I am teaching myself bass guitar, though I have very little time with school. We have a ton of instruments throughout the house. I taught myself the basics on piano and played trumpet for a year back in middle school, but I have forgotten almost everything.

Jules,

As a fellow jazz trumpet player, I wish you the best with both your health and your career.
I went to the University of Miami, a number (!) of years ago for my Masters in Jazz, and became addicted to arranging, which I actually do much more of than playing these days. Also play drums and keys.

Who do you like to listen to? I'm a Freddie Hubbard fanatic.

Hi everyone! I just got back on to the SP train.. I'm here to stay I think :)

I play trumpet, and have been playing for just over 8 years. Currently I am a jazz performance major in university, in my third year! I was classically trained as most of us are, but ventured over to the jazz side of things in my first year of university and now I can't get enough!

Hope to get to know you guys better soon!

Wow, I feel a bit overwhelmed when I see the posts from the pros.....

At work I swim with the sharks every day, but don't know if I could jam with the pros!

No criticisms here, it is really interesting to hear from everybody who has actually made a career of music.

Hi there - just imagine if we could all get together for a "jam session"! I just adore music - all sorts. No - make that MOST sorts. Started as a little kid on my Aunt's old piano, pinched my Mums Banjolele (cross between a banjo and a uke if you're wondering) and my sister and I would spend hours singing in the kitchen growing up. Leapt from there to the guitar, fell in love with Joni Mitchel and discovered open tunings - they still make my heart sing! When I lived in Sweden I learnt to play a Nickleharper - now there's an instrument!! It doesn't know whether it is a violin, an accordian or a dulcimer with its strings, bow and key hammers!!! I also used to have a zither but I seem to have lost that in my travels! I've been a rock chick, a folkie, a flower child, an actress, an artist (well, playing music while the paint dries - can you think of a better thing to do? Nup, neither can I!!!!!) and a Diversional Therapist - which meant I could incorporate my skills and inflict them on others! (Just kidding!) I still play professionally (piano, guitar and singing) but have dumped the bands and am working as a duo - called "Popera" playing and singing everything from Opera, Latin American, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Middle of the Road and comedy!!!!! We do a few impersonations too. That's fun!
Nice to be here with fellow musos and I am enjoying reading about you all. Oh, by the way, I live in New Zealand so I guess a jam would be out of the question. Bummer!!!!

Hello all, new here and just checking in. I actually started out years about 42 years ago as a singer in a grade school band. After playing at all the school and different dances in the area we broke up and I took up guitar (self taught) to accompany myself. Over all these years I was so lazy that I never learned how to read music, which would have been nice since I write all my own tunes. Years ago I put a couple songs on tape and was able to use a drummer from the ole Righteous Bros.band, Chester Thompson who played with Tower of Power/Santana and Bruce Conte who played with Tower. Also another drummer who had played with Boz Skaggs. With all my lack of education in this field, I know that music will be with me for the rest of my life, giving me something I can always turn to for joy. I have been playing an Ovation for years now, but over the years had a few different guitars.Good to be here thank, Joe

Welcome, I had a Yamaha classical guitar that I loved and for a long time that is all I would play, but then I discovered bluegrass. I did have an Ovation classical, too, but wound up selling both. There are times I really miss not having a classical guitar.

Classical guitar--nylon string, 2 inch wide neck that joins the body at the 12th fret, etc.

I am purely an amateur but have been playing off and on for more than 50 years (and "on" since May 2009).

I am currently managing carpal tunnel syndrome and don't play as much as I would like.

I have two full sized classics, a Yamaha GD-10 (had him since mid 1990's my go to guitar) and a Yamaha GC-31, purchased in November 2009 and still working in. And a silly instrument called a gitalele (google this one) that is a cross between a classic and a ukulele! Great for travelling.

My favorite music right now is Renaissance lute music written for the classical guitar.

And I would never make fun of a viola player! I think it was Barry Green who said that viola players are the compromisers of an orchestra.

Nice to be on this team emoticon

Welcome, and you won't get any viola jokes from me. The closest I came to a viola was a five string fiddle I had for a while with the fifth string being a "C". It was fun but I went back to the 4 string and sold it after the novelty wore off. Of course the tone was not the same because the body was still that of a violin and smaller.than that of a viola.

Love guitar and have been spending more time with it lately than my violin. Also, I have been spending more time with my mandolin as well. I started self taught with piano when I was 4 or 5, but never could do much with anything you had to blow to make a sound. However, a sax sounds like that would be fun to try and sounds great when played well.

I play acoustic guitar (an ovation most of the time), self taught, I suppose about 8 years now. It is so relaxing for me. Was a singer before that from childhood. Took up the guitar because I found myself physically unable to get out as much. Music is perhaps my fondest passion. emoticon

Great picture of you with your guitar. Your son is very talented. I have played guitar for about 45 years now. I play many styles, classical, folk, finger picking, blues, bluegrass, country, and even some rock. I like improvising around the penatonic scale and learning new riffs. Welcome to the team.

Hi all,

I have been playing the guitar for over 30 years. It is my peace and joy. I play a variety of styles and have been in various bands over the years, but lately I have been primarily focused on original finger style guitar for the past few years and have written quite a few pieces.

I have been playing open mics for almost a year and have gained some interest and a small following. I am trying to branch out into some paying gigs and having a great time.

Thanks

Bob

Hi Everyone,
I am new here and my name is Phyllis and I just joined this team. I play Celtic 36 string lever harp for 18 years, have played at many weddings and at renaissance faires. I sing a little. But not that good LOL. I mostly play Celtic, such as English, Irish, Scottish, Manx and Welsh music. Every song has a story with it. I end up telling the stories as I play them, but not at events, only at intimate gatherings.
I see a lot of different instruments that people play on this team and thats so great. I am happy to find this team too!

I currently am learning guitar. I own Yamaha FX325 Acoutic/Electric; Samick Acoustic; Ibanez AW 70 Acoustic/Electric; Harmony Stratocaster; Ibanez Talman Artcore TM-71. I am currently using a Roland Cube15 amp to practice with. I am also a vocalist. That is mainly why I got interested in guitar. To be able to play and sing at many of the songs that interests me. I am now teaching my nine year old son to play guitar. He now knows 4 chords.

I also play piano. In school, I also played clarinet.

My favorite genres are Classic Rock, Blues, Folk and Jazz

I started playing guitar at the age of nine.(1959) I studied Spanish Classical under a student of Andres Segovia. I went to the dark side and started playing folk, rock, and blues at 13. Yes, I've been playing guitar for 51 years.

I play three guitars today; a Takemine Acoustic Electric EG-334C, an Adamas Melissa Etheridge Acoustic Electric 12 String 1598MERB, and a special order 1989 Fender Stratocaster Plus out of Fender's Custom Shop. I put all of them through a crystal clear 1978 Fender Delux Reverb (Silver Face)Amp.

Hello Lillian, and the rest of the team...

I just joined the team yesterday. I play saxophone and piano. I was taught sax in elementary school (wow, 37 years ago!), and was self-taught piano for about 20 years. My music of choice: jazz.

I'm looking forward to participating with this team!

Hi, hello, I just joined SparkMusicians today so hello everyone. Well let's see, as far as my instruments go I play piano and I'm a vocalist. (Sometimes I put the two together, but not very often.)

I have a really old Currier and Co., upright which should have been replaced many times over, but it's what I learned on so I still love it. And I guess my voice is my own and I carry that around with me wherever I go.

I like to play some Art music and Contemporary. Same goes for singing. Right now I'm working on some Lou Reed, Kate Bush and Nick Cave.

I'm really happy to be here and excited to meet you all!

I used to own a black Takamine nylon string guitar that I could plug in as well. I loved it and it did have a mellow tone. I do both finger picking and bluegrass. I loved folk rock and still do. Recently I saw Carole King and James Taylor on PBS and have been remembering and playing some of those songs. Sure wish I had my nylon string back now.

I play on a black Takamine nylon string guitar, it's got a lovely mellow tone.

It sounds just as good plugged in , & also has a built in tuner~ though I still think the ear is the best judge.

I am mainly a fingerpicker, & I also sing when I'm performing~I play clubs & coffeehouses & festivals.

Oh, add cello to that list and I did use it on stage several times. I have played dobro, but not professionally and barely serviceable.
Obviously, strings are what I primarily play.

Rockstar, it is not the number of instruments so much as how well you play them and if you enjoy what you are doing. Good for you to be able to write songs and sing them with your guitar. I also sing and have written when I needed to, but nothing I would call spectacular. Maybe I will have some time later to test those waters.

Dan, you must be very talented. I admire people who can play both woodwinds and brass. As for me, it takes my breath away and I never got passed the weird unappealing sounds that I made when I tried to play them.

Well, now I will have to think about that but I know I don't play near as many as you do. Professionally I have played, guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin. I can play bass but try not to. I have played a dulcimer, piano (just enough to get by and probably not that much since it has been years since i have played), organ, ukelelee, and that is all I can come up with right now...so I guess 10 but only 4 professionally.

I will be playing Pa's fiddle at the Laura Ingalls Wilder house this weekend and doing a mixture of tunes with an empasis on Christmas.

Just trying to find period attire that fits as I outgrew all my Silver Dollar City outfits long ago.

I would like to know what instruments you play, how many different instruments, professional?

I've got about 600 instruments, I play flute and many of them. I currently play about 47 different flutes and have over 300. Also play many different drums, guitars, didgeridoos, I also play some exotic instruments from all over the planet. My genre is World and Ambient.

Peace
