Mine are still coming like clockwork, but I am on birth contol pill. They are lighter - much lighter and usually I get my hot flashes at the same time (or at least much more of them)...

I went for 3 1/2 months last summer and now its been 6 weeks and counting, no signs of the coming.....

I am hoping for it to stop and my body to regulate....I am an eternal optimist!

Believe and you can.

I had gone 91 days before having a TOM....and each time I go for months at a time like that, I think it's going to be my last. I think that I've finally crossed over into "menopause". But, nope! Not this time! 91 days. Maybe next time will be it.

Almost 3 years - in March. Feeling fine, just the weight gain has bugged me. My gyn put me on a tiny bit of Prozac for mood swings which seemed to be worse in later years and post-menopause. Works great - and my husband makes sure I get the scrip. filled every month - ho-ho-ho.

Does anyone have stats or info on how to lose mid-life weight gain. My practical gynocologist says it's not menopausal - it's just mid-life and I need to learn to eat differently.

Main Goals: Eat better and less of it. Move more.

Secondary Goal: Go from low 160s to anywhere in the 150s. 145 would be great.

Mid April 2010! I had a full hystectomy on April 29th. I went from having an awful TOM to none at all. It was really weird having my last one and knowing that it WAS my last one but I have to say that I dont miss it at all.

Hi all

So many comments in this I can identify with. I had my son at 36. Before my son my TOM was ALWAYS 6 weeks apart with no symptoms (started at age 17 yes I was late). Then about 2 years later they moved to every month. I'd never had that my whole life. What a pain. Well my doc said i was pre-menopausal at that point and watch how I feel about food/emotions/my body.

Fast forward almost 11 years. Last Feb I missed one. I can totally identify with the just long to think you're pregnant comment. At 46 I as like OMG no way. I missed one so eight weeks went by. The next 3 came 2 weeks apart. Then they went back to almost but not quite 28 days. Closer to 3 1/2 so they're shifting. Some months I live in the bathroom sort of.

As for emotions, for the last couple of years I could be pissed off for NO reason. As a busy mother and accountant I could think it was stress. Apparently this is a symptom - didn't know until I read this group. Gee.

Hot flashes I've had 2 that I can recall .. both in the dead of sleep waking me up and sweaty around the neck but not drenched.

Anyways I would LOVE a turn it off switch already. I sigh when I read the over 50's and think crap 5-6 more years to go really.

sorry this is so long but as I read it occurs to me that I totally don't feel alone when I read some of your comments here and that others might identify with my TOM experiences emoticon

I was wondering what a TOM was. Never heard it called that before. Does any one know why its called TOM? At 36 my periods started coming and going at will. I would have a month with 2 periods. Then one with none. It drove me crazy. Then I found out about these herbal pills called PMS Formula by Natural Factors. They were amazing. Regulated me So that I am getting TOM around 26 to 28 days made me as I say normal. I became so emotion I didn't even know who I was. I am 40 now and my periods are still coming on a fairly regular basis. But some times they are very light and end in 2 days and this TOM I am on day 4 and it hasn't stopped yet. That drives me crazy the unknown. Would you make up your mind how many days are you going to be and could you let me know ahead of time so I could mentally prepare. For me I am so emotional. I just don't feel normal. Some days I think I just want my periods to come to a complete end. I am done with all of this. But then I think what will life be like after this? Am I going to like what's coming?

That's the way I used to be, always on a 28 day schedule, then after I had the boys, and my tube tied, I went on a 26 day schedule...then up until last spring I was on a 25 day schedule, ...now its when it wants to be...April '10, Sept '10, Dec '10(35 days) and then Jan'11(again with 35 days) and of course since Sept. the boobs get really tender and thats the big indication that it's coming. At 54, I wish it would end.

I have a friend and she went through menopause at age 33...it's not that uncommon I just don't think many think about it.

And for me if I don't have like hot flashes I'm having a TOM but when I have a TOM I don't.

I really only have my sister to compare my own experience by. She's 3.5 years older than I am.....which means 54 right now. I'd asked her about hot flashes last time we had this discussion and she said she didn't have those much at all....which I'm thinking is about how I'd describe mine....they're sort of hot flashes, but not what I've heard hot flashes to really be. Sounds flakey, I know. I'll have to revisit this question w/ sis about TOM....Idk if she still has them. Funny, but growing up no one in my family ever really talked about these types of personal issues....we were too busy with other stuff going on in the family.

Wish I knew what my family history was regarding this. I only have my sisters to judge by. My mom, her sister, her mother, her mother's sisters all had early hysterectomies (late 30's). Guess I don't take after them..lol.

I'm so glad this question was asked because I've been wondering about this. My last period was April of 2010. I just got one again this month. So, that's 9 months! I had phantom periods all during that time. I just didn't know what to call them until I read about it here. I also had terrible hot flashes which stopped last month. I had a feeling when they stopped, that my period was coming. I felt normal again! I'm 48.

Before going 9 months without one, I would either have them about every other month or sometimes twice in the same month! I'm curious as to what will happen next. When I see so many women in their 50s saying that they still have their periods every month, it makes me wonder what's wrong with me. My sisters where both 52 when theirs stopped. I just feel like I'm too young to be going into menopause already.

I'm 44 and was 38 and perimenopausal when I got pregnant and had my youngest boy at 39 years of age. That seemed to help my symptoms until about a year ago. I seem to have a 26-28 day cycle then I will go for two months or more or skip altogether. I also feel like I have PMS for two weeks prior to starting. This month I think I may have had a phantom cycle as someone else mentioned. Had all the symptoms with no bleeding. I have had some trace spotting. So weird. emoticon

I'm 48, several months ago I missed a month then they came back every 21 days. The current one returned after only 18 days...heavy.

I'll try the calcium/magnesium supplement. Probably need a trip to the doctor to check iron level also. Feel wiped out.

Hi! I'm 49 and I'm "due" today, #26. They are starting to vary again. Back before "this stage" I was always 28-32 days. Then TOM started getting closer & closer. Landed at 24-26 days.
I've not missed any yet ( emoticon ) which means I still have a ways to go in this "process"!

For those of you with really heavy bleeding, I found for me, previously, that adding a calcium/magnesium supplement made a difference over 3-4 months.

Also I use a progesterin cream (natural, not prescription) that seems to keep TOM from getting in closer in days.

2 books I recommend:
The Silent Passage -by Gail Sheehy

The Cleveland Clinic Guide to Menopause (Cleveland Clinic Guides) by Holly Thacker

As always, take what you can use & discard the rest!

"Your mind will be like its habitual thoughts; for the soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts."
Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD)

"In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps." Proverbs 16:9

I just turned 51. For most of my life, my TOMs were light...then during my 40s they were alarmingly heavy. I worried about fibroids. Then, a couple years ago, they got light again. When I have one now, it's almost non-existant....that's how light they are. Just when I think I'm not going to have any anymore, I'll have one...but they are months apart.

I think it would be good to add your age if you don't mind so it gives us some frame of where we fit in to the picture.

I am 48 and I have been doing more spotting and the heavy burst and then spotting. It can last up to 2 weeks and then get a break then its back again in an other couple of weeks. Time to get my annual and see if I have cysts again or not.

Wow, reading your entries makes me feel fortunate in that due to fibroids and massive bleeding for years, I had a hyst (still have my ovaries) about 10 yrs ago. I can sympathize with all of you remembering the pain and heavy flow that I had for years.

Mine had disappeared for 6 months last year, then came back for a couple months. Sometimes I have what seems like a phantom TOM....feeling like it should be there, but it isn't.....the vengeance part could've been what I experienced for a few years into my 40's....but not anymore. To answer this question of when was the last one? It's been two and a half months now...

Mine disappeared for 2 months then came back with a vengeance! IF it plans on coming this month, I'm due any day now.. lol. I'm on day 24.. of what used to be a normal 27 day cycle..

Let's see if we can get a general idea of how often we are still having TOM?

Mine reappeared after a 5 week absense, now I'm at 1 week emoticon
