Hi team, I've been missing for awhile. I'm back. Things are pretty much the same here.I am still taking care of my mom at home, and running a home based child care program. It can be hard at times, but my day care employee is a huge help and does a lot for my mom too. Getting out of the house is the hard part for me. My son (20yrs old) and my brother help as much as they can but they both work outside of the house. My mom gets a little nervous if i am gone too long. Anyway, we are just plugging along, doing what we can to bring her a little cheer in her life. I wish every one a happy and healthy new year...and stay safe out there!

One of the churches in the area hosted ladies from several dementia units to a beautiful tea party. All year long they collect beautiful china cups and saucers. The room was decorated SO beautifully and they treat the women with dignity and love. They had a man and woman dressed in Dickensian-era costume who strolled through the room and did a couple of interpretive readings.

There was Christmas music and all the ladies enjoyed a high tea.

Best of all they invited a family member to join it so I got to experience this with her.

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January.

I know just what you mean, Kim. The holidays make it especially hard. While they have their little holiday presentations and festivities, I just want to bust out sobbing while I think how incomprehensible it is that my beloved mom has been reduced to this state! So sad!

Hang in there!

Julie:

We also got mom clothing. LOL since she broke her hip last year she's packed on the pounds. The time in rehab necessitated her to be in Poise underwear which are also a bit bulkier. I'm glad you reminded me because the order just came in yesterday and I want to wash the clothes.

Mom's favorite is Reece's Peanut Butter Cups, so I'm glad you mentioned chocolate.

It's so sad to watch our loved-ones go through this. Although I know she's been well taken care of and well loved, it STILL breaks my heart every time I leave.

Thanks,
Kim

Great idea, KSROMAN! My mom loves music, too. Although even though her ability to communicate recently is almost non-existent, she has made it clear to some of the aids that she doesn't want the CD player going. I think it makes her sad to hear "her" music when she is so debilitated. She was always out line-dancing, swing dancing, you-name-it dancing, so in a way I think it's a sad reminder for her. She DOES, however, LOVE the performances they schedule for entertainment events. Even though she can barely function, she manages to clap her hands and nod her head when they are playing!

This year for Christmas gifts, we are focusing on the logical (boring!, but she needs sweats and easy-to-change clothing). But we also know how much she loves her chocolate, so we will ply her with Mint Meltaways. For fun, we are taking some crayons and art books so she can color and draw. She used to be very artistic and we've even hung her own paintings in her room. Hoping she will enjoy the coloring and art items, but it remains to be seen. She has been very cranky and bad behavior-wise lately. Just wish there was a way to make her happier. :(

Any ideas for Christmas presents for our loved ones?

One of the assisted living staff thought of this and they've promised to help her get it going. Mom LOVES music but can't work her CD player anymore. She LOVES listening to Pandora on my iPhone when I'm there. I found my old iPod Shuffle (you can pick them up used very inexpensively on places like eBay) and loaded it up with Mom's faves.

Even though I have the original docking station, I found a small charger/speaker for it (44 cents plus $4.99 shipping on Amazon). My only "complaint" is that the cord is a USB cord that's only 5" long! I've got friends on the lookout for a female to male USB extension cord.

A few pair of over-the-ear headphones and I'm set. Of course everything is marked with her name ALL OVER THE PLACE.
