I tried putting the device on my sock when I biked today and the calorie burn matched my heart rate monitor. Thanks so much for the idea.

I don't know maybe I'm missing the point....... I got mine and started wearing it.. I put it in my pocket of whatever I'm wearing..... I let mine do it's thing...... if I spend an hour on my gazelle I go to fitbit website and log activity gazelle 1 hour and the distance in miles and when I started....... if I walk my dogs for 30 mins I go to fitbit website and log activity walk/run, playing with animals, vigorous, only active periiods... I have zip and it doesn't record "sleep" so I log my sleeping periods....

I go to sp and log all my food and log water on both since water doesn't seem to cross back and forth....

other than now and then I had trouble with it updating the fitbit website with the proper number of steps from my zip..... I don't think I have any issues.......... it seems pretty simple or am I just making it seem more simple than it is?

Do you mean on the SP Fitness page?
If you do, then please take a look at the post before your post for an explanation of how FB calculates calories burned. This is completely different than how SP calculates calories burned ergo the warning. I find the FOOD PLAN on the FB site is a much better gauge of your current status. It is static and adjusts for your activity on a daily basis as opposed to SP gauging your activity on a weekly basis.

I got my fitbit friday. We have been camping and hunting and it already has given me the warning about burning to many calories. I put it on in the morning and take it off at night. Is this normal?

Here is how I answered your question on another topic Cat:

There appears to be a lot of confusion as to what the FITBIT ENTRY on your SparkPage Exercise tracker page encompasses. My understanding is that the number provided by FB includes all of your FAIRLY ACTIVE MINUTES and your VERY ACTIVE MINUTES. The Calories Burned number would be any calories you earned performing these activities. This would be in addition to your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) which is the amount of energy expended daily by your body while sleeping/at rest, i.e., light activity. Here is a BMR calculator to figure out what your daily figure is:

www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculato
r/

Adding your BMR to your Calories Burned would provide you with the number of calories you require to maintain your current weight. Now if you want to lose weight then you need to eat between 200-500 calories less that this daily figure (depending on how much weight you want to lose on a weekly basis).

I, too, want to log my actual cardio activities on SP and have created Groups that involve these activities but without any time/calories (I will usually list this information in the group's description). I also label my activities on the FB site.

I hope this answers your questions as to why the entry on your SP fitness log seems so high.

I hope this helps Cat. If not, please rely and we can continue the discussion.

Carol, I wear my Fitbit for Leslie Sansone DVDs and it works fine. It is not the Zip I hav though and I wear it on my waist band which is the best place to wear it.

I was wearing the zip on my bra, as the instructions say this is the best place. But I changed it, to wear on waistband of my clothing. Didn't matter where I wore it, no difference in the way it tracked today. I guess I'll walk to the DVDs without my Zip and use my Zip for other walking. Still kinda bummed, though.

Cat, I don't put in any types of walks or steps as the synching with your FB does that for you. If you input them, it will be like double counting them.

Question regarding how FB sync's miles in SP.
When I take a walk I record the miles and time it took in my exercise tracker as a walk.
At the end of the day I take those miles in steps along with all my steps for the day and enter then in my goals tracker.
So, these are two separate things.
FB takes my steps for the day and enters them in my SP fitness tracker. This isn't right as it doesn't separate walks from steps, thus the calorie count is off plus I can't keep track of actual walks.
Anyone have any comment on this?

Where are you wearing the zip? Your walking in place may not be enough movement to register a step on your zip.

I got my FitBit Zip tracker last week. It hasn't been working right. Today, I walked to a 'Walk Away The Pounds' DVD by Leslie Sansone. Walking using the DVD's I have is why I bought the Zip. Well, today I managed to do a half-mile (had back pain) and my Zip synced to the online dashboard and 'said' I took only 30 steps and walked 0.01 miles! I looked on the Dashboard and there's no way for me (or any of us?) to put in miles manually. So I'm figuring that my 'walking' to my walking DVD's isn't 'strenuous' enough (?) and therefore my steps aren't being counted properly. Very disappointed with this Zip.

I've been having trouble with my Zip sync'g with the website when it's getting close to the midnight cutoff and updating my info for the day......

I'll check the Zip to see if I've met my 10,000 step goal and if I haven't made it but I'm close I'll make up the extra steps on my gazelle or walk extra to get them..... then it doesn't want to interface and update the website and sp....

sometimes it will catch it up but there are times it never does.......

SLYSAM posted earlier in this topic the following. I think it will provide some perspective for your concern:

"MyLauren2, about your comment: "i think i have mine set up... no clue.. i see it on facebook but i am trying to figure out how i have burned 1085 calories sitting on my butt....magic sofa... gotta love it"

This is probably the most common question among new users and I think fitbit really should find a way to explain this on the box or on the start up paper. There are a certain amount of calories you burn just existing--your bmr (basal metabolism rate). Most calorie counting type plans will use this as a starting point and often minimum for your allowance--Spark actually does this too. There are a lot of formulas to estimate bmr--usually they use your height, weight, age and gender. There are some that uses lean body mass and not gender or age. And in real life there are many other factors, but those are the the more obvious ones. Most of those calories you see when you set your fitbit up and also first thing in the morning (another common new user question) are crediting you with a portion of your bmr from 12am until this time. For example, my bmr is usually a little less than 1200 calories, so if I stayed in bed all day I would still burn that many calories by the time the day is finished. Our brain and other organs require a lot of energy to function and for many it is something like 80% of our total calorie burn.

There is one exception related to the first day... I think the default setting on fitbit is to have "calorie estimation" turned on. If it is on, for times when you are not wearing the fitbit or it registers so little activity it seems like it is sitting on a table, it does add some light activity burn to your bmr. In most cases that is part of the first day assuming new users haven't turned that setting off. If it is off, the unworn time just registers as bmr. But most likely you probably burned more than that assuming you were doing some activity before you set up your fitbit. Really after a week or so that first partial day does not matter (the leader board uses 7 day totals). I've had a fitbit for a couple years and have no memory of that first day of stats or calorie burn. You can turn "calorie estimation" off if you prefer, usually it doesn't matter since when you do activity it overwrites it, I have it turned off mainly because if I spend a lot of time completely sedentary I just want it to credit me with bmr and I think that keeps my total calorie burn down a little lower."

I hope this addresses your concerns. If not let us know.

Okay I used my FitBit Zip for the first time today. Normally, I like to burn 1700 calories in a week. However, today, just with my walking to work, all the steps I took in work, and walking home, I burned 600 or so calories exercise wise and a total of 1600 or so calories overall. This seems like an awful lot, so I'm not sure if I should do more exercise and raise my calorie burned for the week range (which will raise my calories in gauge on the nutrition page)?

Yes it is cheaper than fitbit but only works if you are a mamber and has a $5 monthly charge, doen't tell you steps only % of daily target that it sets for you.

Winter, there is really only one time a day it "clears" and that should be just at 12am per the time zone you are set for. Then it immediately starts accumulating your steps, distance, calories, etc for the new 24 hour day. When it is blinking, it temporarily resets as that means you put it in stopwatch/timer mode but it accumulates from your activity in that time and when you turn off the timer it will show your new daily total so far. The timer has two purposes: to track sleep and to create an activity record if you want to see all the stats for a specific activity. The blinking stops if you push the button and hold it down for a couple seconds--which is actually what caused it to start.

The blinking is when it thinks you are sleeping.Hold the button down until it stops blinking. Hold it down again and it will start blinking again. I "track" my sleep in this manner.

I bought my first fit bit last Feb loved it, lost it tried WW new monitor hated it bought another fit it. Most important thing for me dispite some irregularities is that it makes me aware of how much I am actually doing. Love the daily chart of cal burned and activity levels at fit it.

FB does not have a customer service number rather you need to contact them via email. Here is the link:

The blinking may be an issue but the burning calories probably is not. The FB takes into account your BMR so it will display calories burned for just merely breathing.

RANCHGAL9 & IRISHGIRL3:
If you have set-up your sync to occur automatically then there is no need to click on the SEND FOOT TO FITBIT button. Doing so will cause the double entry you are both describing.

Here is the link to check if your FB is automatically syncing with SP:

www.sparkpeople.com/fitbit/connect.a
sp

IRISHGIRL3: I agree there are still some quirks with the sync but it does save a lot of time from having to enter all you foods manually, trust me, I have been there! :)

Hope this answers your question.

Here is what I do and it seems to be working for me.....

I post all of my food to spark people (when I post foods)
I wear my heart rate monitor while I am working out but I do not wear my fitbit... my heart rate monitor gives me total calories burned for the total number of minutes worked out and I then record the workout as a custom cardio (even if I do both cardio and weights)... and I enter the minutes and calories from my heart rate monitor.

Then.... after I take my morning shower (I work out early in the morning before work)...I put my fitbit on with the goal of increasing my activity throughout the day....

Then at the end of the day I sync my fitbit. It actually adds the "extra activity" and I can then see my self recorded workout from the morning and the fitbit synced activity.

Since I don't record any food or exercise on the fitbit... it seems to work for me... I have seen that the food posted to spark people does sync over to fitbit - which is really cool and the fitbit activity syncs over to spark people. I reallly like this!!!

It is not enough to simply show up. You need to step up for results.... keep on stepping! Dee

I have the same issue- doubling up or not recognizing changes in portions - I'm caulking this up to a limitation in the sync function that each side sends over "new" data, not being able to recognize something had changed. Also, fitbit's downloads from SP don't allow changes- must delete and renter rather if you input something directly and wanted to edit (that it can do). I'm just getting used to fixing it.

The thing that truly bothers me is that for some reason you can't scroll down the food list in fitbit. It stays hung up. I just added a bookmark to the website on my phone for those times.

Are you afraid to try or are you afraid to fail?

Bisco, re: New to Fitbit Zip... and there is no zip there... I'm not impressed.. have been at my computer well over an hour..(probably 2) and it has not updated yet. I'm not sure what else to do ....
Very time consuming to just see data for 3 days... anybody else had this trouble? Plus last week when I first got it .. had questions - posted them in the community help and support... no answer"

I don't have a zip, I had an older now discontinued fitbit and now have the ultra.... I had a little problem setting up my Ultra at first. Did you get to the point where it prompted you to enter a number that appeared on your fitbit device? With my second fitbit I went through set up but didn't get to that (and I forgot that was a key part of it). So my new fitbit seemed to work but didn't update to the website because it actually wasn't linked. This is silly, but it turned out I just needed to restart my computer, then go through set up again and that time it led me through all the steps and it worked fine ever since. I still occasionally have a problem synching, but if I shutdown and restart my computer it fixes it. (I have a Mac, I think my operating system is a little "wary" of my fitbit base station. I know the zip doesn't have a base station, but it could be something similar with the doongle.)

This thread is very helpful ... not that I'm having issues. I was curious about tracking my fitness minutes when FB is already taking care of it. Now I know I can create a "ghost" log to track separately, especially when I involved in a challenge.

no I haven't....... when I got mine last Monday I "thought" I had mine set up following that little slip of paper instruction.... but I didn't actually..... I went to the fitbit website and downloaded the actual manual (which I didn't see anything that TOLD me there was a detailed manual another sp friend told me ).... and after looking at it I realized I DIDN'T have it set up at all I hadn't had to enter that code thing for the sync .... so I did what that told me and then it worked ok.... my only issues I've had is 2 days now since last Monday my Zip has shown MORE steps than it syncs with the website and sp...... like yesterday my Zip said I had just over 7000 steps.... but when it sync'd to the website and sp it only recorded a little over 4,000 steps...... it did this one other time and I don't know why it didn't bring the full amount over..... but otherwise mine has worked just fine!

New to Fitbit Zip... and there is no zip there... I'm not impressed.. have been at my computer well over an hour..(probably 2) and it has not updated yet. I'm not sure what else to do ....
Very time consuming to just see data for 3 days... anybody else had this trouble? Plus last week when I first got it .. had questions - posted them in the community help and support... no answer

For some reason, not all the food that I input here gets transferred to Fitbit and I can't manually put into Fitbit as their food database stinks. Any ideas why not all the food is transferring???? Thanks

You don't talk about your daily calories. How many calories are you taking in on a daily basis? How many calories are you burning according to your FB?

Have had my ultra for a few days and I love it. I love seeing that I move much more than I think I do! I also like knowing how much more I have to do to get to 10000 steps or challenge myself to climb a flight of stairs. Its fun and motivating. Have had no issues with syncing with spark. I also love seeing my sleep patterns...super helpful.

Ive noticed the Fitbit seems to think I do more cardio than I actually do. I read another post to that effect. I lead a fairly active life so that probably accounts for it. According to what its tracking I should be losing weight and I am not. Frustrated. Can anyone give any advice? Do I need to set my cardio goals way higher to offset this? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose and make me think I need to work out less?

I have had trouble getting my ultra to sync with the website. I don't think it is a problem with the ultra. I think it is a website problem. The ultra will usually sync later on or the next day. I would not be quick to assume the problem is the fitbit itself.

I had an issue with my ZIP........ yesterday it showed on the ZIP and on my SP page that I walked 10533 steps which was probably accurate..... however, on my ipod touch that I synced with the ZIP and the fitbit website it says I only walked 9144 steps...... now no amount of pushing the refresh button for the website or ipod program, restarting my computer, plugging and unplugging the dongle made a difference...... it would not update the steps.....

why???? so I didn't get another 10,000 badge because the websit didn't update
