DJ.... I so understand. Sometime, I see my picture on FB and wonder, when did I get so old.???? I went on a mini vaca with DD & DGD...2 days out & needed full day to rest up. It creeps up on you & you don't notice it so much at home. At least that is how I feel.

The last job I had on the mainland I was on my feet but my shifts were 4-6 hours and only part-time, 3-4 days a week. I had trouble back then but could manage.

Yesterday I took pain pills prior to leaving for our friend's funeral. About an hour later standing for the first part of the service and a couple of songs I did not think I was going to 'make it' before we could sit down. Of course I could have sat down but it was just 'surprising' to me the change in my body. I don't notice it in the same ways when home so much ... not as self-conscious about it I guess?

Of course, many at the funeral were in the same state - or worse - than I. I felt sorry for some of the friends that were doing special presentations and could barely manage the few steps up. I could 'feel' their pain/discomfort.

My husband had asked our neighbors if we could borrow their truck as we are still without our car (in process of repairs, waiting on yet another part from mainland) ... they offered their car instead which "I" was grateful for because sometimes - depending on the truck - it is difficult for me to get in and out of.

Having had to 'stay home' from our family's wedding/reunion on the mainland this past week due to not being able to travel the car, plane and train distances/times ... and just the discomfort and all the considerations I/we had to 'think' of about me just going to the funeral really brings it home on 'how much' this is impacting my life. It's been 'creeping' up on me the last 15+ years and I do 'manage' it fairly well with pain creams, pain pills (when absolutely necessary) and now trying to 'keep moving' but I guess this past week it's been hitting me harder 'mentally'!!!!

If that makes any sense.

It's also 'hard' when you are out socially (for whatever occasion) and you do not 'look' like you have a problem but you are 'sitting' most of the time when you'd 'like' to be up and helping out but just cannot. If people do not know you - or know about your condition - they sometimes tend to think you are a snob or stand offish. And I dislike 'talking' about it or bringing it up ... I don't like to 'complain' or carry on about my health (well, OTHER than here - ha! but that is what this is for!!!).

I don't 'get out' very often - maybe once or twice every 3-4 months. It will be different when I go back to selling at the Farmer's Market ... that will be on Weds every week ... IF I can manage that ... it's been 3 years since I have done that.

But right now the few times I get out - to a social function or to shop - it really hits me hard how little I can handle ... but harder 'mentally'. I'm not getting depressed or anything ... and feel blessed I DO HAVE THE MOBILITY I HAVE ... just adjusting I guess?

I was busy at work today (a 9 hr shift) up and down the stairs in the townhouse a lot, doing housework while the ladies were all out somewhere till 3 pm. I did not notice a whole lot of discomfort except that my feet got tired. I did not attempt vacuuming carpet or mopping floors due to some physical restrictions - another worker will have to do that part over the weekend. I had to make up a grocery list and a menu - that takes a lot of thinking for me - doing it for a group home can be challenging. The office area is in the basement and there was high humidity today. I could really feel the effects on my body from my hard day as soon as I got home from work.

DJ...i found out a long time ago you can't help someone if they don't want help and of course they know what is best for them. i watched a friends significant other just waste away because when they moved it made them breath harder so they didn't do much movement and well, they have passed away since then. the funny thing about this person was he thought he knew what everyone else should be doing to help themselves with their health, but never his own health. it is hard to watch them, but if you say anything then they get mad and upset with you.

GrandmaKaren...i bet you felt good after your shower and washing your hair. i bet you felt like a new woman with your massage! it does sound like it could be very relaxing.

MaryBeth...enjoy your massage when you go..i bet you can't wait for next week for that massage.

you girls getting those massages probably are relaxing. enjoy.

i have found out that if i don't keep moving i stiffen up. i will push myself through some pain, because i know i need to get the work done. i have also found out that i watch my carbs and i don't eat much sweets or use sugar. if i do eat sweets i feel the pain more with my arthritis. i felt the pain in my knees yesterday and i think it was due to me standing in one place on a cement floor even though there was a rubber mat under my feet. i even notice when the humidity changes from a lower humidity to a higher humidity or vice versa my knees ache.

the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. Colossians 3:14-15a

Yes, massages are wonderful. I don't know how you got it for such a good price. My first one hour session was $50.00 from someone who is cheaper than most therapists; I'm going back again next week and it will be $55.00 for 45 minutes. Any type of body therapy is good - I've had reflexology treatments once in a while too. And something called "Trager" therapy (gentle rocking motions). It is unfortunate that all the things that are very beneficial to the good of our health has to cost so much money.

Do you know I have never had a massage? I even used to work as a nail technician/manicurist eons ago once and a co-worker in the salon was a massage therapist. Here I have two friends that are!

Enjoy!!!!

I do believe it is important to keep moving as much as possible. Sitting around does not do anything to improve the arthritic conditions. Sure we need to sit down or lie down when we are in pain, but we also need to remember to get up once in a while and move. I have found a fun exercise class to help me - it is called 'pound down' - sit down exercises with lots of upper arm movements more so than legs and all done to popular music, or some golden oldies! I was pretty tired today and debated whether or not to go, but once I got there I felt better. It was a small class, just three of us so no judgments - just lots of fun for about an hour.

OK. I got up & moved around a little. I vacuumed the bedroom, did some laundry & dishes. I am having less pain. I still take my meds but not moving is not helping me, especially since I live alone & have no one to help me get up from bed & chair. I try to move every few hours... LOL.

Going to take a shower & shampoo my hair now.

Hoping you are getting some relief.

Have to say I find it encouraging when someone says it might be because they are not moving much. I know my pain increases if I get to where I'm not moving enough.

I have a family member who refuses to acknowledge that exercise/movement, eating healthier (foods that are less inflammatory, etc.) will help. They have quit even trying to exercise ... they are losing mobility now ... their only 'option' they choose is to take more and more pain pills and sit back down/lay back down. They are having to get assistance from their spouse now to get out of bed because of the pain.

They won't 'listen' to anything I have to say ... have come to the conclusion their 'diagnosed conditions' are just that and incurable - it's old age/dna, etc. nothing can be done...their only option(s) is to take pain pills. A couple of years ago they were walking and swimming. Now they've given up.

It's taken me a while to 'give up' trying to suggest anything to them at all anymore ... and just accept this is how it's going to be where they are concerned. It's very hard because I love them very much and hate to see them go this direction.

My daughter gave me a product called DEEP RELIEF. It is a roll on made by YOUNG LIVING. I have used it & my son in law uses it regularly. I just rub it on the back of my neck.

Daughter said it sells like crazy & is often on a wait list.

Funny you mention essential oils! I was just looking at some online the other day ... I've never used them for my 'pains' ... just for aromatherapy and my 'buggy' spray ... I found some (a blend) I might buy ... need to wait a few weeks for checks to come in. Do you happen to know what your SIL uses?

I understand trying to figure out what one can do too! Today I've been trying to do a variety of things - gardening, some heavier housework, hung laundry/brought in ... it about killed me. Our day was hot ... then humidity came in ... now we're getting sprinkles. I was trying to finish knitting the wedding purse and when that humidity hit - well it was even uncomfortable knitting with crochet thread! I did get it done ... washed and blocked ... tomorrow all I have to do is thread ribbons through and wrap it up with a card. Thank goodness my hands weren't bothering me with pain ... they sometimes do when I knit a lot.

My left hip is really causing me some trouble. I had a fall on July 3rd so I thought it is probably time to get on the ball and get going to the doctor for a referral to the orthopedic specialist. Got sent for x-rays and now awaiting a call from the specialist for an appointment. Now using my cane when I am out and about which hopefully will prevent me from any more falls.
It's hard to know just how much I can do at home - I tried doing some housework today - am still recovering from carpal tunnel surgery - It did not take much to make me have to take a break in between the household duties. The weather is changing too - we are headed for a couple of days of very humid temperatures starting tomorrow but I can feel it gradually coming this way today. Trying not to turn the central air back on until tomorrow so am hoping that it is still cool enough through the night for sleeping.

I'm not handling things well since I fell on my knees ... having a lot of pain. I'm using pain cream but trying to avoid pain pills ... I just hate to take them. I want to be 'moving' more ... exercising ... but am going to have to do chair exercises. Just tending to the garden today made my pain flare up!

Don't mean to sound 'cranky' about it - but I am! ha!

Not sure what happened last night but I could not get to sleep. I took my elavel, muscle relaxer, 2 melatonin & an ativan. Still awake at 5 am so took a second ativan & rubbed lavender lotion on my arms &finally got to sleep for a few hours.

My pain level was low most of the day so I had not taken as much pain meds. Would that do it?

I hope you get some sleep going forward!

I got to the place where it was so painful at night ... if I woke up at all or moved the pain prevented me from getting back to sleep easily. I finally tried putting a 2" dense foam topper on the bed ... it helped sooooooooooooooooooo much! It's firm enough to not get 'buried' in but offered just enough cushion to help ease some of my pain if I'm moving around/turning over. I'm sleeping more hours straight through now. Don't know if this suggestion could help anyone else but worked for me to a large degree.

I got some walking in at a community garage sale. My visit with rheumy dr went ok. She said I have arthritis in both hands, feet & knees. My feet & legs have been really painful lately. I start a new med tonight. I should help me to get a pain free sleep. I hope it does.

A sit down dance and pound class - that sounds like FUN! Wish I could join you.

Today it's raining ... I exercise out on our lanai as we currently live in a motor home and space is soooooooooooooo limited inside. I am determined to try it indoors today ... doing a Walk Away the Pounds dvd or tai chi ... I may have just 'enough' space in front of my kitchen sink to do it ... maybe. I may end up 'marching' in place more than one would want but I'll be moving! At least I won't have to be concerned about over extending myself - ha!

thanks for the encouragement DJ. It helps to get into some upper body exercises - yesterday I went to a sit down exercise class (dance and pound) - pound is exercise with plastic drum sticks using the arms and tapping to music. It was fun. I just had to adapt anything that involved moving the legs side to side or lifting up and down. I quite enjoyed it.

I'm also dealing with sleep apnea and carpal tunnel. Seems like a lot to handle for me and I am getting a bit overwhelmed with all the medical attention. However, I am seeking to have the best care for my body in whatever way works for me.

Marybeth - I hope your next session on Friday is even more helpful and with continued therapy you ARE able to avoid hip surgery.

Today was my birthday so I took 'off' from doing any gardening, yard work and exercising which can be painful and I knitted most of the day ... and now my hands are 'acting up' - ha! But that's not as bothersome or painful as my knees get so it's bearable.

I'm hoping with getting back into exercising and movement I can also strengthen my leg muscles ... I know we all need to keep moving for things to improve. I have a sister 10 years older who has given up trying and she is getting steadily more non-functional as the months go by. I'm afraid by year end she'll be in a wheelchair.

Went for my first physiotherapy today. Yes, the bursitis is really flared up so they need to work on relaxing and strengthening my leg muscles. They used some kind of rolling thing today that really hurt but told me it would make me feel better than when I first arrived - and I suppose it did help somewhat. Then they applied heat and that felt good on the leg. Next visit is on Friday - need me to go in twice a week. I may add in some massage treatments at some point. I am a bit of a challenge - working with both arthritis and bursitis in the same leg. Just hoping that I can avoid having to get another hip replaced!

Today, I am just trying to stay positive and hope for the best. I go back to ortho doc next Thursday for a second follow up from surgery and maybe he can give me some advice on maybe some physical therapy for the knee.

Lots of Freeze It and tylenol today!

Last weekend my left leg and hip were in such awful pain - I wasn't sure about getting around that day but just kept on going. went to the clinic on Monday and was advised that my pain is due to both bursitis and the osteoarthritis. Got a script for physiotherapy to see if they can give me exercises to strengthen the muscles in the leg. Go figure, when I had my first appointment for an assessment, they cancelled due to the physiotherapist calling in sick! Now I have to wait until next week. So I am just using A535 rub and taking Advil. I do want to get out and exercise but when the pain gets bad it is a difficult thing to do. I just keep moving to the best of my ability because it is not good to just lay around and do nothing.

I am not handling it well. I have fibro in addition to arthritis. So tired of all the pain. I may need a different med....Beginning to think I need to change my name to Princess Karen.

JUDITHROXANA.I have recently had surgery on my knee, the third one, for about the same thing. I was hoping for relief for the pain, but I haven't been that lucky. My knee doesn't feel much better at all. When I read your post, I thought I was reading my own words. I am a bit depressed about all this too. Too much pain, not being able to exercise or do what I want to do, and just feeling like I can't do anything.

Maybe we can find something together that we can do to help us out.

JUDITHROXANA...so sorry to hear you are having such a rough time with everything. i honestly think being in so much pain makes a person handle the tiniest things like they are something huge.

i have bone on bone in right knee and left knee is still half good there. i learned this past Christmas season and seedling season what a difference it makes to watch carbs and that includes eating sweet things and bread (which i am a huge carb eater and loved bread so much)...when i worked Christmas season (i'm self employed seedling nursery and Christmas tree farmer)...i had something sweet for the employees for morning break along with coffee or tea for them. i did indulge daily on having at least half a serving of this sweet treat. i did notice the pain i had in my knees and i could hardly move towards the end of the work day. this spring when processing seedlings i had the sweets for the employees, but i did not partake of the sweets and i did notice i didn't have the pain i had before and i did watch my carb intake also. i think this made a big difference for me, but i do think you have some inflammation in your knees and you need to have that addressed.

i'm not a dr. or a nurse all i can speak on is what i have been through in my own life.
i didn't have heat in my knee, but it kept locking up on me that i couldn't bend knee at times or the opposite (not being able to straighten my knee) without being in terrible pain that i would scream out loud. i did go to the dr. that does surgery on knees for arthritis and they gave me a cortisone shot in my knee (that was over a year ago) and that has been the only shot i had in that knee and i have not had surgery either. i really do think my diet change made a big difference.

you do need to have the knees looked at and if the mobic doesn't help you need to call the dr. and talk with them about that and tell them the problems you are having...if they say they can't do anything for you a question you need to ask yourself...should i go somewhere else for a second opinion? another thing i have learned, because i do have carpel tunnel syndrome. i was told when i get up in the morning, because i haven't used my wrist yet that on bad days i should put warm compresses on my wrist, then when i did use my wrist and it is bothering me to put ice on it. this worked for me.

please think of questions you can ask at therapy and write them down so you don't forget and see what they have to say to you.

we are here for you and please let me know how you make out with therapy and what they have to say to you. as i said earlier we are here for you and it does help just to write about your problems to someone and know that someone does care.

your are doing it right by going to your primary dr. and have blood lab work done and asking questions at therapy as they hopefully can tell you in what direction you might need to go.

please try and have a good day. you are not alone on your path with arthritis and your weightloss.

hugs to you and please give your daughter a hug and a kiss from me.
give your hubby a hug and a kiss from you.

I am so sorry you are in such pain. My pain level has been high too. Damp weather, overworked, & new meds = fibro flare.

Are you taking vitamin D3? I take it. also take curcumin/tumeric & bosweilla for my arthritis. I have very little knee pain since taking those supplements.

My daughter got me an essential oil called DEEP RELIEF. Seems to be helping. I know it can be depressing. Talk to your dr about medication & a counseling session. I hope you get help soon.

It has been 5 months since my acl and meniscus repair surgery and I was told by the ortho that I have arthritis on my knees. He prescribed Mobic and told me there is nothing else he could do. Mobic makes me nauseous, and does not help much with pain. I lost 10 pounds this month. I have a 3 year old daughter and this pain makes it impossible to care for her. I am still working on losing more weight but it takes time. I am depressed, hungry, can't sleep. I am also vitamin D deficient. I will try to go to my primary's office to get my blood taken. My knees are feeling hot all the time and flaring up. I ice all the time. I will be going to therapy on Tuesday to see what they say. I am so sad to have an incurable degenerative disease. My worst fear has come true. Help! I also think I need mental help. I am crying all the time. My husband is already sick of it and my baby is so sad to see me in pain all the time and asks me to stop crying.

I'm worth it!!!

Ground Flax seed, flax seed oils can be used like omega 3 oils,
alternative to polyunsaturated and trans oils. Ground Flax seeds
can be sprinkled on any foods (yogurt, cooked vegetables) to
provide same nutrients.
I drizzle flaxseed oil over cooked fish, mixed fresh salads to
provide low calorie flavor. I mix flaxseed oil into chickpea spread
with other antioxidant vegetables for smoother flavor.

Ann, I have just discovered avocado. What do you do with flax seed? I take 5000 mg vit d on most days. I have my level checked yearly & although my number is improving, I am still below my goal. I have been reading about Vit. D & it seems most of us are low especially as we age.

Just joined today, March 31st. I am happy to find discussions re: slow weight loss due
to medical condition. Arthritis is new to me. Now in my early 60's, I find arthritis pain can be exacerbated with weight distribution and weather. My best supplement is NSAIDs and physical therapy training.

Recently I have experimented with Flaxseed, avocados and Vit D3 supplements.
Also eating lighter foods - more produce, leaner proteins: I am a big fan of rotisserie; for protein multigrains, non dairy beverages: Cashew milk - only 30 calories!!

My mother had chron's disease too, so I do understand a know a little about this as well. She actually had two surgeries to remove parts of her intestines. I am sorry that you have to deal with this as well.

A friend told me about a rub called Tiger Balm or something like that.

i don't take anything for my arthritis other than the fish oil and a few other vitamins. having Crohns the colon doesn't absorb like it should...plus several years ago i had 2/3 rds of my large intestine removed and now it absorbs all the fat....colon seems to be working much better in some ways. i'm fortunate that my knees don't seem to swell, they just hurt and don't want to bend or straighten up at times/ putting boots on and off wreck havoc on my knees and i do notice bending over for items on the floor even vacuuming and bending over to clean under appliances is hard on knees. i have not tried any creams or anything for my arthritis. i'm fortunate that i can handle the pain, which doesn't seem to bad many of the days.

everyone have a fun day.

I take fish oil, too. I was using a rub on my feet because that is a part of my body that need extra pain relief. I have not used it lately & they are really hurting. I will get back with the name of the product.

I have been taking fish oil supplements for years, and I also take supplements that are supposed to help with OA too. I am going to have to make myself get up and move more, I guess. I just get frustrated when my knee swells up and hurts and my day is done. It is going to take some adjustment learning to deal with my diseases.

Has anyone found any relief with any creams or rubs?

have you tried or maybe you do take fish oil. i have been taking that for years and i also give it to my 14 year old Aussie dog and it does seem to help me and her deal with our arthritis. i don't walk my 14 year old Aussie as it is still hard for her, but she does get small walks around the house outside daily...she gets what works for her. me...i have bone on bone and probably need a knee replacement...had a cortisone shot last spring and that was the one and only one. i really think the fish oil helps with everything. hubby has a worker who has arthritis in his knees and he is over weight and..i noticed him rubbing his knees during our retail Christmas season and i knew what his problem was so i recommended for him to try the fish oil..we are seasonal farmers that need help only twice a year so this is the first time for the year harvesting seedlings to be processed for sale and this particular worker told hubby to tell me thank you for recommending the fish oil as he started taking it after i recommended it and he really feels it has helped him.

i also find i have to move my knees because it helps to keep them working better also so a walk works for me. don't over do it. your knees will tell you if it is too much. start out slow and gradually increase your distance. so glad i motivated you to walk. i so enjoy my walks as i live where we have the 4 seasons and i so love just seeing nature change with each season. i don't know if i have a favorite season, maybe the season we are in at the time. Panda and i enjoyed walking in the snow and when it was snowing. when the wind chills were brutal we sat that day out. the weather is so beautiful today super warm and sunny and i'm ready for a walk or maybe more than one.

i have found out sitting too long or standing too long in one place really wrecks havoc on my knees as they don't want to straighten up if sitting too long and when standing too long in one place knees forget how to bend. unfortunately i will be standing in one place way too long while processing seedlings as i will be standing at a table grading them and when break time comes my knees are rebelling. i suffer through the pain most days with out taking anything as i hate to take too much tylenol and i can't take any of the other anti inflammatory's due to my health history.

please let me know how you make out and how much enjoyable your walks are. hugs.

I am not handling my RA or osteoarthritis very well at all right now. I must admit, I feel a little defeated. I need to move to lose some lbs. but can't due to this knee issue I am having right now, which is not helped by my excess weight! I go to my doctor tomorrow afternoon to see if he thinks I need to go back and see a surgeon. Let's hope something will get figured out.

i do notice when it is super cold my knees don't want to work so well and are painful...pulling boots on and off all day long don't help on the knee joints...i usually scream out in pain when pulling off boots as it pulls on the knee no matter what.

i try to walk when i can as it does keep my joints moving and i believe it helps with the pain.

will see what today brings with the cold, wind and snow.

hope everyone is doing good and hope your day is pain free or reduced pain...try and move as you can.

I'm having so much pain from my shoulder which most likely is referred pain from my cervical arthritis and pinched nerves. The only med that helps is an NSAID but I have gastritis and GERD, unfortunately from Aleve that I took last yr when I fell. It's hard because I get no sleep. The pain is so much worse at night.

when the weather was very cold like in the single numbers my knees ached and were stiff....i think i may have caused some of the problem myself by bending over and scraping and the froze ice out of my horses hay bin. we wet her hay down to help prevent a form of winter colic where horses don't consume enough water so soaking hay down adds more water to their diet. so with the cold temps the water freezes to her rubber hay tub and i clean up this everyday and i can't knee so i have to bend over and i think i stretch my knee and i need to try and bend differently so as to not stretch the knee joint. today is warmer and i didn't have to scrape tub hubby did it. i'm going to get a much missed walk in before the weather turns nasty with in the next 2 days. i maybe able to walk tomorrow also...i'll have to wait on the weather.

My left knee and shin are aching tonight - probably due to the weather change. We are getting ice pellets mixed with snow. Quite a change from the mild winter we've had prior to today.

i know it is silly that if you exercise you hurt, but it really does help. this has been the best wreath season for me for not having as much pain other than standing most of the day with out getting to sit, but my friend had walked all summer and fall and i walked in the beginning of wreath season until it got way to hectic for me. i think this has helped me to endure what i ahve been through. today was a painful day towards the end of working then when i got home all i wanted to vegetate and have me knees bent for a change. i also take one fish oil capsule and vitamin C and i think that does help some with the arthritis. i'm hoping that isn't in my mind and it is helping me. got to get back at making wreaths on Monday. need to go feed the cats and off to bed for me. emoticon emoticon

Did my 10 minutes of exercise today using Spark people video and thought my knees had knifes in them. Have to get used to the idea that if I want my pain to be less I need to exercise them more, kind of a hard concept. It hurts if I don't and hurts if I do. My pain level today is about a 6, going to keep moving forward. emoticon

How is everyone one doing with their pain. i know the weather has been changing and could be making you more painful.

today i guess i'm about a 5. i'm tired and under stress and the weather has been goofy. it has been foggy all day for about the last 3-4 days. at first i said it was hazy like when there is lots of humidity (in Pennsylvania where i live), but it is fog. i get to sleep in tomorrow (i hope) and that should help with the pain. when i wake up in the mornings i can hardly move. while working...standing for long periods my knees don't want to bend and the when i sit my knees don't want to straighten up. hoping sleeping in tomorrow will help with my pain.

My arthritis has been very debilitating lately, both of knees hurt, my left hip and back hurt pretty constant. I do live up about 20 stairs which is good because it makes me move some. I want to start walking on the tred mill as I believe it will help if I can get some form of exercise. The cold weather in Wyoming does not help it one bit, lol.
