinking the one with overalls and the blue jacket and parasol from the pilot Serenity episode of Firefly. The other club members that are taking costumes are taking Trek and B5 costumes.

I've got the bear patch and a red heart on order. And a blue brocade oriental jacket that doesn't exactly match the original aqua one, but I think I can modify it to look similar. I can sew, but prefer to do small adjustments. I'm still looking for a coverall that is right, the shoes, and the white parasol to paint.

And then there is the little thing of what size I will be by the time we go to the convention. I figure that I should get a coverall that almost fits me now and then take it in when it is closer to the con.

Any suggestions and thoughts?

StillFlyin
