Another team that I am on has some great strategies to help struggling eaters, which is what I definitely am right now. I'll share two today: 1) the first two bites are the most critical and satisfying so the idea is to take the first two bites of anything - slowly! If it isn't something super special then don't take any more bites, just leave the rest. 2) Adopt a '1/2' rule and challenge yourself to eat only 1/2 of what you would normally eat.

For some unknown reason, these two ideas really resonate wih me and I'm going to do my best to put them into action for the next few weeks - hopefully that might help get me through the holidays.

Want to share your own strategies....

I have been MIA for a while now - - - My son has been diagnosed with some neurological issues and it's taking everything I have to shuttle him between Dr's and specialists and therapists. In order to accomodate all the appointments we have also moved him to home-school status so he is here with me every day. I do check in from time to time. I wistfully wish I could be more active but I know this is where my energy needs to be focused right now. Hope everyone is enjoyng the holiday season!

I haven't been a very active member on the team pages... but, I do come by and read the pages occasionally (is that lurking or stalking? do you have to know someone to stalk them?)

since I joined SparkPeople: I lost 30 pounds the first year, was less than 5 pounds from my goal weight, then gained about 10 of it back. I have been holding steady down 20 for a while... need to lose the 15 pounds that I have left. When I joined, I was attempting to work out some on my own - I have run 37 races since I started including 2 marathons. I will run my 3rd marathon in the morning. I also do a fitness bootcamp 3 mornings a week. If you had asked me 3 years ago if I would get up at 5 am to workout - I would have laughed hysterically at you... If you had told me that I would be running my 3rd marathon - I would have had you committed...

At this point I am willing to try anything!! I actually use applecider vinegar for nausea. 1 tsp and the nausea is gone! Most people think that it upsets your stomach more, but it doesn't!

When I get home from work I am going to try the gargle you recommend. I've done the salt and warm water gargles to no avail, so why not this one!

Thanks!

WofG - now this is going to sound either silly, or stupid - but it works for me whenever I think I'm getting a cold. I put 1 tbsp of apple cidar vinegar into a cup of warm water and gargle. Doesn't matter if I gag, or if I swallow some of the water - a little gagging is better for me than being sick! This ALWAYS works - usually at the first sign of a scratchy throat I start gargling - several times a day, for 2 or 3 days. Are you brave enough to give it a try? If, for some unknown reason, I don't take my own advice and try to nip it in the bud, then gargling with this magic potion helps with recovery. Just sayin' ...! Good luck - get better soon!

I have been battling a cold now for going on 4 weeks. I have coughed so much I have lost my voice. To say I need to get motivated is an understatement. It takes so long to get over colds and such now. Being diabetic sucks!

Enough of the pity party. Time to get it in gear. I will sweat this cold out! Without over pushing myself, this week will be a strength training week. Cardio pushes me into coughing fits right now, so I think slow and easy strength is the way to go.

We're having our second "Indian Summer" of this Fall season - and even I can't find a reason to be down in the dumps when our weather is so gorgeous!! But I know that winter is just around the corner, so my challenge will come sooner or later. I hope later!!

I'm having fairly good success with the Eat to Live plan by Dr. Joel Fuhrman - although I do make some adjustments here and there. For accountability, I've joined the 100 Days to Weight Loss team - and we have just finished our first week. Not too late, if you'd like to join. Just let me know - although I'm not a leader there I do know how to get you in!!!

"Lurking" - I love that word! That is totally what I have been doing and I need to participate more as well.

I have to push past my comfort zone of ordering out for pizza and burritos and become comfortable with cooking. I love the variety of choices on SparkRecipe.com, but need to become more diligent about using it.

I also need to move more. So far, nothing has motivated me to get off my rear end. I have a gym membership, exercise dvds, and a treadmill, so I have no excuse for not doing something.

All in all, it is time for a lifestyle overhaul. Now, where to start...

I've been lurking...I admit it. I need to lurk less and participate more!

It's been a rough year for me, but I have managed to losed 31 pounds since I re-started Spark in June of 2011. For the past few months I have been bouncing up and down with the same 10 pounds, but I am determined that I will beat them into submission! I still have 121 pounds to go, but I know I can do this. I do feel better just having the weight I have lost gone, and I know it's just going to keep getting better.

I need to redefine my activity levels, since I have started a new job position in my company and no longer have a private office. I now share a room with 11 people, and I am not comfortable doing my wall pushups in here like I used to be in my old office. So a bit of rescheduling of my workouts is in order.

All in all, I am making progress, as my Huddle today states, and I am pleased with this. Happy Sparking!

I agree! Toward a healthier end, I am committing to a few things that I will post here for accountability

1- My new answer for anything that distracts me from dealing with my son's issues or my home and health goals is - - - " No, I am overcommitted right now. Thanks for thinking of me though and be sure to ask me again in the future."
2- I WILL make the time to increase my health in some way EACH AND EVERY DAY
3 - I will choose a positive affirmation to use each time life kicks me in the teeth again. (because, lets face it, it's GOING to happen again and I CANNOT continue to allow it to derail me)

just got my computer back with a new hard drive that working MUCH faster than the old one! WooHoo!

How is everyone? From a health perspective I haven't made one bit of progress. Life has been kicking us in the teeth with every nasty turn of events it can muster so I am just barely hanging on, I have one good cry a day (at least) and then I get busy dealing with the chaos.

through it all two good things were realized - I didn't going on grazing binges each time and I never craved a Dr Pepper which used to be my supreme way of dealing with stress. Small victories count!

Yeah, let's get a new picture for the team. We're all kind of renewing our resolve and it'll be kind of symbolic of that.
I, too, did very well for so long. I have gained back some of the weight, but instead of getting down on myself, I just need to get motivated to relose that and keep going. Most important, to be as healthy as I can be.
Best Impossible, keep up the good work. You have a lot going on. (Totally understand what you're going through with your son, too.) 10 minutes a day is a great way to make sure we're getting exercise. You've motivated me to try that. (Many times, once I get going, I can extend it, or sometimes I'll do it 2x a day, but hey, here I go again....Maybe that's why I have trouble.)
Remember. A pound = 4 sticks of butter, so even 1/4 pound is a success.
Most important: We're all still here. We know this works. And we have each other.
Let's hear it for US and marching (or walking, or limping) through the rest of 2012 and into 2013!

I am getting caught up today and just found the string.

Nice to get to know everyone again. Here is my brief bio; I am looking down the barrel of my 48th bday and I have a son who turns seven just four days before I hit it. He has some behavioral challenges that we are finding out aren't ADHD and an impulse disorder, they are gifted kid with an anxiety disorder in the wrong learning environment. I have been at his school every day since he started, which is just coming to an end this week - but it derailed any progress toward my health goals. I am an RN recovering from some hyperextended ligaments and tendons that I got while working (we haven't ruled out knee surgery yet). My husband is self employed, finishing a masters degree and is incredibly supportive, but not pushy, about my health goals.

I have over 100lb to lose. I have made a lot headway with learning about nutrition and general health issues. I have tackled some Emotional Eating issues and still have some to deal with. I too have only given up soda in my daily diet (mine wasn't diet - it was the real deal). It was my emotional drug of choice and I have been off the sauce for over 2 and a half years now. I currently struggle with routine exercise but it is my new focus goal as I move forward. i have to be careful because of the leg injury but I love to both walk and swim. What I don't like to do is sweat! I have to learn to get over it, embrace it, revel in it.... whatever it takes. I have gained back some of the weight I have lost.

I consider this a lifestyle change and not a diet. I haven't eliminated anything except soda. I do indulge in a higher calorie meal once about every 10 days on our date nights. I have found that I get full faster, I crave natural foods rather than drive through junk, I listen to my body better and try to eat only when hungry and not when the clock tells me to eat.

What I have found that works well - do a minimum of 10min of exercise a day. Log everything that goes into the mouth on the nutrition tracker. Stay in touch with the team for encouragement and motivation.

~Andi~

Hello Class Mates:

Here's a thought: When I looked at our Spark Team logo today, I began to wonder if that picture of the Big, Fat, obviously Lazy Bear is sending a mixed message to us as class mates? Certainly the bear represents how I feel much of the time, so I wonder if it has the same effect on you?

Is it time for a change? Well, it is time for a change for us personally, but I'm wondering if it is time for us to change the docile bear logo for something more robust and motivating?

What do you think???

Do it, NOW!

In my Biggest Loser Challenge they asked us to take Before pictures. OMG. That's my new incentive. I am really comitted to tracking my food. That's what helped me lose weight before. And, I can see that strength training is what I need to get firm. So, I really think I am back on track. Here's to us all having a great year!

Would you like to share what kind of a 'plan' or not you are using to lose weight and get healthy? I'll start by sharing that I try to avoid carbs - this is easier said than done, but I feel so much better when I stick with more vegetables and protein. One of the teams I'm on is the Eat to Live (ETL), patterned after the book by Dr. Joel Fuhriman. I don't have the vigorous weight loss that some of the teammates have, but I'm guessing that is because I don't pursue the plan with the same vigor as them. Could it be true that we get out of it what we put into it?

What is your plan? How is your progress? What could you do better? I'm hoping to gain a lot of good ideas from you!!!

Do it, NOW!

My weight loss has been minimal, but I've definitely gained in terms of strength, both in physical strength and strength of character. I've adopted a "never give up and never give in" attitude - It doesn't matter how many times I fall, it only matters that I get up. I'll get where I need to be, slower than most...but I will get there! I believe in myself. If you don't, you have already lost the battle.

Golfchick, you hit the nail right on the head when you said "Its been slow" ... I can certainly agree with that. But today I'm celebrating a slight dip in the scale and even though it is slow and miniscule, I'll take it! I also like your take on 'cheat days' - in fact, you gave us all a lot of insight about making a lifestyle change. I hope to hear more about it as we go along.

Whatever works for each of us might work for the rest of us. How about it, class mates: Want to share? My simple sharing today is water, water, water! The elixir of health!

Do it, NOW!

It's been slow, but I'm about 5 lbs from my goal. There are 60 lbs less of me. I am stronger. I am fitter. I am healthier. I'm 45 years old and in the best shape of my life.

I made a lifestyle change. It is one that I can LIVE with. I did not 'diet'. The only thing I gave up is soda. As I only drank diet to start with, it wasn't about the calories. It was about the chemicals. Since I gave up pop, I can no longer tolerate the taste of fake sugars. If I want sweet, I will have REAL sugar. FYI, I also have not had a migraine since giving up fake sugar... conincidence?? I think not!!

I eat. I eat often. I eat real food. I still eat cheese and chocolate, just in moderation. I don't have 'cheat days'. That would imply that I'm doing something wrong.

I work out almost daily. Cardio and weight training. I love both. I need both. No, you will NOT get 'bulky'. I hear that concern from so many women. In order to get 'bulky' you would have to add hormones to your diet/supliments and lift MASSIVE amounts of weight. Strength training will help you in every day life. Muscles will help you to walk faster, stand taller, breath deeper. Muscle mass helps you to burn more calories, which requires you to EAT MORE FOOD!!!

I have discovered a new sport and that will require me to work more on my strength training. I am competing in Scottish Highland Games. My concerns going forward are not about gaining back the weight. My concerns are about getting my strength and speed to a point where I can compete. If you don't know about Higland Games, here is a link that describes the different events www.nasgaweb.com/getstart.asp

It wasn't easy. It isn't easy. It is hard work. But you have to remember... YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!

Patriots, Red Sox, Keto, Zumba, Highland Games are my passions. I may live in Oregon but my heart still roots for Boston!!

I just started my 2 week free trial of SparkCoach. It seems like a good way to get back on track. It's not in my budget to pay for it after the trial, but I thought it was good to take advantage of the opportunity.

I'm aiming for 20 pounds by our anniversary. And, then keeping it off for good. I'm trying to really focus on life balance and figuring out a way to eat healthily for the rest of my life. I've definitely got to figure out a better way to deal with stress than to eat!

I've been walking 45 minutes a day with my husband, and running once a week with a group. But I really need to add back in the strength training. (Yes, you can run and gain weight.)

Good luck to us all!

You know, I'll try just about anything once...twice if it feels good! LOL

Lilybelle, I'm going to go to the store and grab some gelatin and some tang tomorrow morning. I'll give this a try until I run out of the stuff, then go a week or so without it to see if it worked at all for me. Thanks for the suggestion...it can't hurt and might help so down the hatch!

Mary Jane - about your arthritis, here's the best advice I can offer you - remembering that my mother took a 'magic potion' for her arthritis when I was one of those 'know-it-all-teenagers who didn't pay much attention" - when genetically induced arthritis began to kick in, I started to mix up my mothers magic brew and it is amazing how much it helps the aches and pain of arthritis. Every morning I mix one-half to 1 envelope of Knox gelatin with about a teaspoon of dry Tang powered drink mix in 1 cup of cold water. Wait for the gelatin to 'bloom' or soften, give it a good stir and down the hatch. It really works for me, and might be worth a try for you. It might help you with your goal of "Nanny, nanny, boo boo - guess I went and fooled you"!!

May we all strive to be she-warriors!!

Do it, NOW!

My return was of course prompted by LilyBelle8, who is determined to get whoever remains of this original group together. I think it is a great idea! I've noticed MOST "joined the week of" groups are inactive, having moved on to groups of like-minded or same interest peoples. I know I did. I'm most active (and a leader) on the San Antonio Spark team. It's an active team online and in real life. I've worked hard to help make it so.

My progress has been abysmal in terms of weight loss. I've gained and lost the same 10 pounds over and over. My progress in terms of personal growth, education, and motivation to keep on fighting the good fight for my health has been terrific. I've been diagnosed with multiple disorders and diseases over the last three years. I've had a heart attack and a stent placement. I've nursed my mother through the last years of her life until her very last breath 16 months ago. I'm still caring for my Dad, who has cancer and a blood disorder. I've become grandma to David. I've formed a team of walkers from our local spark team who have been training together on Saturdays to walk a half marathon for the last 7 - 8 months. We will walk our full 13.1 miles together on Saturday, January 12th - the day after my 3 year Sparkversary!

My goal right now is very lofty. I have 32 more pounds to lose by December 1st in order to be in ONEderland when I compete in the Dirty Girl Mud Run coming to San Antonio that day. I've never done one of these Warrior-type obstacle courses before. Last year I dedicated myself to facing fears and reaching further and between tower-climbing and ziplining last year and the Mud Run and the Half Marathon coming up I think I'm doing just that. Now if I could just push away from the plate and eat better...that's my goal....hit ONEderland FINALLY before my 3rd anniversary.

p.s. The pain management doctor and rheumatologist have both told me that I probably won't be able to do the obstacle course nor walk 13 miles given my back condition and degree of arthritis, along with recurrent stress injuries to one foot and COPD. My other goal is to be able to see them after both goals are met and give them a heartfelt "nanny nanny boo boo, guess I went and fooled you!"

Hi Everyone!
To say i'm limping along would actually be most accurate with how I feel today(literally).
I've been having so many physical issues...blown out knee & and back that isn't coorperating. That actually has been my biggest motivator lately. I want to just exist without pain! I figure if I can take the 50+ pounds off my body parts will start working again.
I am a mom of 3 kiddos. I have 2 boys(7 &10) and a girl(17 months). I work fulltime as a Systems Engineer for the State(NY). I put all my weight on with pregnancies. The first pregnancy was the toughest with an 80 pound gain, but lost all of it. 2nd one was moderate 40 pound gain, but only lost 20...then this last one I'm up about 10 pounds, but who is counting? So basically that all adds up over time.
I can't bring myself to put the ticker where my actual "weight" is, because 200+ pounds is so embarassing to me for some reason! So my goal is to lose about 50 pounds. It's not even the weight, I would be fine if I was a size 10 & 400 pounds, don't care about the weight number, care about the size number. So really I'm shooting for a size 10 :)
Thanks for the re-energizing of the team! :)

LilyBelle, you have to be a leader or co-leader to make a topic sticky.

For now, and until I can figure out how to make this a 'sticky topic' (I think I have to be a co-leader and have applied to do that but it will be another day or so to get set up), how about if we use this 'Return and Report' topic to re-introduce ourselves to each other (Return) and then share our progress (or lack of emoticon ). This will be the Report and let's post as often as we feel the need, but at least once per week. There are 16-18 weeks left until our 3rd 'class reunion' and wouldn't it be great if we could all UNITE AND CONQUER!!

I'm looking forward to getting reacquainted with many of you - meeting others for the first time - and really taking advantage of the synergy that comes from a group effort.

My Return is that I joined Spark People, hoping to lose 20 pounds. Have lost AND gained that much since joining, and have actually lost about 6 more pounds that I haven't gained back. I'm a live-alone widow, live in Idaho in the heart of the wild fires that are raging now, 5'3" tall and weigh 159 pounds (It almost hurts my psyche to even type those stats.)

My Report is that I want to lose 1 pound per week for as many weeks as it takes me to feel comfortable in my own skin. To do that I limit carbs, eat a lot of greens and beans (almost a vegetarian diet) try to drink 8-10 cups of water a day (this is really hard for me) and my exercise of choice is just plain walking.

Now, all of you who want to join in to this Return and Report topic, please jump right in. We all joined Spark People for very good reasons, which seemed do-able at the time. Well, we still have very good reasons, in fact maybe we have even better reasons now, and anything we want badly enough is do-able.

So - will you join us and Return and Report??

Do it, NOW!
