I live in Massachusetts. We have a farm just down the road that has been growing the most amazing greens this winter in an unheated greenhouse. They are tiny and spicy and so flavorful you want to eat them out of the bag in front of the tv the way we used to potato chips. Local eggs are starting become available. I also bought organic greens from the same farmer to set out in my garden. A couple days ago, the weather was so fine that we drove to the shore, walked on the beach and ate lobster. (well, ok the weather was in the high 50s or low 60s.....but it seemed really nice to us after a long winter. We even put the top down on the convertible......but we've been known to do that anytime it's above freezing.)

I just saw this thread. We order raw milk and yoghurt on a weekly basis from a small local dairy in N. Idaho - pick up is from a refrigerator by the door of a neighborhood friend. We've been doing this since last fall and love it.

Also we have our own herd of ducks and we have been eating their eggs the past two years. Delicious!

Another lovely Sunday at the DuPont Circle farmer's market here in DC. Kind of amazing that they have so much available at a winter market -- I am lucky to live within a short walk!

Starting Weight: 268 lbs. (November 2010)
Quasi-Maintenance: 165 lbs. (June 2011)
Goal Weight: 150 lbs. (reached December 8, 2011)

Size 22W to Size 4

Currently maintaining within 5 lbs. (+ or -) of goal. I weigh daily, but also use a tape measure and the fit of my clothes to guage how well I'm doing.

We don't have a lot of local production in our area this time of year but this weekend we are going to a food co-op. Unfortunately we don't have a local one but we are going to make a day of it and go to one not so local. Should be fun.

Went to the farmer's market this morning -- quite crowded now that winter hours have started (opens at 10am rather than 8:30), and because it was such a warm (for January) day here in DC. Although it makes it more of a pain to get around with our little cart, I am very pleased to see our local farmers and artisans get so much business.

We usually get about 90% of our food from the local farmer's markets -- a little less than that in the winter, since the vendor we get our milk from takes January-March off, so we get by on organic from the local bodega (or the local milk that Whole Foods carries, if we get a chance to go). Also, the Wednesday and Saturday markets are closed for the season, so we have to shop for the week on Sunday only -- but we are still lucky to have a market that's open year-round. I credit a lot of my maintenance success to having good quality food readily available.

I'm try to incorporate more ethical practices. We're finally in a position to start buying only organic, sustainable meat. I've been researching the best choices around Indianapolis. There's a possibility of getting local beef from a farm near Thornton, IN. They supplement their grass-fed beef with beer mash from the local brewery 7 min. from my home. So I can place an order and pick up when they're in town (they come in 2-3 times a week).

A local CSA group, Acme Farms and Kitchen, (Whatcom country, western Washington) 'sells; many local products, in addition to fruits and veggies. My recent order included eggs from a farm just over the hill, delicious Greek yogurt from the next county, cranberries from nearby farm transitions to organic, Organic Emmer (Faro) Wheat flour from just over the mountains in drier and warmer eastern WA, and locally made pasta from organic wheat. We are so fortunate!

A great Saturday OELC shopping spree today!

From my CSA box: frozen tomatoes (for soups and stews), mesclun greens, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and turnips.

From the farmer's market: peppered smoked bluefish (went right on those mesclun greens when I got home!), kohlrabi, onions, stew beef, black sea bass, flounder, and a london broil.

At this rate, the only thing I'll ever need to get at the supermarket is greek yogurt and soy milk emoticon

You all inspired me to make sure I worked a trip to the winter farmer's market into my Saturday schedule. I'm so glad you did!

First I picked up my winter share CSA box, which held:

mesclun greens
kale
butternut squash
white potatoes
onions
garlic
celeriac

Knowing I had those veggies as a base, I headed to the winter farmer's market where I bought:

fresh Atlantic cod (sustainably harvested)
fresh John Dory fish (ditto)
pastured eggs
bosc pears
purple kohlrabi
carrots
rutabaga

It's going to be a great week for eating fresh and local! Thank you all, for the inspiration!

I haven't been able to make it to any of the winter markets yet this year, but after reading your posts I certainly will this Saturday!

This week I found a new alternative food shop (this means our community actually has TWO of them now!). This new shop carries meats from a local farm that adheres to ethical, humane, and non-chemical practices. Usually, I have to drive out to the farm on the days their on-site store is open, but now I can run over to the alt food shop any day of the week. So happy! emoticon

So yesterday I picked up a london broil and some ground beef.

Last week at farmers market was wonderfull. One farmer was quiting for the winter he gave me tomatoes, strawberries, and parsley. Got carrots from my favorite farmer. and one farmer gave me $5 for helping him pack he would not take it back.

For Thanksgiving I got the mushroos that were left over and put them in my green been cassarole, yum!

this week carrots. Gave a fir bow that had cones on it that landed in my yard,to my favorite farmer. Thinking of giving her my spinach, radish and kale seeds for new crop,
