You should do great. So excited for you. I would love to do that race one day.. Good excuse to come back to Florida..

I ran yesterday. I was going to try for 12 miles, but the heat, humidity and Full Sunshine got to me and stopped at 10 miles. HM for week was to be 10 miles and MM was 12, so I am still happy with that. Hopefully next week I can make up for it. After mile 5, I had to do more walking and hydrating..

I am looking at the Space Coast Marathon - it has a 7 hour time limit - which is the amount of time I will need.

I will see - who knows if I can get past the 13 miles with my arches (well, and the rest of this body).

Sharon: Hurray for a training plan... LOL They definitely help!

Weather: Sounds like it is hot in a lot of places this time of year.

Dee: Did you get outside and run a little?

***

Supposed to do 1 mile intervals today.
Supposed to rain.

I will see what happens in an hour.... :)

Marathon Training: I actually am going to start a 20 week MT plan in a couple weeks. I do not know if my feet can handle the time and distance needed. I have not signed up for one yet (it is early December), but if I can make it the 20 mile distance - if I can even do the 17 one.... I will then sign up. I know how my feel feel after a HM distance.

I hope everyone had a nice 4th of July! Jean, we use to vacation at Mrytle Beach a lot before moving to FL way back when.. Even when growing up in NY.. Myrtle Beach and FL we are go to places.. Your pictures are beautiful..

Dee, I enjoyed seeing your pictures of your travels too.. Wishing you happy running. I know you will get back to it..

I enjoyed easy running for the month of June.. Now training starts. I just finished week 1/14 MM/HM Training for Fall Training.. I am signed up for Oct. and Nov. HM but may switch the Nov. one to a Full.. Not sure, we shall see how it goes. It has been a long time since running a Full and that was the Clearwater Gulf Beaches way back in 2001, 2002 and I think 2003. I think 2000 I ran a relay with a few friends..

It has been so hot here.. Keep cool.

Thursday I did go out for an easy run - that means maintaining a heart rate of about 75% of my max. (for me that is about 136).

When I walked in the door I checked and it was 81 degrees and 80% humidity.

Biked very easy yesterday and that seemed like harder work than running on Thursday.

Will run again tomorrow...

Yesterday went to see the new Spiderman movie. It was good and exciting once you got through the 1st 10-15 minutes of seemingly needless material.

It's more than summer here, it's hotter than Hades. Although we did have a few ferocious rainstorms to cool things off this weekend.

i will force myself to get out there this afternoon. Even if it's slow. Even if it's ridiculously hot and humid.

Hi everyone! Nice to see some posts.

DEE: What an awesome trip! You are such a world traveler!! Go outside and run - it is definitely summer in your world.

SHARON: 4 miles 3x a week sounds very doable - especially this time of year. I have been trying to run a longer 2 hours (very slowly) every other week.

Ate WAY too much on our trip to Myrtle Beach. But, the weather was beautiful, walked a great deal - morning - and then some sight-seeing - and then on the boardwalk to and from dinner most nights. No running at all - but plan to get outside tomorrow morning.

Dee, I know you will get back to running.. I bet being involved with the scheduling and routes for your running group will help..

Jean, are you still in Los Vegas?

Lynn, Are you still Running. How was your April 5 K?

Marsha, happy to see you are still running..

Hi Elizabeth!! Nice to meet you.

I am enjoying June as my recovery/ rest.. I ran two Half Marathons in the Spring and soon will start training for two Fall Races.. I have been running maybe 4 miles 3 x a week.. Next week it ramps up to 5 miles on Tuesday..

Good morning, all!
Back from an incredible trip to China and Tibet. I'm still struggling with jet lag 10 days later, but doing better.

Jean, your travels sound wonderful. My son and his family will be moving to Madrid soon; if I can only make myself retire, I could spend a month or so there trying to learn Spanish. Fortunately there are similarities with French, so it would be doable. Once I retire.....

That's the current mental battle. It would mean not having extra cash flow to help my two youngest. But then it's high time they take care of themselves. Sigh. Such a difficult decision.

Good Morning.....

LYNN: Have you ever been involved with the photography group called 52frames?

***

Another beautiful April morning....
I walked a short distance to a neighborhood pond - a little over a mile. Tried to take some decent photos..... none turned out....

I am going to investigate Farmer's Markets in my area. I would like to start buying fresh produce from a local grower.

We are heading to Las Vegas on Sunday. I remember when we scheduled this.... I said - do you think this is too soon after getting back from Europe. It was a free timeshare week - so no cost to us and Rick had supposedly free tickets..... which ended up costing quite a bit. Luckily, I like Las Vegas.

Got home late Wednesday. Wow, was I tired after the very long travel day.

We had a great time. I loved Paris and Germany. I would return to both - but probably not on a tour. When I was in Germany, I thought how interesting it would be to live in one of those little cities we visited on the Rhine for a month and take German classes, go to the market square every day and buy fresh vegetables.

Walked today for 4 miles... will run for the 1st time in 2 weeks on Sunday.

Jean, Good to see you are still here. Hope you enjoy your cruise a lot! I am still enjoying the run-walk-run. Lots of changes in my local Galloway group, but lots of good going on. I'm a lot slower than I was and working around some physical issues, but I'm still glad to be out there!! -Marsha

We are leaving Friday for a couple weeks. Viking river cruise in Europe. Unsure if I will be able to log on here while I am gone. I am taking Ipad, phone, but not my computer.

Plan on walking everyday..., but not running at all. A really long rest week....:)

Run-walk 60 minutes - Steady State at about 80% of max HR

I use running for the following fitness goals...
Cardiovascular fitness
Cardiovascular endurance
also running helps
Lower body mucular strength and endurance.

I would certainly like to be faster, but that is no longer my main goal...
Pace just ends up to be whatever it is at my target HR....

Seabreeze,
it sounds like you got a great workout in. I am very much an emotional eater as well, glad though that you are focused now and back on track. Its hard to get started but once you're "there" it does get easier.

Yesterday I did 14K on the TM, slow and easy. Today I will do nothing. Going to a baby shower this afternoon so will try not to indulge too much. It will be hard, I love those little sandwiches they have at showers! WILLPOWER

Good Morning....

This last year has been emotionally difficult for me and I regained some weight - as I tend to try to solve sadness and stress through eating...

I am focused once again.... and back on track with 'my' diet. "Today" I feel confident that this focus and commitment will continue. I would like to lose 20 pounds.

Yesterday, I did HIT for my run-walk.
Warm up walk only 3 min...
Run-walk EASY for 1/2 mile
then
Seven times - 3 minute runs at 90% of max with a walk recovery in between to about 70%
then
Run-walk EASY to finish a 60 minute work-out
then
Cool down - walk only till I get home

For the 3 minute runs - I tried run 80 seconds; walk 20 seconds; run 80 seconds. I need to walk less in order to keep my HR elevated.

Currently Reading:
Daughter of the Empire by Raymond Feist and Janny Wurts
and
The Book of Balance and Harmony - a Taoist classic translated by Thomas Cleary
(this book is often out of my ability to understand - but I do pick up tidbits on life here and there)

Hello Jean!
Thank you, it feels so great to be almost at my goal. I actually never expected to get below 140 so where I am feels so good.
I have used the Jeff Galloway plan many times, did a half-marathon using the run/walk method. Right now I am just mostly running (especially the slow easy ones) but will do the walk/run occasionally.
How did your run go?

I did intervals on Wednesday, and tomorrow am suppose to do an easy long run in Z2 for 90 mintues. I did this same run last Saturday.

I would love to run outside after work today but it is giving rain today. Suppose to only have a high of 6*C with heavy rain. Not such a nice day!

Crazy.... when I opened this thread it didn't show anyone had posted since I did... then when I posted - a bunch showed up.... LOL so here is another post from me.

ELIZABETH: I just noticed the notes you have added to the bottom of your post. Congratulations and losing so much weight and getting much more healthy. Almost to goal weight - hurray!! I also base ALL my runs on Heart Rate and Time. Each of my runs that I use for my maintenance plan have a target HR - and can range anywhere from 75% - 90% of my max HR. I, too, have a Garmin. I just adjust my run walk intervals so that I can meet my target average heart rate. Do you use Galloway's run walk program or are you following another type of program?

LYNN: Yes, Florida may be keeping daylight savings time permanently. That would be okay with me. How is your training going for your 5K? About a month away.

Heading outside in about 60 minutes for a nice run..(and walk).

My sister is in Florida with some friends for 3 weeks and I drove to where she is staying and spent the night with her and her friends. What a great group they are!

Summer is definitely approaching in Florida. Mornings are usually 65 - 70 degrees and mid afternoon is near mid 80s.

Today was an interval session on the treadmill. I actually had an awesome run. My average pace was much better than just last week, I am feeling quite happy! After getting off the TM I went outside and realized how nice it was and that I could have ran outside. Oh well. Maybe tomorrow.

Yes, I was sound asleep in dreamland when my alarm went off yesterday morning! 5am to my body and mind. lol But, I went to bed early last night and feel good today. lol Plus, the sun is out and I think its giving some warmer temps later in the week. I am hoping to get a run outside in on maybe Thursday. We'll see. We dont' have sidewalks here so I need to have the shoulder of the roads clear of snow and ice.

Awesome that you are training for a 5K. And...on my birthday as well!! haha emoticon For a great cause for sure. I agree, its hard to be motivated in the winter months when its cold and dreary. I do feel a difference....I feel Spring on its way. yay!

Today my training plan tells me to do an easy 30 minute run. Sounds good to me. I will do it on my treadmill.

Welcome, Elizabeth! I'm guessing you might have been more tired this AM trying to catch up on that lost hour of sleep! There's been A LOT of talk these days about dumping time changes. I am ALL for it! I don't care if it's standard time or daylight savings time as there are pros and cons to both....but stick with something and be done with it already. JEAN....your state is a handful that have passed laws to keep DLST, but it hasn't gone into effect. CA is also one of them...They are saying it has to be approved by the Feds, and they said they are in enough trouble with the Feds right now so didn't want to push it. LOL LOL LOL However, your Senator, Rubio, has just written and submitted a bill keeping the whole nation on DLST. So time will tell if that is the case. Much research shows the spring time change causes more accidents, heart attacks, loss in job hours from absences, etc., than any other tie of year.

Started training for an Apr. 13 5K. I volunteer for a boxing class for folks with Parkinson's and this race supports research for a cure and/or better treatments via the Michael J. Fox foundation. So many of the clients and the coach is going so thought I'd join in as well. I've done little to no exercise being so unmotivated with constant 20 degree weather with ice and snow! FINALLY....we are climbing back up as old man winter loses his grip! In fact, could be in the mid to upper 60s by Thursday! We'll be running around in our bikinis! LOL

Wow getting up today was hard! I am usually up at 6am when I am working so today seemed like 5am I guess. Had a pretty good weekend, my sister visited on Saturday night so it was nice to spend some time with her. There was wine involved. emoticon

I work part-time/casual in a dental office and Mondays is a day that I am always on the schedule to work. So it is typically my "rest" day, no exercise today. Yesterday I did a PiYo workout. Tomorrow the program I am following calls for an easy 30 min run.

Woke up this morning with a huge kink in my neck! Not sure what I did in the night but sure feeling it this morning!

Yesterday my I did my long run....which was an hour. This plan I am following uses time and heart rate instead of distance. I have a Garmin that tells me my heart rate so yesterday was a slow easy one. Today it calls for "crossfit" so I'll do something else I guess.

I think walking is great, I love to get outside for a brisk walk. I am hoping that the roads clear up here soon! I am looking so forward to spring.

Hi Elizabeth...... Glad to see a new runner here. Looking forward to hearing about your runs and other goals.

This team had A LOT of runners and "posters" at one time, but not so many recently. I still show up along with a couple other.

***

Today, I walked. Have decided to walk more on the days that I am not running.
I do not have any planned races for awhile - just my maintenance plan running schedule.

Trying to have a healthy lifestyle in many areas.

Hello! I am not new to sparkpeople but new to the team. I've been running for quite a few years but have decided to try and tackle a half-marathon. I have done 2 in the past, but not for quite some time.
Looking forward to being here!

Today I did not run, I instead did some yoga and core. Yesterday was intervals. I am working this afternoon so will run tomorrow insead.

Howdy!

Ran and walked this morning. About 50 degrees.
Steady state run - keeping my HR close to 80% of max.
Felt good.

Hair cut today (definitely needs it).

Morning!

Ran and walked yesterday...

I did HIT for running - higher intensity intervals. I ran 3 minutes trying to get my HR to 90% of its max and then let it drop to recovery and then ran 3 minutes again. I did this 7 times - so I could get to at least 20 total minutes of HIT.

I used - run 50 seconds, walk 15 seconds for the 3 min run time.
Next week I will try run 53 seconds walk 12 seconds maybe as my HR average was not close to 90% of max - although it seemed like a lot of work!

Eating:
My husband and I have been on a, primarily, plant based diet (80-90%) He is convinced this is the best for his varied health issues. A few days ago, I added more protein into my diet again - cottage cheese, low fat cheese, fish. It might be my imagination, but my body feels better with more protein. I do not know the "right" or "wrong" of eating animal meat and products... Just seems so overwhelming to this brain to figure out.

JEAN....Congratulations on that race. AWESOME performance. Especially considering coming back from an injury, age, time away from half marathons. You did GREAT and you should be very proud of yourself! You are an inspiration and I so want to get back to doing one. Jan 1st I walked and ran with my granddaughter's momma....There were many potholes where we ran and I think they are responsible for what I believe to be stress fractures in both my feet. I did not go to a doctor as our premiums and deductibles have gotten so high....I go and there's nothing they can do except tell me to wait before running. The pain is the exact same pain when a doc told me I did have a stress fracture, so I'm going on that. Six to eight weeks recovery. I just finished week six, so I'm doing occasional walks with just a very few light and short runs. I have had very MILD ashiness afterwards, so take a few days off of that. Concentrating on mostly swimming and the Rock Steady boxing workouts with occasional Has Fit videos. Hoping to build on that but don't want to rush the bone healing. Taking Vitamin D!

JEAN...I hear you about the weight thing. When I get discouraged from an injury, I start to let loose on my eating. I shouldn't, but I do! I'm in such a funk trying to lose it!!!! I'm up and down the same few pounds. I think I'm going to go back on South Beach just because after researching what I've been on, and how I currently feel, it seems to fit where I am at. Not that there's anything magical about it. Lower BAD carbs seems to work best for me and the foods and recipes you can eat work well with my desires. Just need a change in routine!

Here's to us and healthy living!

Just looked up some past race information..... I had not participated in a HM for 5 years. It hadn't seemed that long. This one was my slowest ever.... which is okay with me - just fun to compare. I first started having arch issues in 2012. You would think I would have figured out how to "fix" it by now.

Afternoon to all!

Race: Finished.... I was 19th in my age group out of 30 I saw posted at the time. So in the middle of the 65-69 pack..... Even though my name says 68 still, I am 69, so last year in this group.

I wrapped my arch a little differently today and it worked much better. Not any discomport to speak of during the race. Now, every time I stand up - it has stiffened up and must be worked out.

My husband wants to sign up again for next year. If we do we will be in the same age group 70-74 (last year in the group for him - before the 75-79 group).

WEIGHT:
Last year at this time of the year I has lost weight and was 5 pounds from my goal weight. But this year has been a stressful year and I gained 16 pounds. I have been back on track recently and should be down 2-3 pounds by tomorrow.

ENJOY the big football game tonight!!!!

JEAN.... BEST WISHES to you on your race. We want a race report from you...all the dirty details. :D I hope you have a wonderful time.

Still no running for my. I have about two weeks to go in the 6-8 week recover for my self diagnosed stress fracture. I actually did a little jogging at the Rock Steady Boxing where I volunteer. Part of the volunteering is actually working out with these Parkinson's patients, so I get an extra workout in. We do one min shuttle runs in a series of one min exercises. If you can't run, then just walk. For the first time, I was able to run and not feel much of anything. So hopefully, that is a good sign.

I've been back in the pool, however, consistently. Mind you....from the holidays to maybe Sept of last year, I was not doing much of anything and it was rapidly showing in how I moved. I reached a point where it was becoming a chore to walk! All the warning of a sedentary lifestyle were becoming a reality for me....and why the sudden severe laziness, I have no idea!!!!! A couple of injuries I was recovering from perhaps just discouraged me and I let it get to me. But duh....I always have swimming or at the very least, jogging in the pool or water aerobics. For a while I couldn't swim b/c of a shoulder impingement which still seems to bark at me now and then. Oh, getting old is not for the faint of heart!!!!

OK...Looking forward to that race report JEAN!

Mornin'

Home again.... Raining today.... Was a very cold week in Texas (for me). Did my last longer run there and I was COLD! Came home with a cold. LOL

**

Big race is a week from today. Last long race for me though - my body can handle the distance except for my right arch. It has given me difficulties for 5 years or so. I will be able to manage 10Ks every once in awhile though, but 13 miles is tough on that poor foot.

JEAN: Hope you have had or are still having a great time in TX. I saw that their temps were up and down. Ours is as well, but never as up as their's or your's, obviously. But a couple of days ago, we beat Alaska, Iceland, Antartica, and even Mars, as coldest spot!!!! Now that's just nuts. But as cold as that was, it'll be even colder next week!!!! A fracture in the polar vortex that happens from time to time, is releasing all that pent up frigid air! I find it amazing how, although many others get cold, the absolute most FREEZING temps lowers itself in a very thin band and SETTLES OVER CHICAGO AND JUST SITS THERE! B/C of the jet stream, it comes doing then as it moves up to the NE, it tames from southernly air. NOT FAIR!!!! LOL I want everyone else to suffer like me, apparently! Ha, ha...Sorry!

Still swimming and had t get over arm tiredness. I'd go to the boxing class to volunteer with the Parkinson's patients and I couldn't keep up b/c my arms were tired and sore. I didn't even do that much.....Just SO out of shape!!! But I persevered and kept doing it anyway. After yesterday's swim workout, I actually felt empowered!!!! So....hang in there if you are doing something new or getting back into it after a long period of time.

Starting week four on my road to healing this stress fracture. Half way (hopefully) there!

Rider.... WELCOME!!!! And thanks....Hubby's colonoscopy came out perfect. He has to go every five years due to his mom's history. She had a speck of colon cancer caught extremely early. Still....they feel he should have it every five with his history. His mom is now 95 years old!!!! She also had a speck of breast cancer!

Jean.... Impressed with your HM participation. You go girl. Who cares about the time? At our age, just showing up is quite the accomplishment.

Went back into the pool finally, as I'm held up with yet another foot injury. It's feeling pretty good right now so maybe I can slowly get back in it. I was fearing it might be a stress fracture, but hard to tell. It feels like it's completely gone after two weeks of now walking (for exercise...walking around the house, etc. with occasional pain twinges) or running. Wanted to swim again today but have a cut and color which is a drive for me...30 min., then a volunteer thing, the an early movie and dinner with some friends (ah...the retirement life and being able to do such things on a weekday!).

A couple inches of snow on the ground now....But big storm to hit this weekend! Could get half a foot or more followed by single digit temps! Why oh why do we live here? With that forecast, I"m giving my foot a longer rest and will just keep on swimming and do some strength training, possibly some indoor stationary cycling.

No problem, that's what the Training Questions and Logs forum was created for, although you can put it somewhere else if you'd prefer. The team resources are all community resources. The only thing that I, as team leader, can do that you can't is make a "sticky" topic, i.e. one that stays at the top of the forum.

Enjoy!

Hi all--new-ish member and I have a question. Does anyone mind if I make a new topic and put my running log in there? I've seen a few listed but wanted to make sure it was okay. I'm already putting my stuff under the "December Mileage" section but it should probably go elsewhere as I'd like to expand it. Thanks and Hello!

TENISWHIZ: I hope your husband did okay with his C-scope (I'm forever putting that little procedure off, lol.)

DEE....Aging stinks! Just was talking about this with another knitter in my knitting group. Both of us are in our 60s and we talked about how we really noticed our energy level dropping. It's an uphill battle, that is for sure.

JEAN....Where are you? I hope you are doing well and that all is well. I see there are terrible storms in FL today...and a tornado has spawned in Tampa/St. Pete! Stay safe!

Have ran walked twice within a week....record of late! Should go this AM but really need to finish baking cookies. Hubby goes in for a colonoscopy this afternoon. Joy of joys! Ha....

Lynn, sounds like you got in a nice outing with the dog. Mine's too old for three miles, but we occasionally do one mile runs. Mostly half mile walks.

I'm feeling so sluggish - I can get up, go to work, and that's about it. Getting out for a run has been beyond me for two weeks! I've got to fix this.

Cindy is doing well, and running with her husband. She looks great!

Good Morning.....

Ran Walked 3 miles with the pooch as it was 50 degrees here in Chicagoland...Sunny, no wind that had a bite in it...BEAUTIFUL. Remembered to wear my newer shoes. Last time I ran my legs were killing me. Sore calves, sore feet. I thought, "Boy, am I out of shape!!!" While that is true, didn't expect it to be that bad. Later realized I was wearing my OLD shoes! This time...NO PROBLEM! Ain't aging fun? Can't even remember to wear the right shoes!

Happy Trails!

Congratulations, Dee, on persevering through your marathon. How is Cindy doing? Haven't seen her for a while.

Jean... What's news with you?

Sharon....How is this snow affecting your running? I'm sure it'll be short-lived where you are!

Not much news here other than being quite busy with "sit down work" and NOT getting my running in. My legs are suffering from atrophy! Things should settle for a three week break for a while....just holiday crazy stuff in its' place. Upper 30s ahead should give me NO excuse for not getting out there.

Happy Trails!

Just spent close to two weeks in Philadelphia. Work first, then marathon, visit to see my 94 year old aunt, and culminating with a Korean spa visit with my daughter on Thanksgiving.
Had lunch with Cindy (Trillium) and her husband prior to the marathon, and saw them a couple of times on the course.

Not my finest hour: I wasn't properly trained and my IT band started complaining at mile 16. By mile 18 I was walking and finished the last 8 miles mostly just walking. Not pretty but it got done!

Where did we all go? Just got back from a nearly two week excursion between central IL, Arizona, and Central IL again. Nearly two weeks living out of a suitcase...exhausted! Skipped Crossfit this AM as we slept late. Don't want to be sick for Thanksgiving as we are having it here. 13 people, five of which will be spending a few nights here.

A 5K with some family members the morning OF Thanksgiving. Not our town's giant Turkey Trot with thousands of folks....This one is an alternative. A grassroots 5K from a local triathlete. Cost is a toy for donation...Families with littles, pups, walkers as well as runners...a. kid one mile run, etc....all at this local prairie preserve on their path. No official time, though one of them tells your time as you cross....Maybe 200-300 people only. We love it! Laid back and FUN...though always very COLD! They get sponsors who treat us to bagels, donuts, cookies, cider, coffee, fruit, water, etc..... It's a very well run and supplied grassroots run..... Have not trained for this at all....have not ran in several weeks! I need to get my act together!!! Overbook in volunteer jobs and it's not a good thing b/c I tend to let myself go! Should have learned from this three years ago! Trying to be a better time manager....

Have a GREAT Thanksgiving if I don't hear from yawl before then! Image is from our trip to Sedona, AZ....The red rocks are beautiful!

CATHERINE....Nice hearing from you... My bottom teeth were quite stubborn moving in. It was slow compared to the top teeth that were over crowded but went into place just WEEKS after having the braces placed. I got the braces off Oct. 17th and am now wearing Essix retainers (very much like Invisalign) 24/7 for now...then eventually, just at night. This Thursday I go back in for shaping (bonding and shaving) as my teeth, now straightened and together, are all uneven. Looking forward to that! It's been wonderful being able to eat and not have all kinds of food stuck in my brackets! I see how nice it would be for the Invisalign trays to be able to take out and eat! My total time in the braces was 7 1/2 months. The Six Month Smiles people predicted 8. My dentist thought 9, but after seeing how fast my uppers lined up, changed it to six. He was way off and the Smiles company was very close. Hope you are able to move to the next stage soon. As you say....Very worth it!

Running has gone down the tubes yet again! At least the Crossfit has continued and I'm seeing some good progress. I no longer DIE in the Workout of the Day. Yesterday, I got the speed jump roping down really good! Thought that would NEVER happen. And squats are not next to impossible. But pushups are still bad! Little by little.... Feels great to get stronger and thinking that when I get my act together and start running again, maybe less injuries to NO injuries with these stronger muscles.

Dee.... Yes... Crazy world we live in. So sad about the Pittsburg event!!!! Disgusting!!!

Jean.... Have you tried the beans yet in the Instant Pot?

Sharon....Nice to hear from you! You are quite dedicated and an inspiration!!!

Hi all! Nice to hear from you Catherine and Sharon. Hi Jean and Lynn.

12 days away from Detroit marathon and not at all ready. Never made it past 21 miles due to injuries and weather. We may not even make the time limit but that's OK - as long as we are allowed to finish. Of the four training, only two of us are actually doing it.

in spite of serious efforts for six weeks, no weight loss. I'm not going to stress over it. Life is too short.

I have not been on Spark too much this year but still faithful about recording my Food and Fitness.. And thanks Catherine for starting the monthly running goal thread.

Life has been busy for me. My son visited for a month!! Yay!! He is moving mid month to Colorado, close to Denver. So excited he is gradually moving closer.. He told me Fresno, CA was very expensive, especially utilities.. I signed my Mom up for Silver Sneaker so we try to go to Anytime Fitness at least twice a week. She starts PT at the end of month. Hopefully we can keep up with that and going to Fitness Center. Still Running 3 times a week. Next Race 13.1 is Saturday and then Raleigh City of Oaks in November.

I have heard a lot about this instant pot and hope to eventually try one out.. I hope you all have a Fabulous Week!!

Instant Pot - Most of the time it works great, but I have no clue as to time and type of release that should be used, so I also scour the internet for time/release. I have been thinking about cooking dried beans in the pot - as they would be much cheaper. We go through a lot of canned beans in this house - LOL.

Catherine: Very good to hear from you. What are you doing for exercise these days?

Invisaline: Amazing how that is working for both of you.... I would imagine you will both be glad when you are competely done.

Lynn and Dee: Hi!

**

My husband has been out of the state for a few days and I have been on a closet cleaning kick. Three bags for goodwill are sitting in the hallway. Dropping them off today. I would like to just have clothes I love to wear - feeling comfortable and good!

My daughter and family moved to Dallas area recently. Will visit in a few months....

Hi Everyone.

Lynn, I'm still in my Invisaline trays. My front two teeth have been stubborn and required a second round. I have five more trays. At the last visit, the dentist gave me a chew device to help push the trays down onto the front teeth. They are shorter that the adjacent teeth and that seems to be part of the problem. This technique seems to be working. Fingers crossed. I'm tired of wearing the trays all the time, but it has been worth it. My bite problems are gone and the teeth look so much better, even if not yet perfectly straight.

Jean, I use my Instant Pot for beans quite regularly, but like Lynn, I usually cook them for less time than the charts give. I had a lot of experience with cooking beans in my stove top pressure cooker before I got my Instant Pot. In that, I routinely used 5 minutes on the flame with a natural release, which of course added time. The Instant Pot cooks at a lower pressure than the stove top device, but even so, my experience made me sceptical of some of the timings I saw. I use a similar technique to the one I use on the stove top, i.e. a shorter cook time combined with a natural release. I like to err on the too short side, since it is so easy to cook a little longer if not quite done.

I love using my Instant Pot. If it got mushed, you would need less time then. Sometimes, I search several similar recipes and see what times folks use. Amazing the differences. I'll be using it tonight for zero point (Weight Watchers Freestyle program) chili. I love how what is cooked in there tastes like you had it on the slow cooker for 12 hours VS 20-30 min.

Ran Walked yesterday in 60 degree weather. That alone took two minutes off my time!

In my last weeks of braces. Hopefully will come off in 2-4 weeks. So ready. Will have a temporary retainer while getting teeth whitened at home with a kit that takes as much as 10 days....then return for filling, filing, to get everything even and will have my clear retainers (much like Invisalign) afterwards. We went with these as permanent retainers are more difficult to clean your teeth. For many, that's not a big obstacle, but my teeth are "textured", meaning...mainly on the backs of them (thankfully), they are ridged and even with aggressive brushing, easily develops plaque. So frustrating!

Catherine....If reading, how is your Invisalign treatment going? You may even be done by now.

P.S. JEAN: Funny about the speedy coffee working against your counter top exercise machine. Ha!!!!

Good Morning!

LYNN: I actually did some squats and counter push ups while my Keurig was making coffee. Luckily my Keurig is very fast - so my exercise routine did not last long. LOL

***

Not much going on....
Been making large pot of vegetable-bean soup for lunches lately. Used my instant pot on the last batch. - lol - it was vegetable "mush" but we ate it all anyway. Using the stove for this batch.

JEAN...Boy do we know that routine.... We changed cable/Internet companies about a year ago. Slower, not as modern as the other one, problems the first couple months or so we got it. They had to work out the bugs! Still...not nearly as nice as what we had, but it was $80 a month! That's over $1,000 a year in savings! So....we just remind ourselves when tempted to go back, "Is it worth a thousand bucks more to be more modern? NO!" Ha....

I feel like I have been eating "fairly" healthy, but weight remains the same.

Playing bridge this afternoon......

Changed internet providers two days ago and so far the new internet is the slowest - draggiest - problematic internet we have ever had....

DEE...Glad to hear you aren't going there. Our Chicago Cubbies are flying out today to D.C. for a one game makeup and the flying right back as they had one day off in between two home games. There was some concern but the timing should be perfect. Glad to see the power of that thing has dropped (at least as of last night). Either way, it's still a powerful storm. They said the only reason it went down was because it got bigger! And that is not good news as more folks then are affected....but at least the winds dropped by 30 mph than it was.

Have been consistent not for two weeks in running, so happy about that. But have had to stay on the slower side due to my quads being spent from Crossfit. So until I get used to that, not going to bump it up.

As for squats.... An idea..... While my coffee would be brewing, (and I use a Kurig....LOL), I would place my hands on the counter and do the "perfect squat"....weight on back heels and knees not going beyond your toes, straight back and look forward). I'd do ten of those and then ten counter push ups with elbows close to sides so as to work the triceps. I wasn't as consistent as I'd like to have been....but it was something. :D

Taking the pup to the dog park, then riding my bike to flush out these sore quads! :)

Good MOrning

Lynn: Sounds like a great coach.

Squats - I cannot recall the last time I did these. I need a coach that forces me out of my chair!!!

Dee: Sorry that your trip was cancelled. East coast is having a tough time. Oh, my nose bleeds also.

I guess I got run down a bit on vacation - as I did not sleep much for that week - worried too much. Ended up with cold sore and exhaustion. But even with that - did do a 4 hour hike that ended at a waterfall. Very beautiful.

Home since Early Sunday morning as we had a couple plane delays. Have not exercised a great deal this week.

My trip this weekend is now canceled. I still have memories of being stranded in DC for a week during Superstorm Sandy.

I'm supposed to do squats and donkey kicks - to strengthen my quads, which should help my IT band issues. Hope I'm doing them right.

And I'm reading "how not to die", Jean. So far it's what I expected, but it makes me sad to get confirmation that I should cut back on animal protein (especially bacon!)

Sounds fun, JEAN....Enjoy your trip while there! DEE...Your upcoming trip also sounds fun...and productive. Best wishes on the race.

The boxing class with the Parkinson's patients has been going very well. What an awesome group of people!!! Really enjoy working with them. Took my first Crossfit class....Yowzers....I'm so out of shape. The then Green Beret guy (former...but they consider themselves always in the present, of course) is an excellent coach. Very conscience of your form and modifies the workout for me, as someone starting all over in strength training. Forgot how much he loves squats! Has always said most important exercise for women! I've since read that very thing. Have to learn to like them. He makes sure you do it in a way that takes 100% pressure off your knees! If you do it right, even someone with knee issues can do it. He's right there by your side walking you through it the whole way and having you do less work until you perfect the form. It's good to be back with him, even though it's tough (even when modified..LOL).

I ran after that workout! In the rain! We have remnants of Gordon coming through, but the worst of it is just to our south. Still....it's an all day rain for four days straight! Won't stop until Monday sometime!!! So....when it's not coming down hard, I'm going to have to be out there. I'm running my own "hashtag" nomoreexcuses campaign.

Sounds very painful, Jean.
Clever way to deal with dryness. The minute I'm out of a humid climate I start to get nose bleeds.

Next trip for me is in 8 days - going to DC for the Navy Half Marathon. And I hope to see some family at the same time, but probably won't have time for my granddaughter in College Park. She's just getting acclimated so I'll wait until my next visit in October.

Hi you two!

We are still in Winter Park.....
Very dry. We have the timeshare's crockpot full of water and on high and a pan of water boiling on the stove. It helps!!! We did hike yesterday for about 3 hours. Good to be in nature.

Will probably find another trail or two this week.... Beautiful area.

Hope all is well in your worlds!!

My son started having hemophlygic migraines early this year- both sound (voices, noise of any kind) and light (exp sun) triggers the migraines. If he is having a bad day he just does not go out at all or see anyone.

Jean, sounds like an interesting book. I love the title. Colorado temps sound lovely!
Lynne, sounds like a worthy cause. Yes, one of my fears is that once I finally retire, something may go wrong health-wise and I won't get the retirement I've worked for. Sounds selfish but oh well.....

We had a rainy Labor Day weekend, but no hurricanes so I'm thankful.

Good Morning.... Hot, humid, thunderstorms...What else is new! Will be high of only 69 by Friday...so relief on the way.

JEAN: I don't recall knowing what was causing your son's pain either (see Dee's post). I'm sorry to hear how awful that is. I have known and still know of one person in my life who suffers from terrible pain....Oh, and another (also living in CO) with a lot of emotional pain. The latter was a police officer who had seen some really terrible, terrible things and is suffering from post traumatic syndrome. To the point, he left his career, but is unable to do anything else. He's been in therapy but can't seem to shake it! He's married with kids... His mother, who I know here in IL, is so distraught over it... She visits them and I see her photos of her DIL and grandkids....but her son is never with them. So whether physical or psychological, I feel for you knowing how distraught she is! I hope you get to see him before you go....

Starting a new volunteer thing... A trainer I used to go to for strength training asked if I'd like to volunteer for his boxing program for patients with Parkinson's. I said I tend to over commit, but like a worthy cause....and having a friend with Parkinson's (he now lives by you, Jean, in Sarasota), I'd like to try. So starting with one day a week...might go to two.... Parkinson's patients have serious problems with right and left movements and balance overall. Boxing has proved to delay the progression of the disease. I observed last Friday. They are beautiful folks and a tight knit group, but very welcoming. He just wants volunteers there to encourage them and sometimes, they need someone to coach them on the right left thing...as they will stop, unable to put one foot or arm over the other. Once they get back going, they are off.... So sad to see! One who is more severe, I was told he was the CFO of a major corporation. This is how he's spending his retirement! What a nasty, nasty disease!

My husband is reading "How Not to Die"

We have adjusted many things since he has started reading this book. He thought he was eating healthy but has adapted again. The author does not promote any kind of meat or animal products at all... and stresses plant diet..... [whole grains, fruit, vegetables]. He also talks a lot about spices etc..... We still eat meat, but not as much.

Felt like 38 degrees this morning in Winter Park CO....
Will head outside for a walk sometime today. Still in the altitude adjustment mode.

Thanks for the pep talk, Lynne. it's much appreciated.

I decided to go back to a more plant-based protein diet because stressing eating animal protein doesn't seem to be working for me. While there's no weight loss as yet (hey, we're talking day 5 only), my gut is feeling less bloated. I'm not eliminating meat by any means, just limiting it more.
I'm also testing out various veggies as I suspect cabbage and tomatoes do not agree with me. We will see.

As for running, while training continues, I developed IT band pain at mile 16 of 23 last Saturday, so quit at mile 20 in order not to aggravate it further. Tomorrow is only 5 miles, so I will resume training and see what happens.

Jean, what is causing your son's pain? (That's what happens when you are AWOL, you don't know things....) I know you will enjoy your visit and the cooler weather.

LYNN: I hear you.... my ST needs to be improved also.

Hi Dee!

***

Traveling coming up again. We are heading to Denver on Saturday for a week. I do hope my son is well enough to see us, but I am not holding onto hope. He is in nearly constant pain and just does not see anyone. Maybe he will feel well enough one of the days. I do not want to make him worse though by visiting. Such a crappy life he has right now.

Will also try to do some hiking rather than sit around and be sad and worry all the time.
I will try to log on sometimes next week.

JEAN... I know what you mean. We spent a week babysitting our 6 year old granddaughter since her summer camp ended and she had a full week before school. We took her to St. Louis for two days, went to a water park another day, did a photo shoot with her another day, went to the state fair another, etc., etc. We came home POOPED!

Ran Walked yesterday with the pup even though the temps were rising quickly. It was quite windy but also cloudy, so not too bad. SLOW....but we got it done. Still need to get more disciplined with the strength training!

Enjoy life each day!

Good Morning.....

Was very tired after long visit. My daughter and her family flew in... then 3 days later flew to Dallas - as my son-in-law accepted a position there and they needed to find somewhere to live. My granddaughter stayed with my husband and me while we were on Sanibel Island. So busy keeping a 4 year old entertained for 4 days.....

LYNN: I, too, need to stop thinking.....and do something.....
