Marsha, it is almost certainly chafing and not uncommon when it is warm and very humid. The moisture softens the skin and makes it more prone to irritation, even from fairly innocuous contact.

I sometimes also have problems underneath seams in clothing -- especially arm holes but sometimes also side seams, not to mention waist bands. If your top clings to you, it can rub, especially over longer distances. I use this tape on my chest underneath the sports bra band fairly routinely.

Sounds like something I should check out, too. After my HM last Sunday I found marks on my back just a bit above the waist, but lower than I thought my sports bra ever went. I had 5 little marks on one side and three on the other in 2 parallel groups. It's a mystery! Must be chafing. I've never had chafing before.

My favorite protective product is "Gentle Paper Tape" (brand name Nexcare, made by 3M). It is light but strong, breathable, flexible tape with a non irritating surgical glue. I use it on blisters (or before blisters), on chafed spots (or to prevent chafing), etc. It is gentle enough to be used on already irritated skin. It stays in place very well.

I first discovered it years ago after a surgery when it was recommended to me by my surgeon to protect my incision.

Does anyone have experience with these products?

I want to protect my arch that was irritated by my orthotic where the covering had worn off. They’ve been recovered but until they are thoroughly broken in, I want some extra protection.

Short runs seem OK, but I don’t want a setback. 2 weeks until my HM.
