You are off too a great start. Remember to log all your food & watch your salt intake, you don't realize that really effects your weight. Also when you hit a plateau don't get discouraged, it's yours body's way of trying to catch up.

THEREFORE DO NOT WORRY ABOUT TOMORROW, FOR TOMOROW WILL WORRY ABOUT ITS OWN THINGS. SUFFICIENT FOR THE DAY IS ITS OWN TROUBLE.

I think that everyone here has offered so much sound advice that I don't think I can add anything new or improved, but I wanted to make sure I threw my hat in the "support" ring. Any of us are here whenever you need us!

One step at a time Katie. You made the first one and good for you! Just remember, you didn't get that way in one day so you can't undo it in one day. It's going to be a journey, not a destination. I love this team and our backs are big, so climb on board. I fall all the time...I'm human. I'm glad sparkpeople and all my teams are here for me, just as I'm here for all of them. You're one of us. Together we will take that journey. One second at a time, one minute at a time, one hour at a time, and one day at a time.

I also have knee problems. Severe osteoarthritis...bone on bone. I find a way. I started by just walking. It's the single best thing you can do. Get your heart rate up, then bring it back down by recovering. Each day go a little farther. You can do it. Here are two of my favorite quotes..."If you want something you have never had you must do something you have never done." Thor Winston... and
“How do you go from where you are to where you want to be? I think you have to have an enthusiasm for life. You have to have a dream, a goal, and you have to be willing to work for it. Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” Jim Valvano

Check out Thor Winston's song "I'm Trying" at this link...http://www.thorwinston.com/?page_id

I'm sure you've heard the music before but listen to the words. I love this song and I love these quotes. I hope they help.

I genuinely feel bad for moms. Their work is never done. I take care of my mom now because she can't. Moms are the backbone of this country. Do this for you Katie. Not for anyone or anything else. You can use other things or people for motivational purposes yes, but get healthy for you. You deserve it! stevo5o

Hi! I suggest that you change one habit at a time. Don't overwhelm yourself with everything at once or you will be in 'diet' mode.
This is a life transition! Today drink your water, when you master that habit add another. etc.
Work out for 15 min. then add minutes (and days) as you get stronger.
If you have a bad day don't wait till Mon. or next month! Get right back to the good habits and don't waste any time beating yourself up! Praise and reward yourself for every accomplishment.
This journey takes time, enjoy the ride one day at a time.

HI Katie
Welcome and I must say what a beautiful bride you were.
As many have already said you have taken the first baby step to achieving your ultimate goal of a slimmer you and a healthier you for your family.

Just a thought you remind me of a combination of Ron (with his bad knees) and Aubrey(with her family) on last season's BL. Both of them were able to loose weight although I have to admit that being on the ranch with Jillian and Bob sue helps a bunch. What I was focusing on was that neither of them were young and super athletic yet both were able to loose.

My best advice is when I stick to plan...I happen to be low Carb, but whatever you decide on...it works and when I go off the path then it doesn't.

I too am a diabetic like your Mom and thus I do best on a low carb way of life. IF you are a list maker then make your plans on paper or on the computer.
One thing you can do now is to go through your cupboards and get rid of any "junk" type foods. It is too tempting for many people to have it around. If you can't do that because of feeding kids and a hubby then make one cupboard "OFF LIMITS" for yourself (make a sign with a skull and crossbones LOL) and keep all the junk type foods there.
Also stock up on foods that are good for you again with the weight loss plan you use in mind.

Remember the "portion rule" a portion of protein is the size of your palm, carbohydrate portion the size of your fist and fat the size of your thumb. Check out your sizes and servings and that will amaze you as it did me!

Last of all remember this is a way of life from now on or you will do as I have done so many times before. Loose and then hit a plateau and just jump back into your old ways. Then you have to start again...however, I love the saying...
Failer is OK...Quitting is NOT!

It is not going to happen in a few weeks or months and for some it takes a few years so treat your life like that... do what you can now and then add more and more as you get healthier and stronger.

Hello and Welcome Katie. I am also kinda new, I joined almost a month ago. I have stopped drinking diet coke and drink only water (if you don't like water add crystal lite, that's what I do). I track everything I eat, and I also write it down in a notebook.I eat alot more fruits and veggies. I walk 60 minutes everyday, and I just started running 30 minutes today along with walking.I also do 25 sit-ups and 10 minutes of jumping jacks everyday. I also do 12 strength exercises (mainly for my core)everyday. I have good days and bad, where I think I am not doing enough, like my weight is just not moving, but I keep going and take it one day at a time.

I also have 3 boys, ages 9,4 and 2 so I know how hard it is, but we both can get thru it, just take it one day at a time.

Stay strong and you can acheive this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will be here for you.

Katie- Welcome. I know it seems difficult to work out with your injury, believe me, I can relate. I have my second of three foot surgeries in a year on June 8. However, there ARE things you can do. I use the heck out of my Wii fit and Wii sport but even if you don't have those, you can improvise. Look through the spark exercises and you'll find that there's loads of upper body, core and maybe even some lower body (laying abductions and adductions for example) that you can do.

As for exercise, I box. It allows me to stand pretty much in one spot but still get my cardio up. Also water aerobics are great for bad knees. If there's no class in your area go onto Amazon and look for books on how to set up your own. There are specific books for injury rehab. And no BS about bathing suits either! SO WHAT. Nearly everyone is insecure about their appearance if they're in one and they're more worried about people seeing them than paying attention to you. And if they are worried about you then they can take a flying leap.

Also, check out your local libraries and video rental stores. There are many workouts you can do from a chair if your knee injury is severe. See if there are some you like and then buy it.

Personally, I'd start with one area that needs to change whether it's food, building up your exercise routine or whatever and work on one area at a time. Exercise is the best place to start because it revs up your metabolism but whatever works for you. Pick one meal where you can eat healthy. Breakfast or lunch is easy because you can automate it by having 2-3 healthy choices and then rotating between them as you feel like it. Once you get a handle on that meal in 2-3 weeks then change up another one. Leave the meal that's most difficult for last so that you have confidence in your new self to tackle it.

Also, if you don't have a crockpot, BUY one. It's so nice to be able to prep the night before, stick it in the fridge and then pop it in the pot in the morning before you leave. THEN you don't have to think on the way home about what the heck you're going to cook when you've been running all day and it's 90+. There are great recipes on spark and all over the internet and library for crockpot meals that are low cal, low prep and filling. If you want some Sparkmail me. I'll be in Canada for a few days but I will definitely send you some. I have 4 kids so I not only have one crockpot but three. LOL

Hang in there. Taking the first step is the hardest. REALLY!

Tami

Hi Katie, As you know you have done the most important step asking for help. With small kids I know it is hard to keep the Focus on yourself and weight loss. YOU ARE WORTH IT!!! Your kids need a healthy mother. You have made your mind up and let nothiug get in the way of it. Start with small steps moving more, eating less, less snacking. Replace soda with green tea, eating lower fat foods, no fast foods and most important is portion control...Spark People has many subjects you can subscribe to daily for information. You can do this!!!!! We are all behind you emoticon

HI! Your doing so good already! Look at that ticker move! Just remember that it all can start with baby steps, just doing anything better today than you would have yesterday is a step in the right direction. And don't let a bad meal, day or week stop you. Even the littlest changes can mean the world of good for your body and your health. Good luck!
