The concept of actual fasting is not the same as the Greek concept of nisteia which you are familiar with as an abstinence from meat, dairy, poultry, eggs etc. Starving the body will bring your metabolism into starvation mode by slowing down as if you are in the middle of some sort of famine, if this becomes habit, it becomes more and more difficult as the years progress to bring your metabolism back up to a more functional rate.

The truth of the matter is, if processed foods are restricted, if sugar and salt is lowered, and if we eat more fruits, vegetables and take in more water and less soda, our bodies naturally detoxify during elimination, sweat and sleep.

It's Holy Week here in Greece, which as you all know, is a time great fasting. But, what does that mean for our bodies. There are conflicting opinions on this topic, with some people believing it is absolutely necessary, especially for Americans who eat 51% of their food as processed, and others believing it slows metabolism and can cause weakness and harm. I have attached two contrasting articles below, to allow you to decide for yourself. Plus, of course, your PERSONAL experience is the most important for each individual.

But for us here in Greece, does this apply? (the 51% processed food?) I know my family eats only fresh fruits and vegetables and if it is not in season, we don't go for the frozen or the canned. We get our meats from the butcher and our fish either from the port or from the fish-monger. We are regular visitors to the "Laiki" or farmer's market, and most sweets are homemade.

But, this week, and indeed for some, the past 40 days, have included fasting. I thought I'd share a few articles on the topic and let you decide for yourself. I personally believe that fasting slows down the metabolic system. Let us know your experiences and opinions!
