SP says that I should be eating 1300-1700 calories daily, but if I have a 2-3 hour practice, I can almost burn that much. At a minimum, I aim for the mid- high end of my calorie range for a normal practice day. I usually go over a little bit. As I often have trouble eating enough calories without throwing some junk food in there, if I'm going to have some treats (like a frappucino or something), it's going to be on a day that I skate.

I have trouble skating if I'm stuffed, so I tend to eat a large meal mid-day or early afternoon(lots of protein, some fat, and some carbs) and something smaller before I skate. I aim to be only slightly hungry after practice, rather than ravenous, as practices are generally late and I don't like to eat much late. I usually have fiber one bars or clif bars in my bag for after, so I'm not tempted to eat fast food or junk food on the way home.
I don't know if that's helpful at all. I'm just happy to view food more as fuel than an enemy of mine...

I'm fresh meat and was just wondering what your calorie range for the days you play derby is? Having trouble figuring out how much I should be eating on those days...

When I first started playing derby, I went from being a total couch potato to practicing 3x's a week. I lost about 20 pounds over the first year. I also gained muscle at the same time.

Are you working out aside from derby? If not, I'd highly suggest adding some strength training to your regime on non-practice days.

I've lost about 17 pounds this season by eating within my calorie range (usually the high end) and working out 6 days a week. Sometimes 7, occasionally 5 days if I'm really, really tired.

Once I added interval training with weights I saw a big improvement overall fitness and weight loss.

Hi Everybody,

Since breaking my tib/fib in December, I have been back to skating for about 2.5 months. I've rebuilt a lot of muscle in my thighs and elsewhere and I feel great.

When you started skating more often, did your weight stay stagnant? I have been burning ridiculous amounts of calories and staying within my calorie range every day, but I have only lost about 1 lb./month (frustrating!). I know that I have been building back my muscles, so I'm trying to be patient - I'll skate regardless - I just want to know when/if I'll actually lose some weight.

What has your experience been?
