this post is from really long ago, but I'm going to try mindful breathing

The following is the original post for this thread. I think it is a good idea to do a short breathing exercise before a meal.
-----------------
Breathing in, I know that I am breathing in.

Breathing out, I know that I am breathing out.

Set aside 10 minutes today to monitor your breathing. Don't alter your breathing in any way, just breathe normally. Feel the air move into your lungs, think to yourself "I know that I am breathing in"

Feel the air move out, acknowledge it. "I know that I am breathing out"

This practice is a very basic but beautiful way to increase mindfulness.

Try to apply it to your hunger..practice thinking about your hunger before you decide to sate it. Allow mindfulness to stop you in your tracks on your way to your refrigerator. "I am hungry, are my decisions based on sating my hunger, or are they based on what's good and healthy for me?" "Am I hungry because I need food, or am I hungry because I am stressed?"

Consider setting up a Spark goal! 10 minutes of mindful breathing everyday.

Let everyone here know how it went for you.

For a few minutes of my mindful breathing, I am employing the Teresa Tapp breathing technique. She is a physical therapist and there is a SparkTeam that uses her recommendation: T Tapp SparkTeam. I got her Fit and Fabulous in 15 Minutes book--a used book bought online. I am still working on doing the Total Back Stretch.

I do breathing meditation everyday. If it's official mindfulness breathing technique, I don't know. Will check into it. emoticon

Just put in a request at my library to borrow the book...very interested in seeing how I can use mindful breathing, as what I have learned (and am still learning) in mindful eating has been so helpful for my emotional eating issues. Thank you for posting!!! ~Cathy

I feel pretty good today. I not only did the mindful breathing but did 20 minutes of sitting meditation and a full body scan meditation at night. It helps me to flow into visualizing myself eating less, and getting thinner and healthier. I just have to come here to be motivated to do some meditation every day, because I know from past experience how much it helps. Thanks again for starting the challenge Michael!

I do about 10 minutes of alternative nostril yoga breathing to let go of any tensions in my body and to move into a calm, peaceful state before I actually meditate. I was taught that breathing is the key. It also helps to calm the mind and to center,

Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity"

I am going to give this one a try. This sounds like a great way to monitor whether a person is really hungry or not.

Hi Gabby!

I'm glad that helps. It sounds like you might already be familiar with some of its principles, but
"Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life" by Thich Nhat Hanh is a beautiful book which can help you tie the mindfulness that you already practice to your eating behaviors.

if you ask me, it's required reading for anyone who wants to introspectively seek answers about their eating habits.

Amazon link is below. It's definitely an affordable book, but if that's an issue, most libraries have at least one copy.

I do practice mindful breathing every day because it's part of my meditation routine. It's the mindful eating I have trouble with so thanks for the tips.
