I am sorry for your loss. My dad died in 1982 of lung cancer. It still seems like yesterday, and I think of him often. He was 58, and yes he was a lifelong smoker. My sister and I stayed with him in the hospital almost around the clock that last week. When we finally left to get a few hours sleep, our mother called to say he died 30 minutes after we left. We felt like we had failed him, but our mother believes that somehow he waited for us to leave so our last memory of him wouldn't be his death. Who knows what is possible, Vicki emoticon

I know how difficult this can be and I do feel your pain. I lost both parents to cancer (both were smokers) and although I was with my mother when she passed on 22 years ago, I wasn't with my dad when he died and that still bothers me even though it's been 16 years.

The one thing I learned to do is try to reflect on the positive things. Neither of my parents would want me to be unhappy or dwell on the negative so I try not to do that but mainly for my sake because I don't like getting depressed. We are naturally going to have some sadness when we lose someone we love but let's give thanks for the love we shared and reflect on the good things and make them proud of us.

Keeping you in thought and prayer as you continue to make good memories with others.

~Carol

When it gets close to major holidays I start to miss him. He had some form of leg cancer that spread all over his body that was killing him, and then he to a cancer drug that shut down his kidneys. I didn't get to say Good bye to him.
