A deficit is a calorie differential. Your Basal Metabolic Rate BMR is the calories your body burn in a day. Basically it's calories in vs. calories out.
Calories Eaten - BMR - calories burned = deficit (hopefully). The reports page does all the math for you--see Daily Differential Report.
