Remember Survivor Ghost Island? It seems as though that twist is essentially returning, though it’ll be renamed the Island of the Idols—hence the season’s subtitle.

But the island won’t just contain immunity idols, hidden or otherwise. It’ll also have two human beings, who happen to be former Survivor winners, aka idols: Sandra Diaz-Twine, the only two-time winner in Survivor history, and “Boston Rob” Mariano.

When Inside Survivor’s Martin Holmes first reported on this twist, he noted that Sandra and Rob “are there to offer advice and guidance to the crop of new castaways,” not to actually play the game.

How will they be used, then? Survivor South Africa’s fifth season, Survivor South Africa: Champions, had two athletes captain the two tribes: they picked tribes and competed in challenges and went to Tribal Council, but they were not actual players. After the merge, they became part of the jury.

That doesn’t seem like what Rob and Sandra will be doing, though.

Martin Holmes later reported that they will be there to give advice:

“Throughout the season, players will be sent to the Island of the Idols via various methods, and while there they have a chance to gain advice and advantages from the pair of past champions. … Rob and Sandra are NOT active players within the game, meaning they are not eligible to win the prize money, and their involvement in the season will remain a secret to the cast, at least for a while.”

The good news is that there is no Edge of Extinction returning for season 39, so players voted out will be actually voted out.

But if this is a repeat of Ghost Island, can Survivor improve how it used that twist? Players sent to Ghost Island sometimes didn’t get to do anything at all. Only on a few occasions did those who visited have a chance to get an advantage or idol that’d come from an earlier season—and they did that by choosing to play a ridiculously easy and overly simple games of chance that it offered players who were sent there. Survivor Ghost Island’s final, beyond-stupid twist was to have Dom choose which voting urn would be used at the final Tribal Council.

Hopefully, the producers have learned from Ghost Island and will make the Island of the Idols more useful, and make Rob and Sandra’s presence mean something instead of just wasting time and taking focus away from allowing us to get to know the new players.

The good news is that the only returning players are Sandra and Rob.

The actual players—apparently 20 people—will be entirely new to Survivor, though some of them may be familiar to you.

Cast Members:
Aaron Meredith - Personal Trainer
Chelsea Walker – Video Producer
Dan Spilo – Celebrity Manager
Dean Kowalski – Account Executive
Elaine Stott – unknown
Elizabeth Beisel – Olympic Swimmer
Jack Nichting – Grad Student
Jamal Shipman – Assoc. Director of Admission
Janet Carbin – Lifeguard
Jason Linden – Attorney
Karishma Patel Sandesara – Attorney
Kellee Kim – MBA Student
Lauren-Ashley Beck – Journalist
Moly Byman – Teacher/Law Student
Noura Salman – Entrepreneur
Ronnie Bardah – Poker Player
Tom Laidlaw – Retired NHL Star
Tommy Sheehan – Teacher
Tra’Mese “Missy” Byrd – Military Veteran/Entreprenuer
Vince Moua – Admissions Counselor

During the finale, Jeff Probst introduced the new season, describing Rob and Sandra’s mentorship to the new players as “a Survivor boot camp.”

“We know everything there is to know about Survivor,” Boston Rob said in the preview.

Sandra said, “If they can take what Rob can teach them and what I can teach them, and put it all together, they can take home the million dollars. That’s it; all they’ve got to do is listen.”

From 'Barstool Sports' -----

Sandra (Pearl Islands, Heroes vs. Villains, Game Changers)

You can’t have a season of all-winners without the show’s only two-time winner. I’ve never been a huge Sandra fan because I was a big Russell supporter, but you can’t deny her place in Survivor history. She no longer has the title of being undefeated after her loss in Survivor: Game Changers though.

Parvati (Cook Islands, Micronesia, Heroes vs. Villains)

Arguably the greatest female player of all time. Nobody has ever played the flirt card better than her. Can’t have a legends season without Parvati. I know she was (maybe is still?) a CBS employee at one point so I don’t know how that factors in.

Kim (Worlds Apart)

While Parvati may be the greatest female player ever for her multiple appearances, I think Kim might’ve played the best game we’ve ever seen in a single season from a man or woman. It was pure domination from start to finish. Would love to see her play again.

Denise (Philippines)

Denise was kind of an under-the-radar winner. Her season was dominated by bigger characters like Malcolm and Abi-Maria. I think she’s someone that could do well in a season like this.

Sarah (Cagayan, Game Changers)

After a lackluster performance in Cagayan, Sarah played an unbelievable game in Game Changers. That season was kind of a mess and forgettable, but Sarah’s game deserves more credit, and she definitely deserves to play again.

Natalie (San Juan del Sur)

Despite her twin being vote out first in this Blood vs. Water season, Natalie lasted to the end and won on a strong social game. She’s another person who could fly under-the-radar in a season like this and have a strong showing.

Danni (Guatemala)

One of the quieter and more forgettable winners in the show’s history. Some consider her to be an underrated player. I’d like to see her get another chance.

Jenna (The Amazon, All-Stars)

Need an old-school throwback. At the time, she was one of the show’s biggest stars. She went on to become a Playboy model and also appear in other TV shows. She left All-Stars early due to her mom being sick, so she has unfinished business left. Would be interesting to see how her game progressed ~15 years later.

Tina (Australia, All-Stars, Blood vs. Water)

Another OG Survivor legend. She won Season 2, when Survivor contestants were basically celebrities. She’s been back a couple of other times, but I think it’s fitting to have the first ever female winner on an all-winners season.

Richard (Borneo, All-Stars)

The most important figure in Survivor history. He created alliances. He created strategy. He made the game what it is today. It doesn’t last for 40 seasons if he doesn’t set the foundation in Season 1. He returned for All-Stars but hasn’t been back since. He was almost cast again on multiple occasions but was denied permission because of his arrest over tax evasion. If he’s able to play this time, he needs to be back.

Boston Rob (Marquesas, All-Stars, Heroes vs. Villains, Redemption Island)

One of the most well-known contestants in the show’s history. This would be his fifth time playing the game. He finally got his crown on Redemption Island with a near perfect performance that felt like The Godfather. I was always Team Russell over Team Rob, but it’s impossible to have a legends season without Boston Rob and his Red Sox hat.

Tony (Cagayan, Game Changers)

Him and Russell are my two favorite contestants ever. Tony in Cagayan is the most entertaining game I’ve ever seen a winner play. He was a huge target in Game Changers and kind of screwed himself, but I still NEED to see him play again.

Yul (Cook Islands)

Yul quietly played one of the strongest winner games in Survivor history. Ozzy gets all the headlines from that season, but Yul was a silent assassin. All these years later, he still hasn’t returned. I hope that changes.

Todd (China)

Similar to Yul, Todd had a strong yet not flashy winning performance that sometimes gets overlooked. We haven’t seen him play again either. I’d love to see him get another chance and think he would fare well in this season.

Brian (Thailand)

Brian is one of the most truly despicable people to ever play the game. Some consider him the least likable winner ever, with some calling him a sociopath devoid of human emotions. He called the game a “business trip” and played an emotionless, cutthroat game. For all those reasons, I’m fascinated by him. Nobody in history has better embodied the “it’s just a game” mindset. I love that about him. Now, he might not be brought back because he is a legitimate scumbag and was arrested for shooting a dog with an arrow in 2006. I don’t think he’d be brought back, but in my dream scenario, I’d love to see what he’d bring to the island on a return trip.

Cochran (South Pacific, Caramoan)

Cochran gets some hate from the hardcore Survivor community, who think he’s just a favorite for the “casual” fans. Some of that hate is fair like when he gets forced into reunion shows and to console Debbie in Game Changers. But Cochran is still a major part of Survivor history. He’s the ultimate superfan nerd that actually won the game. He’d also be good for comic relief on a season that would be filled with a lot of serious players.

Jeremy (San Juan del Sur, Second Chance)

One of the most well-rounded players to ever play the game. Few have his mix of social, strategic, and physical game play. He played a strong, steady game in an otherwise chaotic Second Chance season. He’s a likable guy that nobody would complain about watching for another season.

J.T. (Tocantins, Heroes vs. Villains, Game Changers)

Part of me thinks we don’t need to see J.T. play again. His performance in Tocantins as the charming Southern boy is the best game he can ever play. He had two lackluster performances in his returns, especially when he famously gave up his idol to Russell in HvV. But he’s still a Survivor legend, and I’d be interested to see how/if his game has adjusted at all.

And there you have it! One mystery of how things may play out with the mentors! I wouldn't trust them either. Maybe that's the idea....see how people use their knowledge to help them or hurt them.

It is possible they have to agree NOT to use information they receive from others, but that would be so hard. I think a player should not give out a name ... maybe just information for "if this were happening, what....."

Maybe we will see as little of the mentor time as we did the EoE.

From GoldDerby:
....there has been fan speculation that there might be an extra idol hidden there. But it is expected to be a separate island like Extinction where contestants have a chance to seek advice from two of best “Survivor” winners ever —“Boston Rob” Mariano and Sandra Diaz-Twine. It is possible that players will get to choose between being advised by the masters of the game or getting an idol clue.

This will not be the first time “Survivor” provided coaching from a previous winner. “Survivor: Caramoan’s” John Cochran dropped in briefly on “Game Changers“ in 2017 during Debbie Wanner’s exile reward. The two-time player provided guidance and various advantages during his brief visit. Season 39 will likely provide a super-sized version of this type of mentoring.

I don't mind the theme, I'm willing to give it a chance, as long as Rob and Sandra don't take too much camera time away from the actual contestants....I still want to learn about who they are, and know who to root for!

What is *really* puzzling me, is HOW on earth would a contestant trust Rob or Sandra? Say I'm sent over to Island of the Idols or whatever. And then I find Rob and Sandra there, willing to give me advice and feedback. So I tell them who I'm aligned with, who I trust, who I don't trust, and maybe I tell them I have an immunity idol I found at camp. They give me advice based on this, and we're good to go.

Then what happens when "Kevin", maybe someone who isn't in my alliance, gets sent to Island of the Idols to meet up with Rob and Sandra. "Kevin" then tells Rob and Sandra his side of the game, and asks for advice on what to do. Sooo WHAT is keeping Sandra and Rob from just telling Kevin that I have an idol, and that he should vote me out? Or that I told them I don't trust Kevin? Or that I told them I *do* trust Kevin, so it would be easy to blindside me??

Basically, EoE had a major flaw in which the jury had major influence over the actual game....and I don't see how Rob and Sandra are going to be kept from having major influence over the game as well. I for one wouldn't trust Rob or Sandra ONE BIT to not tell someone else in the game, everything that I just told them.

I fear Sandra and Rob will influence the game so much that they will basically make their "favorite" player win.

I just don't see how Sandra and Rob are to be trusted. They will want to stir the pot, even if they are told to not interfere too much.

The former Survivor champions are the central components of the fall-debuting season's twist, in which 20 new castaways will slug it out for the million-dollar prize, all while accumulating opportunities to glean practical and strategic survival skills from Rob and Sandra. Think of it like Ghost Island, except instead of a bunch of cursed relics and haunted bamboo, players are dealing with two walking, talking, taunting Survivor legends.

Inside Survivor’s Martin Holmes has so far identified 11 of the 20 cast members, and they include:

emoticon Professional poker player and World Series of Poker winner Ronnie Bardah
emoticon “Air Force veteran, athlete, inventor, and self-identifying stoner” Tra’mese “Missy” Byrd
emoticon A Hollywood manager, Dan Spilo, who co-owns the talent agency Industry Entertainment Partners

Meet the Mentors

Robert Carlo "Rob" Mariano (commonly known as Boston Rob) is the Sole Survivor of Survivor: Redemption Island. He originally competed on Survivor: Marquesas, Survivor: All-Stars, and Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains. Rob will return as a mentor for Survivor: Island of the Idols.

The series' first four-time contestant, Rob is regarded as one of the smartest and most devious contestants in Survivor history, and is renowned for his charismatic leadership, challenge prowess, and cutthroat strategy.

Rob also competed alongside Amber on The Amazing Race and is often referenced as one of the historical touchstones of Survivor strategy, as evidenced by Phillip's deployment of "the Boston Rob rules" on Survivor: Caramoan.

While Rob has been considered one of the best players ever by host Jeff Probst and many fans, there are many who criticize him for taking four attempts to finally win and having an enormous and unfair advantage in Redemption Island for being a four-time player.

Sandra Diaz-Twine is the Sole Survivor of Survivor: Pearl Islands and Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, and the only two-time winner in Survivor (U.S.) history. She also competed on Survivor: Game Changers. Sandra would return as a mentor for Survivor: Island of the Idols.

In Pearl Islands, after controlling the Drake tribe along with allies Christa Hastie and Rupert Boneham, Sandra made it to the merge where her Drake Alliance was eventually overthrown. However, she was then able to maneuver herself through the game between alliances to eventually make it to the Final Tribal Council and win in a 6-1 vote.

Sandra later returned for Heroes vs. Villains as a member of the Villains tribe where her alliance was overthrown early on by Russell Hantz. Despite this, Sandra again proceeded to demonstrate her adaptability in the face of long odds and was able to manipulate and deceive the new majority alliance into blindsiding Coach Wade in order to save her closest ally, Courtney Yates. Sandra made it to the merge despite Courtney's eventual elimination, but was rebuffed in her efforts to work in concert with the Heroes Alliance. After finding a Hidden Immunity Idol and being viewed as no threat at all, Sandra again made it to the end. Through her previous social relationships and the Heroes' overall disdain for fellow finalists Russell and Parvati Shallow, Sandra won the title of Sole Survivor in a 6-3-0 vote and became the series' first two-time winner.

Her undefeated record caused Sandra to begin Game Changers with a huge target on her back. Even so, her charisma allowed her to emerge victorious from a power struggle on the original Mana tribe against another high-profile threat in previous winner Tony Vlachos. After a Tribe Switch that sent her to the Nuku tribe, she remained in power and successfully took out previous winner J.T. Thomas. However, a second Tribe Switch cost her control of the game, and she was hastily eliminated by the Tavua Alliance led by Andrea Boehlke and Zeke Smith. This marked the first time in 94 total days of Survivor competition that Sandra was voted out.

A master of low-profile, socially-savvy, self-preserving gameplay, she is widely considered one of the legends of the game. Due to her being the only two time winner, Sandra can be considered as the greatest Survivor player of all time.
